Biblical Name Found on Pottery

first_imgThe Times of Israel calls it a “once in a lifetime” discovery. See also Israel National News.  Live Science’s article ends:“Until about five years ago we knew of no inscriptions dating to the tenth century BCE from the Kingdom of Judah. In recent years four inscriptions have been published: two from Khirbet Qeiyafa, one from Jerusalem and one from Bet Shemesh,” Garfinkel and Ganor said in the IAA statement. “This completely changes our understanding of the distribution of writing in the Kingdom of Judah, and it is now clear that writing was far more widespread than previously thought.“Other Biblical Archaeology NewsIn the City of David outside the current southern wall in Jerusalem, Eilat Mazar has continued excavating. The Israel Video Network posted a video by CBN where Mazar describes the find of large walls with Phoenician decor, carved ivory ornaments and royal seals she believes point to Solomon’s reign. To the north, excavators at Khirbet al-Maqatir uncovered another cistern. The site is believed to be the Biblical fort of Ai defeated by Joshua. A video by Scott Stripling shows the discovery. The current issue of Creation Magazine clears up confusion about the identity and role of King Belshazzar spoken of in the Book of Daniel.Bible Places Blog is a good place to keep up on the latest discoveries in Biblical archaeology. Another news site is Bible History Daily. Facebook users can also engage in the conversation by joining the Bible Archaeology group. The Bible always wins out in the end, doesn’t it? Over a century ago, Robert Anderson wrote a book called Daniel in the Critics’ Den. Even now, the Lord has ways of shutting the mouths of lions and critics. An iron-age pot at a fortress south of Jerusalem is inscribed with the name of King Saul’s successor at the time of David.Khirbet Qeiyafa is becoming more of an archaeological hotspot as findings from the excavations are being published. It’s becoming clear this was an important outpost at the time of King Saul, King David and King Solomon, supporting the descriptions in the Old Testament that the first monarchs of Judah and Israel were indeed capable of administering a far-flung kingdom. Not many years ago, Bible skeptics denied that these kings were more than local tribal chieftans (4/24/12).Now, for the first time, the name Esh-baal (Biblical Ish-bosheth), the same name as that of King Saul’s son and rival of King David, has been found in an inscription on a pottery jug. The story was announced by the Biblical Archaeology Society which says,The Biblical name Eshbaal has been found for the first time in an ancient inscription. Incised before firing on a 3,000-year-old pithos (large ceramic storage jar), the inscription was discovered at the site of Khirbet Qeiyafa in Israel. Researchers Yosef Garfinkel, Mitka R. Golub, Haggai Misgav and Saar Ganor have published their study of this inscription in a forthcoming issue of the journal Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research (BASOR).The Eshbaal inscription reads “[ ] | ʾšbʿl | ˹bn˺ | bdʿ” (“ʾIšbaʿal son of Bedaʿ”) and was written from right to left in the Canaanite alphabetic script. The name ʾšbʿl, commonly translated as ʾIšbaʿal (or Esh-Baʿal—“man of Baʿal”), is known from the Bible. Eshbaal was the second king of Israel, King Saul’s son and a rival of King David (1 Chronicles 8:33; in 2 Samuel 2–4, this king is called Ish-Bosheth). The name Bedaʿ, however, is unique. It is not clear, therefore, whether the name refers to Saul’s son or some other man with the same name. However, this name dates from the period of David, because shortly after the -baal ending fell out of favor. The author of II Samuel may have emended the earlier names with -bosheth (shame) to avoid honoring the Canaanite fertility god, although “baal” sometimes just means “lord” and was used in honor of the God of Israel sometimes. Thus, Ishbaal (or Eshbaal) is rendered Ishbosheth in II Samuel, and Jonathan’s son Merib-baal became Mephibosheth (see Luke Chandler blog). The original name Ish-baal is retained in I Chronicles.Inscriptions from this period are very rare. An ostracon found at the site in 2008 was a sensation—the earliest Iron Age inscription ever found in Israel (1/07/10).This new inscription marks a transitional stage between the writing system used for 800 years and the official, standardized Phoenician script used by kingdoms and states in Canaan by at least the 10th century B.C.E.Radiocarbon shows the jug dating from approx. 1020-980 BC.  King David reigned from about 1010-970 BC. The fact that the text was written in clay in large, clear letters before firing indicates it was the work of a trained scribe. This is another clue to the administrative reach of the early Judean monarchy. Khirbet Qeiyafa is adjacent to the Elah Valley where David killed Goliath. Prince Charles Speaks At Princes Trust Leadership Dinner

first_imgMore than five hundred business leaders raised over £400,000 at a special fundraising dinner for The Prince’s Trust last week. The Prince of Wales makes a speech at the Prince’s Trust Youth Leadership receptionCredit/Copyright: www.princeofwales.gov.uk/Founder and president, HRH The Prince of Wales, spoke about the impact of unemployment on young people’s mental health at the The Prince’s Trust and EMC Leadership Dinner.Hosted by newsreader Sophie Raworth and featuring a speech by Baroness Joanna Shields OBE – Advisor on the Digital Economy, Chairman of Tech City UK and Director of the London Stock Exchange Group – the event united business leaders to raise over £400,000 for The Trust. The evening also saw the unveiling of a multi-channel ad campaign, with the first Prince’s Trust TV advert in nearly a decade. The campaign – #TogetherWeCan – aims to increase support and donations to help vulnerable young people, many of whom are facing issues such as mental health problems, homelessness and abuse, move into employment, education or training.Speaking about the research produced by the Trust, The Prince said: “My Trust’s Youth Index, published earlier this month, found that it is often a lack of support at home which has a detrimental effect, and that a quarter of the young people in the UK don’t have anyone to talk to about their problems while growing up, and one in 10 have been physically attacked at home during their childhood.”The report, based on interviews with 2,265 16 to 25-year-olds, also revealed that while 20% of young people admitted to “falling apart” emotionally on a regular basis, this increased to a third among unemployed young people. His Royal Highness told more than 600 business leaders that research produced by his organisation had found that almost half of the unemployed young people it questioned felt depressed “always” or “often”.“For young people who are unemployed, the situation is increasingly dire, with 53% of them feeling anxious about everyday situations and a heart-breaking 47% feeling depressed ‘always’ or ‘often’.“As we all know, unemployment eats away at the confidence of those it affects, and I urge you not to forget about those young people who we haven’t reached yet, who are out there right now with no hope for the future.“They still need our help – and one very important way of doing so is through skills training. With so many gaps in skills … to be filled, the level of youth unemployment could be greatly reduced – with some joined-up thinking.”Hosted by BBC Broadcaster and Prince’s Trust Ambassador Sophie Raworth, the event featured Chantelle, a young ambassador for the Trust, telling her inspiring story of how she overcame the traumatic experience of being a young carer and unemployed to work in customer services with a leading bank.Guest speaker Baroness Shields said of the event: “The working world has experienced a seismic shift in how it uses technology, The Prince’s Trust is helping to put disadvantaged young people at the front of the queue for those jobs. I couldn’t be more proud to lend my support to this event.”last_img read more

Opinion Braxton Miller could feature prominently in Ohio States season opener

Then-junior quarterback Braxton Miller (5) looks for an open receiver during the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl against Clemson Jan. 3 at Sun Life Stadium. OSU lost, 40-35.Credit: Lantern file photoSkepticism and doubt surrounded Braxton Miller when he announced in late July via an interview with Sports Illustrated that he’d be transitioning from his original position of quarterback to H-back this upcoming season. On a roster brimming with talent, especially on offense, many wondered just how much of the field the redshirt senior would see in what will be his final season at Ohio State. On top of taking on the challenges of learning a whole new position, Miller would have to leapfrog a multitude of skilled players.Regardless of his incredible playmaking ability, it looked like it’d be an uphill climb for the two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. That is, until OSU coach Urban Meyer announced that redshirt sophomore Jalin Marshall and junior Dontre Wilson, as well as wide receiver Corey Smith, would be suspended for the Buckeyes’ season opener at Virginia Tech. Junior star defensive end Joey Bosa was also amongst those suspended.Outside of Bosa, all were projected to be key components in OSU’s spread offense. Marshall and Wilson are hybrid type players, and each play the role of H-back. Smith, entering his redshirt senior season, enjoyed a great spring and had firmly cemented his status as the No. 2 wideout in rotation. So, through unfortunate circumstances, a rare opportunity has been presented to Miller. With the highly anticipated “revenge game” fast approaching, he’s in line to receive significant minutes. Thus far, his move to H-back has gone pretty seamlessly and has fans eager to see what he’ll bring to the table. Miller is still capable of breaking any game wide open as his athletic ability has been all too apparent in practices, something senior linebacker Joshua Perry has become pretty familiar with.“Don’t blink, he’s got some of the crispest, most ridiculous moves,” Perry said at the Big Ten Media Days in Chicago on July 30. “His footwork is amazing, he’s really fluid, and his speed is obvious.”Meyer, a former wide receiver coach, remains skeptical and is Miller’s biggest critic, going so far as to say that it’d be “uncommon” to throw the ex-quarterback straight into the fire so early in the season. Admittedly so, the three-time national champion coach can’t deny the kind of difference-maker that sits ready in his stable.“He’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached,” Meyer said on July 30. “He’s got an incredible first step. Above all else, you say it’s time to win or lose, and he’s not going to lose.”The expectation is that Miller will be a true “impact player” on offense. Considering the suspensions that have been handed out, plan on seeing a fairly heavy dosage of him in the Buckeyes’ Sept. 7 showdown in Blacksburg, Va.Only versatile sophomore, and current backup running back, Curtis Samuel stands in Miller’s way at H-back. Time will tell, though, as to who exactly will get the majority of the work at the hybrid position. How Miller comes along in terms of the continued development of his route running is something worth keeping a close eye on. At any rate, Meyer will undoubtedly find it tough to make a case for not adequately providing OSU’s in-state product with substantial playing time come Week One. read more

Hughton admits Brightons signings havent played well yet

first_imgFor the Brighton and Hove Albion manager, only one of the ten players the team bought during the summer transfer window has worked well: Alireza JahanbakhshDuring the summer transfer window, Brighton and Hove Albion spend almost £60m on 10 new players. And manager Chris Hughton admits the new signings have yet to make an impact in the English Premier League.“I think it would be fair to say they haven’t hit the levels required yet,” said Hughton to Sky Sports.Daniel Fark, Norwich City, Premier LeagueDaniel Farke, From mid-table in the Championship to the Premier League Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Norwich City manager, Daniel Farke, has taken his team from the middle of the table in the English Championship to play with the big boys in the Premier League.“They all have different circumstances. One is about the form of the players. In Florin Andone’s situation, he came with an injury and had a couple of little problems that stopped his progress being as quick as he would have liked.”“Bernardo is a real talent at left-back and I think has got a bright future for us – but my choices have been a bit different and that can happen,” he added.“Of course if the team is doing well enough – and we have stated okay – you don’t make those changes. But I fully expect the new players we brought in to play a big part this season.”“I think that’s normal,” he said. “The progress of new players can be down to so many things; a settling in period, how well the team is going, what position they play etc.”last_img read more

Barcelona wont stop until they also sign Matthijs de Ligt

first_imgAfter finally landing Frenkie de Jong’s transfer for next summer, FC Barcelona won’t stop until they have also sealed the deal for Matthijs de Ligt. At the very start of the season, there was a number of publications that talked constantly about FC Barcelona signing both Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt as a duo. After the midfielder was announced earlier this week, the Catalan club has already secured one of the two players they were after and they are now ready to keep their assault on the other main target.Defender Matthijs de Ligt recently spoke to NU Sport after his teammate Frenkie was announced, he revealed that he is feeling very happy for the decision De Jong has made and he didn’t deny the rumors that still tie him to FC Barcelona. The player knows that trying to go against those rumors can only make things worse for him, so he decided to keep working hard on the squad and just wait for any possible development about his future to fall into his lap.The whole negotiation process might prove to be even more complicated than Frenkie’s because the “cat’s out of the bag” in regards to Barcelona’s intentions, and several other clubs are also after Ajax’s young skipper.#VÍDEO Matthijs de Ligt declara su amor al @FCBarcelona_es 😍 #FCB #FCBLive #Mercado pic.twitter.com/OJ6af1MbFW— Mundo Deportivo TV (@Multimedia_MD) January 25, 2019While talking to NU Sport about the possibility of signing a new contract with Barcelona, Matthijs de Ligt revealed the following: “I can’t stop journalists from discussing the rumors, that is part of football,” said De Ligt on NU Sport.“Now that Frenkie has sealed his transfer, rumors about me getting stronger is a possibility but all I care about is playing my games for Ajax right now and that is the only thing I care about at the moment.”“I will just keep doing my thing and everything will be okay. I do think that any player would love to play for a club like FC Barcelona sometime in his career.”“We will see where I end up, right now I’m happy at Ajax and I hope I can have a great season here. Or maybe even more than just one season.”“I think it’s great for Frenkie to play for FC Barcelona. He deserves it and it’s fantastic for him to finally be able to stop talking about the affair, although his transfer negotiations didn’t really affect his concentration with us.”FC Barcelona, Valencia CFMatch Preview: Barcelona vs Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Is derby time in La Liga, as Barcelona welcomes Valencia to the Camp Nou Stadium tonight at 21:00 (CET).“My replacement? Lisandro Magallan has proved that he is an experienced player, he knows exactly what the club wants from him as a defender,” he concluded.”Todos querrían ir al Barcelona”.– De Ligt pic.twitter.com/iz9nyCQRyu— Blaugrana FC (@BlaugranaFC10) January 25, 2019For FC Barcelona signing Matthijs won’t be easy at all because the rest of the clubs that were after Frenkie de Jong, will obviously double down on De Ligt as some of them considered that the Catalan club beat them to the punch in the race to sign the midfielder.Paris Saint-Germain in specific is very troubled against Barcelona, as they have not only beaten them to sign De Jong but they have also rattled the cage with Adrien Rabiot and practically forced the player to not sign a new contract extension.Nasser Al-Khelaifi has the plan of going after Philipe Coutinho next summer according to Diario Sport, he wants to take one of the best players the Catalan club has and find a replacement for all the missing midfielder the French club has at the moment. They will not only come after the Brazilian, but they will also attempt to take De Ligt out of Barcelona’s hands if they can.To those who don’t remember, this whole war between both clubs started when FC Barcelona tried to sign Italian Marco Verratti and wasn’t able to complete the deal.PSG then came to sign Neymar in revenge for that, and Barcelona now has landed the second blow against PSG.1/2 Sólo falta De ligt @FCBarcelona_es pic.twitter.com/mAnXlVYKAK— Pablo👽 (@P4bloT) January 25, 2019Which club would be better for Matthijs de Ligt to continue his professional career, FC Barcelona or PSG?
