Arteta blow for Gunners

“(Thomas) Vermaelen is out, (Nacho) Monreal is out and Arteta will be out for this game tomorrow as well. That is the three main injuries we have at the moment. Monreal is not far from coming back. Arteta and Vermaelen are a bit longer,” Wenger said. “It could be as long (as six weeks for Arteta), but honestly we don’t know yet. We have to check the severity with the doctor. I haven’t talked to the doctor.” The Gunners have yet to land a high-profile signing this summer, with France Under-21 striker Yaya Sanogo, on a free transfer from Auxerre, the only new arrival so far as the protracted pursuit of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez drags on. Given Wenger has also jettisoned several fringe players this summer to free up the wage bill, Arsenal could find themselves somewhat stretched in terms of numbers ahead of their crucial Champions League play-off against Fenerbahce. Wenger added: “I don’t disagree that we are a bit light at the moment. There are 18 days to go until the end of the transfer market and we are of course looking to strengthen our squad.” Arsenal failed to land Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain earlier in the summer, and it appears they will need to up their bid for Suarez to closer to£50million to have any hope of move the negotiations on. Wenger refused to be further drawn on the saga. He said: “Look, I don’t want to come out on any specific name because that would not be right. Usually in the press, you are well informed. Arsenal have been dealt a blow with the news that Mikel Arteta could be out for up to six weeks with a thigh injury. The full extent of the Spanish midfielder’s problem is still to be discovered, but Gunners manager Arsene Wenger did at least receive a boost regarding the fitness of Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey ahead of their Barclays Premier League opener at home to Aston Villa. Walcott limped out of England’s 3-2 friendly win over Scotland with a knee injury while Ramsey did not feature for Wales at home to the Republic of Ireland due to an ankle problem. “Ideally you would want it to be quicker, but to finalise any transfer you need the agreement of three parties. You can see from our main rivals that it is not easy. “At us, Chelsea, Man United, it is difficult to find the quality players to strengthen the team and the squad who are available at the moment, but there are a shortage of top, top, top players who are available. “We look more for quality than for numbers. The first request is to have the quality to play for Arsenal Football Club. Yes, we would like two or three players, if possible more, but we will not compromise on the quality of the players. “I understand every frustration, you have so many frustrated people, but what is important is the quality of what you do on the pitch, so let’s not create a crisis from nothing. “We just played a good game last week (to beat Manchester City 3-1 in Helsinki), so let’s transfer that to the next game and not start to convince everybody that the quality of the team that starts tomorrow will be linked with the number of players we buy between today and tomorrow. “The quality of the team will be linked with the performance of every player who plays tomorrow.” Press Association read more

High court to settle dispute over missing professors pension payments

first_imgOTTAWA – The Supreme Court of Canada will decide whether an Ottawa university can reclaim almost $500,000 in pension payments to a professor who went missing before being found dead in the woods near his home.George Roseme, a political science professor at Carleton University, was 77 and suffering from early-stage Alzheimer’s disease when he disappeared in September 2007.A six-day search of the area near Roseme’s home in nearby west Quebec failed to locate him.Roseme had signed a memorandum agreeing that his pension payments would cease with his death, rather than going to his heirs or estate. When the university learned of Roseme’s disappearance, Carleton informed Lynne Threlfall — his former partner and recipient of the pension monies as his property administrator — that it would cease payments. The university was forced to reverse the decision after Threlfall pointed out that under Quebec law, Roseme was presumed to be alive for seven years after his disappearance or until there was proof of death. In July 2013, Roseme’s remains were discovered by a dog in the woods near his property, and a coroner’s investigation concluded he had died in 2007.Shortly afterward, the university went to court to recoup the $497,332 in pension monies paid to Threlfall since 2008.Threlfall unsuccessfully argued in Quebec Superior Court that she should not have to return the payments, given that Roseme’s death had only recently been confirmed. A three-judge appeal panel upheld the decision against Threlfall, prompting her appeal to the Supreme Court. As usual, the high court gave no reason Thursday for agreeing to take the case and no date has been set for a hearing.last_img read more

Ohio State mens soccer swats injury bug

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s soccer team is on the verge of getting healthy – finally. OSU (1-2-1) has gotten contributions from players that have recently returned from injury and, with one notable exception, more players are expected to rejoin the team. Coach John Bluem, who will start working previously injured players back into the lineup, told The Lantern he is looking forward to having a healthy team back together. “We’re not completely injury free,” Bluem said. “We’re a little bit nicked up right now. Guys are returning from injuries, but it has slowed down our ability to have everybody fit and ready to contribute at times.” Bluem is especially concerned about senior defender Ben Killian, who fractured a bone in his foot. “Ben will probably red shirt this year,” Bluem said. “He broke his fifth metatarsal . That’s a tough injury to come back from. He might be able to rejoin us for practices in late October but his fitness will not be good enough to play.” However, there are other valuable players Bluem is happy to bring off the bench, including sophomore forward Kenny Cunningham. “Kenny had some good minutes tonight and he’s just returning from an injury,” Bluem said. Cunningham returned to the lineup Aug. 24 in a game against Dayton after tearing his hip flexor. In just his third game back, Cunningham scored the game-winner in overtime against Davidson Sunday to help OSU clinch its second consecutive Bert and Iris Wolstein Clasic championship. “I’m definitely trying to come back strong and work on everything,” Cunningham said. “I know I’m not in the best shape I can be in and I just need to work on my fitness.” Senior midfielder Sebastian Rivas agrees with Bluem that there are plenty of players to bring off the bench. “Depth-wise, we have a lot of people who can start to come off the bench and start and contribute for us,” Rivas said. “Now that we’re starting to get healthy I think we can all start giving 100 percent.” Bluem said he knows rebounding from injuries can be a struggle, but he is looking forward to having most of his team back together soon. “Hopefully we can go through a stretch soon where we stop having injuries,” Bluem said. OSU continues play Friday at San Diego. Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. read more

Ohio State wins game for the ages against Michigan State

Senior tight end Jeff Heuerman (left), redshirt-sophomore offensive lineman Pat Elflein, Shelley Meyer, and coach Urban Meyer sing ‘Carmen Ohio’ following a game against Michigan State on Nov. 8 in East Lansing, Mich. OSU won, 49-37. Credit: Mark Batke / Photo editorBreathe in. Breathe out. But make it quick. That’s the mindset Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer had after his team topped Michigan State on Saturday night in East Lansing, Mich.“We can’t exhale very long,” Meyer said after his Buckeyes won, 49-37, in a rematch of the 2013 Big Ten title game. “We go on the road next week against a team that whooped Iowa.”The Buckeyes (8-1, 5-0) now sit alone atop the Big Ten East Division standings after breaking a tie with the Spartans, but are scheduled to travel to Minneapolis on Saturday to take on Minnesota. The Golden Gophers shellacked the Hawkeyes to the tune of a 51-14 win Saturday to move to 7-2 on the season.Despite the implications the win against the Spartans has for the Buckeyes going forward, senior defensive lineman Michael Bennett said the most important focus for OSU has to be put on the Golden Gophers.“The biggest thing is making sure guys are ready for that game,” Bennett said after the win. “Minnesota is a really good opponent. They’ve been winning a lot of games.”Going forward, redshirt-freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett — who threw for 300 yards and ran for another 86 while scoring five total touchdowns against the Spartans — said preparation will be key for OSU going forward.“One of the main things we need to do is just make sure we practice hard,” Barrett said after the game. “We’re going to enjoy this, but knowing that we still need to play better next week.”After a run of four straight games starting at either 3:30 or 8 p.m., Bennett added it will be important to be ready to go for a noon kick against Minnesota.“It’s gonna be the first noon game or whatever it is in like four weeks, so we’re gonna have to make sure that guys are mentally ready for it and can still get the juice up that we had tonight,” he said. But even with Minnesota on the horizon, Bennett said the win against Michigan State keeps the Buckeyes’ long-term goals in the realm of possibility after the Spartans dashed OSU’s title hopes last year with a 34-24 win in the 2013 Big Ten Championship Game.“Like I said before, it’s not about revenge. It’s about accomplishing what we can accomplish this year,” he said. “And so by having that big win over a really good team, it really just keeps everything alive and starts putting us in the conversation.”That conversation surrounds the College Football Playoff standings, with this season being the first year of the new championship format. Heading into Saturday, the Buckeyes were firmly on the outside looking in with a No. 14 ranking in the CFP poll, but they picked up a win against the Spartans — which are No. 8 in the poll — that few people expected them to have. When the new Associated Press top 25 was released Sunday, OSU was No. 8 while the Spartans fell to No. 12.Sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott — who picked up 154 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game — said OSU came in as the underdogs looking to make a national statement.“We had no one behind our back except for Buckeye nation and ourselves,” Elliott said after the game. “We just had to come out and prove to the world that we’re ready.”Meyer called the win “one for the ages,” and added he felt his team showed its worth under the lights at Spartan Stadium.“We played a top-10 team and we really played our best and on the road,” he said. When it comes to his team’s standing in the playoff picture, Meyer said he still doesn’t “know enough,” but made clear his feelings on where the Buckeyes should be.“I think it is,” Meyer — who earned a $330,000 raise after the 2013 season — said as to whether OSU is a playoff-caliber team. “I love my team.”While the CFP poll will decide who has a shot at a national championship come season’s end — the top four teams earn spots in the playoff — OSU co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Ed Warinner said the Buckeyes regained confidence in themselves with the win.“I think we earned back the belief our players have in our program, belief in how we do things at Ohio State, how coach Meyer runs his program,” Warinner said after the game. “We just got our confidence back that we can win a big game, especially on the road.”Barrett agreed with Warinner, and added the win helped to prove the Buckeyes’ doubters wrong.“It really gave us confidence that we could play with the best of them because there was talk that we could only play well against very bad teams,” he said. “This was a very good team in Michigan State, and we came out and played well.”Just like Warinner and Barrett, Bennett said the win gave OSU confidence, but he added that it showed the Buckeyes are the “real deal,” and said it should put them in consideration for a playoff spot moving forward.“It just kind of gives us confidence; it makes other people just kind of turn their heads and start considering Ohio State for the top four,” he said. But while a panel will vote the top four on, the Buckeyes can control their own destiny when it comes to the Big Ten. After sitting in a tie with Michigan State, the win firmly established OSU as tops in the conference for the time being.Senior wide receiver Devin Smith — who Meyer said had his best game in an OSU uniform against the Spartans — said he was “angry” after last year’s loss, coupled with the Buckeyes’ image as underdogs, heading into East Lansing. He said the win showed the conference and the nation what kind of team OSU is.“We came out here and (made) a statement,” Smith said after the game. “And then that shows that we are the best team in the Big Ten, and we try to play like that.”Regardless of the Big Ten standing, or even the Buckeyes’ spot in the CFP poll, Meyer said he simply knows how well his team is playing right now, and added he’ll have to wait and see what that means going forward.“This team right now is playing on a very, very high level,” Meyer said. “I’m not sure what all that means other than we got to get ready to play next week.” read more

OSU won, 96-86.Credit: Nina Budeiri / Lantern photographerIn a tight contest, the Ohio State women’s basketball team defeated Virginia Commonwealth after pulling away late in the game.OSU junior guard Ameryst Alston got the action started with a quick layup in the opening seconds of the 96-86 win. Both teams shot the ball well through the first six minutes as the game was tied, 20-20. Then a jumper from freshman guard Kelsey Mitchell sparked a 19-7 run over a span of nine minutes to take a 39-27 lead for the Buckeyes.Virginia Commonwealth outscored OSU, 16-13, in the last 5:48 of the half to make the score 52-43 as the teams headed to the locker room. The Buckeyes shot 58 percent from the field in the first half, while holding the Rams to 37 percent. The Rams opened the second half with an 8-0 run to cut the Buckeye lead to just one point. But OSU answered with an 11-2 run to bring the lead back into double digits. OSU went on to score seven unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game, 70-56.Virginia Commonwealth cut the deficit to six with less than nine minutes remaining. After an 8-2 run by OSU, the Rams hit three consecutive 3-pointers to pull the game within three with less than four minutes remaining in the half. The Buckeyes closed out the game on a 14-7 run to get the 10-point victory.OSU improved to 2-2 for the season. Alston led all scorers with 34 points while Mitchell added 29 of her own. Freshman forward Alexa Hart came off the bench to tally 12 points along with eight blocks.Alston said the team excelled in finding an offensive rhythm throughout the game.  “I think we did a pretty good job, we got a nice little pace going,” Alston said. “We kind of got stagnant for a little while but I think we did pretty good offensively.”Redshirt-senior guard Amy Scullion added three points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Buckeyes. Scullion was in action for the first time since the end of the 2013-14 season after initially forgoing her final year of eligibility to attend medical school. Scullion said that while she had some anxiety at the start of the game, it eventually wore off. “Not going to lie, I was a little nervous, I felt like a freshman again,” Scullion said. “Once we started going up and down a little bit it wasn’t bad.”Mitchell found herself in foul trouble, earning four throughout the game. Mitchell said that she’s still making the transition from playing defense in high school to college.  “I’m in the process of learning,” she said. “I know I’m at the collegiate level so stuff I used to get away with in high school, I’m not going to get away with. I know as I grow, my fouls have to stop.”Coach Kevin McGuff said Mitchell’s fouls are a result of her effort on the court and sees them as something she’ll eventually overcome.“She’s so competitive and is always trying to make a play for her team that sometimes she gets herself in a little bit of trouble, but she’ll grow through that,” McGuff said. Up next for OSU is a trip to the Virgin Islands to participate in the Paradise Jam. The Buckeyes are scheduled to take on Clemson on Thursday at 1:15 p.m. in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. read more

Long before, the Buckeyes had seen his work firsthand, even if they didn’t know his name.“When I was at Robert Morris, we played Ohio State,” Hoy said. “In talking to these guys, they’re just like ‘Man, every time we turn around you guys were there. You never got tired, you were always hitting us.’”Before joining Ohio State, Hoy worked as a strength and conditioning coach all over the country. He’s coached at his own gym in Pittsburgh, with the gold medal-winning 2018 US Under-18 Women’s National Team and most recently at Robert Morris University, where the Colonials faced off against Ohio State multiple times during Hoy’s career. Hoy said he prides himself on the way he prepares his teams for the ice. He spends his time working out players, evaluating them during practice to identify their needs and, above all, making sure the team is game ready.“I’m responsible for a lot of aspects of physical preparation,” he said. “I’m making sure the guys are ready to go, I’m working with the athletic training staff to make sure they’re healthy … I’m going to recondition them, making sure they’re ready to go and they’re game ready all the time.”One aspect of the job Hoy focuses on is the relationship he forms with the team and each individual player. He works with each player to assess where they are and ensure they are in the best possible condition when they hit the ice. With the science behind strength and conditioning improving since Hoy entered the field nearly 20 years ago, there is a greater focus on each individual player rather than assuming a strength and conditioning routine works for everyone. The lessons from Hoy and the athletic training staff, however, don’t end in the weight room, or even on the ice.“What I feel like we’re doing is not preparing them to possibly play hockey at the next level … but we want them to be able to contribute to society in a positive way beyond college,” Hoy said. “When they’re done we want them to be able to enter the real world and have a positive impact from what they do.”Once the preparation is finalized for each game, Hoy said he holds a different perspective when his team enters the rink. Coaches and players focus on running plays and optimizing their strategy on the ice to win. Hoy still wants the team to win, but he has a different set of expectations for his players than most going into their games.“I feel like I haven’t done a good enough job if our team is being out-skated, out-conditioned, even out-hustled,” Hoy said. “I want to get the guys going. I want to be the one winning in all those areas every time. I also feel like I’m not doing my job if guys aren’t game ready.”While Hoy has only been at Ohio State for about a month, head coach Steve Rohlik believes he’s already left an impression on the team.“In the small sample we’ve had, he’s made a big impact,” Rohlik said. “No. 1 because he wants to be here … his energy, his knowledge and what he brings, his history, and the work he’s done for almost 20 years. Our guys have bought into his tremendous work ethic.”As Hoy prepares for his first season with Ohio State, his message to the team is clear.“I want to be the team that we’re talented and we’re going to outwork you. We’re going to bring both those together,” he said. “That starts here on the ice. Everything we do, it’s a mentality, a mindset that were going to work hard, give 100 percent effort and we’re engaged in doing everything we do.” read more

New App Helps Service Members Families Locate Military Discounts

first_img ADC AUTHOR Service members and their families now can have access to a new app that helps them find military discounts in their location. The communities of Savannah and Hinesville, Ga., near Fort Stewart, are among the most recent to gain access to the new app that allows local service members and their families to find the best military discounts in their area, Fox28Media reported. The app, Deal Patrol, was released in the area Wednesday and offers service members a comprehensive database of military discounts that are accessible through the free and user-friendly app.Deal Patrol, which has also been released in other military communities, is free through Apple’s App Store and Android’s Google Play. Once installed, service members and their families can use it wherever they travel, and businesses can also submit their military discounts using the app.Launched in 2018, Military Deal Patrol was founded by two veterans who recognized the need for a comprehensive and user-friendly app to find local military discounts.“When I was a cadet at the Air Force Academy, I was always looking for the places that had military discounts,” said Military Deal Patrol Co-Founder and CEO Gavin Light. “I thought, ‘why hasn’t anyone built a comprehensive database where all the discounts are easy to find?’ Everyone likes to save money. We’re making it easier for the military community.”Logo credit to Deal Patrollast_img read more

USB sticks may beat Internet hurdles globally

first_img More information: Spreading huge free software without internet connection, via self-replicating USB keys, arXiv:1311.6754 [cs.OH] arxiv.org/abs/1311.6754AbstractWe describe and discuss an affordable way to spread huge software without relying on internet connection, via the use of self-replicating live USB keys. Intel Unveils Extensible Host Controller Interface Draft Specification to Support USB 3.0 Architecture Unfortunately, he wrote, the cost of bandwidth is expensive relative to the local income in countries and, even beyond cost, the available bandwidth does not allow huge downloads. “The network consideration “seems to be an important bottleneck in spreading free software where bandwidth is a rare commodity,” he stated. What the author has in mind instead is a self-replicating USB thumbdrive. The script will let a bootable USB stick replicate itself onto another stick, and at rates that can top the users’ Internet connections.MIT Technology Review noted how the concept involves a self-replicating bootable USB stick that holds an operating system and any software that needs to run on it. The stick can copy its contents to another USB stick. That way, users in underserved parts of the globe can get their hands on information they need more easily. Monteil wrote a script that clones the contents of one USB stick to another. To test the idea, Monteil used the script to transfer Sage, with an installation of Debian. Sage (stands for Software for Algebra and Geometry Experimentation) is a free mathematics software system licensed under the GPL The use of USB sticks for transferring information, nonetheless, carries a risk where someone could inject malware as part of the cloning events. “While being very efficient for our purpose of spreading huge free software inside a community, it is definitely not advisable for spreading sensitive software, or for large-scale distribution,” he wrote. Monteil also observed how “This communication-via-replication protocol currently relies on trust, and should be only used “for short distance communication…or among “a small structured community.” Citation: USB sticks may beat Internet hurdles globally (2013, December 6) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-12-usb-internet-hurdles-globally.html (Phys.org) —One may think that free software would be of enormous benefit to people in the towns and villages of the globe where the price of proprietary software is restrictively high. Such is not the case, as noted by Thierry Monteil of the University of Montpellier 2 in France. While the software is free to download, the cost of bandwidth is not. What is more, important but large software packages that enable technology students and workers to carry out their projects may take very long times to download, and may regularly be at the mercy of unreliable Internet connections. Monteil has authored a paper available on arXiv, which presents what may be a cheaper and easier way to transmit large software packages. He has written the paper, “Spreading Huge Free Software without Internet Connection via Self-Replicating USB Keys.” The paper describes his concept and how he tested it out. In short, one can use self-replicating USB keys without having to rely on a hard-to-afford and time-draining Internet connection. This document is subject to copyright.
