Cost of back to school shopping criticised for putting Donegal families under pressure

first_imgPádraig Mac Lochlainn has said that there is in an urgent need to tackle the cost of sending children to school. The Donegal Senator said that Sinn Fein’s proposed a ‘Back to School Bonus’ of €140 per child to be paid to all families in the summer months to help tackle rising cost. The proposal is contained in a new policy document ‘Lets End Back to School Stress’, published by Sinn Féin. Senator Mac Lochlainn said: “Back to School costs make the summer months an extremely difficult time for many households across Donegal. Every summer, parents are put to the pin of their collar trying to organise uniforms, shoes, books, so-called ‘voluntary contributions’ and much more.“More than any other time of year, it is abundantly clear that ‘free education’ is a myth and parents are forking out, on average, €949 to get children ready for primary school and €1,399 for secondary school.“All of this is contributing to financial worry for many and that is why Sinn Féin is proposing a new ‘Back to School Bonus’ of €140 per child to be paid to all families in July.“This would be a double payment of Child Benefit to be paid to all families for each child, which would go some way to tackling rising Back to School costs and help ease the burden on families during the summer months. “We would also tackle the increasing use of so-called ‘voluntary contributions’ by properly funding schools through restoring Capitation Grants to pre-recession levels.“And we would legislate to ensure that schools work towards providing affordable uniforms, as well as increasing funding to the School Books Scheme to deliver free schoolbooks for all children.”Cost of back to school shopping criticised for putting Donegal families under pressure was last modified: August 19th, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Court preserves privacy of farms

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest In a late September ruling on their ongoing fight to protect private and sensitive personal and financial records, a U.S. District Court judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by animal-rights and environmental activists against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over the agency’s withdrawal of a proposed Clean Water Act (CWA) rule that would have required livestock and poultry operations to report information about their operations.EPA’s proposed Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) Reporting Rule sought to have CAFOs submit to the agency operational information so it could “more effectively carry out its CAFO permitting programs on a national level and ensure that CAFOs are implementing practices to protect water quality and human health.” EPA wanted facility facts such as contact information, location of a CAFO’s production area, CWA permit status, the number and type of animals confined and the number of acres available for land application of manure. It withdrew the proposal in July 2012.The proposed rule was prompted by a May 2010 “sweetheart” settlement agreement EPA entered with the Natural Resources Defense Council, Waterkeeper Alliance — then represented by Hannah Connor, currently an attorney for the Humane Society of the United States, which joined the most recent suit against EPA — and the Sierra Club once it became clear the agency would lose a lawsuit brought by the National Pork Producers Council over EPA’s 2008 CAFO rule. That regulation required, among other things, that large livestock operations that propose to or that might discharge into waterways obtain CWA permits. (A federal court said the clean water law requires permits only for operations that actually discharge.)“Let’s hope this puts an end to these groups, including HSUS, trying to get information on farmers so they can file nuisance suits and otherwise harass people who are providing safe, wholesome products to domestic and international consumers,” said Dr. Ron Prestage, NPPC President, a veterinarian and pork producer from Camden, S.C.In their lawsuit, the activist groups claimed EPA’s withdrawal of the reporting rule was “arbitrary and capricious” because it lacked clear reasoning, ran counter to the evidence in the administrative record and constituted a “clear error in judgment.”Judge Randolph Moss of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington, D.C., who dismissed the suit, disagreed with the activist groups, saying the agency’s explanation for the withdrawal was “plain and coherent” and that it “adequately explained the basis for its decision.”last_img read more

The 4 Most Common Geocache Hiding Mistakes

first_imgFollow these four tips and you’ll avoid many of the common hurdles geocache hiders face. And while this is the end of this blog post, it’s not the end of what you need to know. Check out the Hiding Overview before placing a geocache and avoid these pitfalls and create smiles like the one below! This is the “OMG” look we’re aiming for.Share with your Friends:More Make your geocache smile… 4 things to avoid when hiding a geocache(Cough Cough) Hello class, and welcome to a quick installment of the 4 most Common Geocache Hiding Mistakes. Why read on? It’s like knowing the four common routes where there’s a bridge out, or heavy road construction, or a locust migration. These are all mistakes a new hider doesn’t have to make. Let’s learn together and if at any point you’d like to know more, check out the Hiding Overview for all you need to know. Here are the four guidelines that potential cache owners most commonly overlook:1) Choose an Appropriate LocationThink like a non-geocacher and ask yourself, “Self, am I placing this geocache somewhere where it could be mistaken for something dangerous?” Also ask yourself if geocache hunting behavior (i.e. looking through bushes) might draw attention in sensitive areas, like schools. And make sure you know whether or not geocaches are allowed in that location. Some areas require a permit, are private property, or don’t allow geocaching altogether. Ask a land manager or owner for permission when needed.2) Consider Proximity to Other GeocachesGeocaches must be at least 1/10 mile or 528 feet (161 meters) apart. Check the area for other geocaches before settling on a spot. There’s a great new planning map tool to help you, with red circles showing places that are already blocked by another geocache. It won’t tell you about secret locations, but it will catch a lot of the locations that have already been taken.3) Avoid Commercialization/AgendasGeocaches cannot be commercial or used to publicize an agenda. Sometimes people get tripped up by the commercial guideline unintentionally. There are lots of platforms that you can use to get the word out about your important cause or a business that you really (really) like, but geocaches are not an appropriate platform for that.4) Don’t Damage PropertyTelephone poles and stop signs seem like they are public property because they are so familiar, but they are the property of the city or utility company. Don’t damage things in the environment. Screwing or drilling into a live tree creates an pathway for insects and disease. Never bury a geocache, even partway. If you have to make a hole in the ground, it’s not OK. Christmas debt hangover cure starts with retracing holiday transactions

first_imgCALGARY – Like the morning after too many eggnogs the night before, many Canadian families are waking up this week to the pounding headache of a Christmas debt hangover. But credit counsellors say there’s a cure for those who have the courage to face their painful situation.Mike, a 38-year-old from Vancouver, remembers his desperation when he finally realized he needed help about five years ago.“I had no other choice. I had like $1 left on my credit card,” he said.“I had the ability to make money but no matter how much I made, I was paying it out in debt payments every month. Something had to change.”Mike, who asked his last name be withheld, owned a failing metal fabrication business in Vancouver. The trouble was he didn’t realize how badly it was failing — there wasn’t enough money coming in to cover the payments on his $20,000 business loan, resulting in him running up about $15,000 in debt on his credit cards. He described his financial plan at the time as “delusional.”For instance, although he knew he had to pay taxes, he didn’t because he couldn’t afford it. Similarly, when he calculated his income, he would look only at the revenue side and not at his crippling expenses.Today, he credits two forces for helping him get out of the quagmire — his now-wife, who let him move in with her to control living costs, and the Credit Counselling Society, which helped him consolidate his debt and pay it down with affordable $400 monthly payments.Scott Hannah, founder and president of the society, says most of its clients just need a little advice, but the society will also negotiate with creditors and collect payments on their behalf from the client in about one in five cases.“Christmas itself is a very stressful time,” he said. “When you add on financial difficulties, it just magnifies the amount of stress.”The society is one of several not-for-profit members of Credit Counselling Canada, organizations financed mainly by lending institutions that offer free debt-counselling services. It has offices in the western provinces, the North and in Ontario.Another is Money Mentors, which has offices throughout Alberta.“All too often, we see people who come in here and they’re still paying off their Christmas debt from last year,” said Money Mentors counsellor Brian Betz.“It goes on the credit card, they’re making minimum payments. They’re still paying it off and they don’t realize that.”The two agreed that the first step to getting out of debt is to get an accurate picture of where the money is going. Online bank and credit card statements can help clients identify non-essential expenses that can be reduced.Hannah said it’s important that credit cards are put on ice — “You can’t get out of debt if you keep using debt.”Setting a realistic budget is the next step. Many make the mistake of trying to pay down the debt so quickly there’s no money for essentials and the plan fails.A good budget should include a savings plan, so that unexpected expenses are easier to deal with. Families should also budget a strictly limited amount of “fun money,” Hannah said.Betz said figuring out how much Christmas cost this year will make next year’s holiday more enjoyable.“If I’m going to spend $1,200 on Christmas, that’s $100 a month I have to put aside,” he said.Dealing with the debt could involve getting a low interest consolidation loan from a bank. Or you could accelerate payments on high interest rate debt such as credit cards and pay the minimum on less expensive debt. The counsellors said too many Canadians wait too long to get help with their credit problems. The Bank of Canada calculates consumers owe about $1.71 for every dollar of household disposable income.Hannah said he thinks consumer debt will continue to grow in 2018, especially in Alberta and Saskatchewan, where the oil price slump of the past three years continues to put pressure on consumers with too much debt.Debt-free and with a full-time government job, Mike still dreams of being his own boss but is framing those dreams in much more realistic terms these days.“Definitely, now I can afford to buy more Christmas presents for the nieces and nephews,” he said. “I was never the uncle who brings presents before.”Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter.last_img read more

Commentary Reds Indians managers produce same results with different styles

Courtesy of MCTBoth the Cleveland and Cincinnati baseball organizations have managers that are familiar with winning. Although the two men have different managing techniques, they both seem to know which buttons to push. Cleveland’s Terry Francona’s loose way of orchestrating seems to fit his team’s persona. On the other hand, Cincinnati’s Dusty Baker’s calm approach to guiding a team appears to work, but has not gotten his team over the hump to win a championship. It is not farfetched to believe the Indians can win a championship with Francona at the helm. The former Boston manager won two titles with the Red Sox, one where his team defeated the Tribe in the American League Championship Series before winning it all in 2007.With a little over half of his first season as the Tribe’s manager under his belt, Francona has seen a fair amount of success with his new team. The Indians are second in the division, trailing the Tigers by 2.5 games. In recent years, the Indians have been in this identical position leading up to the All-Star break, but then find themselves in the back of the pack by season’s end. With the way the season has gone so far, it’s looking more and more like Francona has a formula that will keep his team in the playoff race into September.Cleveland’s skipper has a bit of a loose approach when it comes to managing. He likes his players to have fun on the field, and his loose personality appears to be working well with the team’s character. An example of Francona’s easy going style came before the start of the season when the team took part in the nationwide craze of making a “Harlem Shake” dance video.Although Cleveland has gone through a few managers over the past ten seasons the Reds have not, as Baker is in his six straight year with the organization.Although some may want Baker out of Cincinnati, no one can complain about him leading his ball club to two division titles in the last three years. The Reds won their division both in 2010 and again in 2012. Before the 2010 season, the only time Cincinnati had won the central division was in 1995. That year also marks the last year the Reds made the playoffs prior to the Baker era. He has turned the franchise into a consistent playoff contender. As great as it is that Baker has won division titles in Cincinnati, the higher goal is to get deep into the playoffs and win a World Series. The last two playoff appearances for the Reds have been the opposite of that. In 2010, Cincinnati was swept in three games in the divisional series against Philadelphia. The 2012 squad had a 2-0 lead on San Francisco before losing the next three games at home in the divisional series. Baker has been an outstanding manager in regards to getting his teams to the playoffs, but the playoff appearances are short-lived.Baker’s managing style is mainly laid back and relaxed, though there are times where he gets intense and wears his emotions on his sleeve. How the squad is this season, he may have to be more forward than usual in order to get his team on a roll. This 2013 team appears to be the type needing a constant push, seeming to have no sense of urgency. During one of the club’s more recent hitting slumps, second baseman Brandon Phillips said they would eventually get out of it. Baker needs to be more assertive and tell his players that eventually is not good enough. Both managers have the makeup of bringing championships to their respective cities. With this being Francona’s first year in Cleveland, he has a couple seasons to prove himself. Baker does not have that luxury with this being his sixth year in Cincinnati. The rest of the season is important to both franchises and managers as each are making a playoff push. read more

first_imgReal Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas insists that he is “calm” over his future, despite reports suggesting that he could soon be dropped in favour of Thibaut Courtois’ arrival from Chelsea this summerNavas has been the first-choice at the Santiago Bernabeu for the past three years but, in that period, he has often been on the receiving end of criticism and uncertainty over his future.Following Real’s failed attempts to sign either David de Gea and Alisson from Manchester United and AS Roma respectively, the Spanish giants have now reportedly turned their attention to Chelsea’s unsettled number one goalkeeper Courtois. But after three years of constant rumours, Navas has evidently learned to just focus on himself.“I’m happy, the truth is that I’m very thankful to God because these are incredible opportunities,” said the 31-year-old, as stated on Marca.“I have all the hope in the world, just like in my first season.Sergio Ramos, Real MadridZidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante.“We’re going to work hard, putting effort in every day and we’ll keep enjoying what it is to be at Real Madrid.”When asked if he could be leaving Real this summer, Navas answered: “I’m calm, I have two more years on my contract, what I have to put my mind and energy into is how to improve every day, the effort that I have to put in,”“I have to enjoy every moment, we will see what happens in the future, but that doesn’t mean stop enjoying, I’m calm and I feel good.“I still have the same hope and excitement, to be competitive, to always want to win, it’s something you can never lose.”After joining Real from fellow La Liga side Levante in 2014, Navas has gone on to make 141 appearances in all competitions for the Champions League holders.last_img read more

Barcelona wont stop until they also sign Matthijs de Ligt

first_imgAfter finally landing Frenkie de Jong’s transfer for next summer, FC Barcelona won’t stop until they have also sealed the deal for Matthijs de Ligt. At the very start of the season, there was a number of publications that talked constantly about FC Barcelona signing both Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt as a duo. After the midfielder was announced earlier this week, the Catalan club has already secured one of the two players they were after and they are now ready to keep their assault on the other main target.Defender Matthijs de Ligt recently spoke to NU Sport after his teammate Frenkie was announced, he revealed that he is feeling very happy for the decision De Jong has made and he didn’t deny the rumors that still tie him to FC Barcelona. The player knows that trying to go against those rumors can only make things worse for him, so he decided to keep working hard on the squad and just wait for any possible development about his future to fall into his lap.The whole negotiation process might prove to be even more complicated than Frenkie’s because the “cat’s out of the bag” in regards to Barcelona’s intentions, and several other clubs are also after Ajax’s young skipper.#VÍDEO Matthijs de Ligt declara su amor al @FCBarcelona_es 😍 #FCB #FCBLive #Mercado pic.twitter.com/OJ6af1MbFW— Mundo Deportivo TV (@Multimedia_MD) January 25, 2019While talking to NU Sport about the possibility of signing a new contract with Barcelona, Matthijs de Ligt revealed the following: “I can’t stop journalists from discussing the rumors, that is part of football,” said De Ligt on NU Sport.“Now that Frenkie has sealed his transfer, rumors about me getting stronger is a possibility but all I care about is playing my games for Ajax right now and that is the only thing I care about at the moment.”“I will just keep doing my thing and everything will be okay. I do think that any player would love to play for a club like FC Barcelona sometime in his career.”“We will see where I end up, right now I’m happy at Ajax and I hope I can have a great season here. Or maybe even more than just one season.”“I think it’s great for Frenkie to play for FC Barcelona. He deserves it and it’s fantastic for him to finally be able to stop talking about the affair, although his transfer negotiations didn’t really affect his concentration with us.”FC Barcelona, Valencia CFMatch Preview: Barcelona vs Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Is derby time in La Liga, as Barcelona welcomes Valencia to the Camp Nou Stadium tonight at 21:00 (CET).“My replacement? World Diabetes Day WDD 2017 observed in Turks and Caicos

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#TurksandCaicos, November 11, 2017 – Providenciales – The Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Human Services joins the rest of the world in the observance of World Diabetes Day.   World Diabetes Day is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign and is observed every year on November 14.   Observance of this day aims to highlight key issues related to diabetes reaching over 1 billion people in over 160 countries. The theme of World Diabetes Day (WDD) 2017 – 14 November – is Women and Diabetes, with the slogan “Our right to a healthy future”, focusing on women currently living with diabetes and how women can self-manage their diabetes. The Director of Health Promotion and Advocacy Unit, Mrs. Aldora Robinson stated; “Diabetes is globally the 9th leading cause of death among women worldwide and locally 60.9% of persons diagnosed with diabetes in 2016 were women”  She continued;   “It is more difficult for women who have diabetes to become pregnant and in instances where they do, they are at risk of severe complications.   We as women must take better care of our health, we need to act now.”Girls and women with diabetes experience a range of challenges.   Power dynamics, gender roles and socioeconomic inequalities influence vulnerability to diabetes, exposing women to poor diet and nutrition and physical inactivity disproportionately.   These factors also affect women’s access to health services and health seeking behavior, it also amplifies the impact of diabetes on women, particularly in developing countries. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD), blindness, kidney failure and lower-limb amputation.Mrs. Lakiesha Wilson, Nutritionist within the Primary Care Department called for women to take a deep look into their diet and stated;  “In pregnancy, poorly controlled diabetes increases the risk of maternal and fetal complications, we are the care givers and nurturers in our families but take no time to look after ourselves”“Women with type 2 diabetes are 10 times more likely to have heart disease and have significantly increased risk of depression in comparison to men. Globally, there are more deaths attributable to diabetes in women than men.”The Minister of Health, Agriculture and Human Services Hon. Edwin Astwood added; “We must work together in our efforts to prevent and control diabetes in our population.   This requires the commitment of every resident in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”He continued; “While the government will do all that it can to provide the necessary treatment and care for those with diabetes, individuals also have a personal responsibility to take charge of their own health, and make healthy lifestyle choices.   I encourage all of us to make a personal commitment towards leading a healthy lifestyle, to minimize the impact of diabetes and other chronic non-communicable diseases on our women and our society at large.”For more information on Diabetes contact the Health Promotion and Advocacy Unit on 338-2772. Expand Your Ad Empire

first_imgApril 7, 2008 Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. The coolest ad technologies aren’t the ones that cost the most–they’re the ones that engage users. Thankfully, this year’s crop of cool tools doesn’t require the kind of attention your MySpace page does. From reaching people on their mobile to enhancing your online videos, these innovative ad trends can set you apart as a tech-savvy company while reaching users right when they’re ready to buy–and encouraging them to buy more.Bar Codes With Extra Info Register Now » If you’ve already started making online videos related to your products or services, adding overlay ads–or letting customers create them–is almost a no-brainer. With overlays, instead of just slotting in pre-, mid- or post-roll ad spots that nobody wants to watch, your ads become a part of the content, Pop-Up Video style.”The more relevant you can make an ad to the content, the more the ad becomes the content. And this, in turn, drives far higher click-through rates,” says Robert Lane, whose Ottawa-based business, Overlay.tv, is making overlay technology more accessible to businesses. The company allows anyone to take an online video and create overlay links in it for free. Then it gives you the code to embed your video on any website. Overlay.tv’s affiliate program also gives incentives to third-party content creators to link to your products.Soon, customers will be able to click on ads like these during their favorite TV shows, making product placement even more marketable. “Commercial TV, like you know it now, will be history in five years,” says Warbasse. “Stage display, seamless point-and-click advertising is going to be all the rage.”Bluetooth BeamingThough much has been made about Bluetooth’s ad capabilities since it started gaining popularity on people’s cell phones, it has only recently become a viable advertising technology. More than 60 percent of North American mobile phones sport Bluetooth and many new laptops and other portable gadgets come enabled with the beaming tech.Through Bluetooth, consumers can download coupons, short videos and audio files. They can then forward the content to other Bluetooth users with a P2P connection. It’s most effective at targeting consumers as they’re entering stores or theaters, walking around trade shows or attending sporting events, since shoppers are particularly receptive to getting coupons right before they buy a product.Prime Point Media, a Norcross, Georgia-based company with a network of more than 700,000 Bluetooth-enabled outdoor ad spots that has carried ads for Pepsi and the U.S. Navy, sees high response rates for its ads. Prime Point president, Karen Robinson, says rates of 13 to 20 percent are typical because of the ads’ relevance, street-level position and call to action.Bluetooth isn’t just for large companies, either. Robinson says a multi-month campaign can start as low as $5,000. She says the secret to using Bluetooth advertising effectively is having compelling, relevant content and not abusing your relationship with consumers.Other up-and-coming ad spaces are also providing new ways to reach potential clients on their mobiles. Jangl, for one, offers ad-sponsored, number-free text and voice messaging through social networking and dating sites–similar to how Yahoo! tacks on ads at the end of its users’ mail messages. And as digital billboards continue to become more sophisticated and interactive, they’re offering a lot of creative, albeit power-gobbling, options for advertisers, though their price points tend to be a bit high for independent businesses. As ad technology continues to change and new ad spaces open up, keep your ear to your mobile, your Bluetooth on and your camera at the ready. And don’t shy away from trying something new.center_img Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals While you may think of “airline check-in” or “mail tracking” when you see the black-and-white squiggles that make up QR, or “Quick Response” codes, these 2-D data matrices are beginning to find their place in advertising.Already popular in Japan and parts of Europe and the United States, these square-shaped codes can turn a plain old paper ad into an opt-in part of your campaign. Customers scan them with their camera phones to get a hidden plain-text message, a person’s contact info, a redirect to a mobile website, or a song or image download. One QR campaign developed for the clothing industry by Philip Warbasse, founder of Los Angeles-based Warbasse Design, puts the codes on in-store apparel that allows shoppers to purchase sizes not in stock–right on their phones. The codes also offer customers a same-day in-store coupon, and other codes in the campaign help upsell the customer with a discount on a second item in the store if they buy it the same day.Since QR codes cost essentially nothing to produce, go create your own and download a reader for your phone while you’re at it from i-nigma. You can create simple promotions like coupons inexpensively and quickly. One caveat is making sure your promotion will appear on customers’ phones as you intend it to, which means hiring someone with mobile design experience if you’re offering anything other than a plain-text promotion.A QR campaign will work best if your audience includes lots of tech-savvy mobile aficionados, but as an early adopter, you may also be able to garner interest from people unaware of the technology. Customers may be curious about the spotted squares, and you may even be able to parlay your new campaign into press about your business’s cutting-edge ad techniques.Video Overlay Ads 5 min readlast_img read more
