Karamba ‘dismayed’ over ad error

The bet rate will stay the same, but you may trigger more bonus features and, most importantly, wins”.In its ruling, the ASA said the advert must not appear again in its current form. The regulatory body has also spoken to Karamba to ensure future marketing communications contain nothing that is “likely to encourage irresponsible gambling behaviour that could lead to financial, social or emotional harm”.The ASA’s sanction comes after the regulator told iGamingBusiness.com earlier this month that it is examining whether World Cup adverts by Bet365 and William Hill contravened new gambling guidelines. David Williams takes public affairs role at Rank

first_img7th November 2018 | By contenteditor Former Ladbrokes media chief David Williams has been named as Rank Group’s first director of public affairs.Williams, who will join Rank in December, will lead the company’s new in-house government relations and public affairs division. He will also take a leadership role in the public relations activity for the group and its various brands, which include Grosvenor Casinos and Mecca Bingo.New Rank CEO John O’Reilly said the role would be “pivotal” as the company repositions itself through the transformational programme unveiled in August. By bolstering its public affairs team, the company will hope to avoid a repeat of the operational problems that led to a disastrous set of results for last year, including a failure to adapt to due diligence regulation changes which attracted the ire of O’Reilly when he presented the annual report.“David brings a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise to the group and I am delighted that we have secured him to fulfil what will be a pivotal role as we reposition Rank for success,” O’Reilly said.“His energy and passion for our industry, coupled with a track-record of delivering successful results will stand us in good stead for the regulatory challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”Williams joins Rank from the racecourse pool-betting operation, Britbet, where he had been the director of communications since January. He left Ladbrokes in May 2017 after spending 13 years at the company, most recently as director of media.Williams said: “Ensuring that our public affairs, social positioning and industry relations are compelling and in-tune with wider regulatory affairs has never been so significant.“I’ve been struck by just how much attention John and the Rank board wish to put on this area of the business.”Williams’ appointment comes just a week after Rank announced the arrival of new CFO William Floydd.O’Reilly outlined a four-part plan of action to revive Rank’s fortunes in August after revealing that a series of operational errors led to a disastrous set of financial results for the year to the end of June.He said that the failure to prepare for changes to due diligence regulations led to it being unable to allow many high-rolling customers to play during the year. This also led to problems with customer contact, with the company not able to communicate with many members for a period.“Rank’s performance isn’t good enough,” said O’Reilly, in a call with investors after the company reported an 8% year-on-year drop in operating profit to £20.9m.Just last month Rank Group was fined £500,000 (€572,500/$657,400) by the UK Gambling Commission for breaching problem gambling rules after a customer lost £1m in a single 24-hour period. The Gambling Commission said the fine would have been higher were it not for Rank’s self-reporting of its failures and transparency during the investigation. In a trading update issued last month, Rank reported that group revenue dropped almost 5% year-on-year in the 16 weeks to October, mainly due to declines within its venue business, where revenue was down around 6%. Esports for everyone

first_img In the first of a series on the future of esports and gaming, Michael Pollock argues that the future will belong to those prepared to defy conventional boundaries and target multiple demographicsHarrah’s Resort in Atlantic City recently held an esports tournament in which 44 tables of four players were set up. The seats were filled, and the atmosphere was tense. Players, who had spent countless hours perfecting their skills, clenched their jaws and settled into their seats. As the words such as “four bam” and “three crack” filled the air, chit-chat had ceased, and serious competition had commenced.Notably, if you were looking for a 16- or 18-year-old in this group, you would have had to rifle through the wallets of the participants to find pictures of their grandchildren. Indeed, if you had asked any of the gladiators in the room how long they have been playing esports, the response would have been issued in two parts. Part 1: “Sssh. Can’t you see I’m playing?” Part 2: (After a brief pause) “E-what?” For those who are still clueless as to the nature of this particular battlefield, we have one word for you: Mahjong. The demographics of the player could be described as overwhelmingly female (a handful of males were sprinkled among the players), over 50, with significant disposable income and an equally valuable commodity: prodigious amounts of free time to fill afternoons on a Monday and Tuesday. In every sense, this was an esports conclave, although the tournament was not billed as esports, and was a four-wall event in which Harrah’s played no role, other than to rent the room. Harrah’s benefited in multiple ways, in multiple cash registers, from hotel revenue (many of the participants had traveled 50 or miles to play) to food-and-beverage, to slot revenue (American mahjong players tend to prefer slots, based on our observation). When we meet with our client base, we lay down certain rules of the road: • Rule 1: Leave your present conception of esports at the door. • Rule 2: ESports can serve multiple functions, including serving as a marketing tool that relies on a rifle-like approach, rather than a shotgun approach. In other words, offerings can be tweaked to target groups ranging from the oft-cited millennials to their grandparents, and to every group in between. • Rule 3: Be creative in your approach, and think outside the proverbial box (in other words, when in doubt, see Rule 1 above). • Rule 4: Do something. The world is changing, and the traditional gaming industry must change with it. It is easy and simple to stick with existing formulas. That is the working model that served so many leading companies for so many years, from Kodak and Xerox to Sears and K-Mart. The gaming industry is taking an increasingly closer look at eSports, and they are correctly shocked at some of the findings. At Spectrum ESports Advisors, we support the notion put forth recently by Goldman Sachs, which wrote: “ESports viewership is already outpacing some major league sport audiences.” The report notes, for example, that 2017 viewership of the League of Legends championships outpaced viewership of the World Series, NBA finals and the Stanley Cup Finals. Quite notably, League of Legends viewership outpaced the Stanley Cup viewership by a margin of more than 5-1.Branded tournaments such as League of Legends, which attract a younger demographic, are desirable and need to be critical arrows in the quivers of every gaming operator seeking to participate in esports. But if targeting millennials is your sole goal, you will be violating Rule 5: Don’t assume that the games millennials play today will be the games that millennials will play in 2024, 2030 and beyond. All of this brings us to Rule 6: Follow the conventional wisdom at your own peril. Experience dictates that the conventional wisdom in gaming has been wrong more often that it has been right. If every casino operator had followed conventional wisdom, table games (particularly craps) would have been dismantled years ago, and sold for firewood. The smarter players in esports will be those who have the flexibility and the imagination to broaden their offerings and sharpen their marketing efforts to adapt to changing times, and to target different demographics. Esports and gaming will evolve in coming years (a topic we will address further in coming analyses) but suffice it to say that the evolution will encompass esports: • As an amenity (think mahjong or boxing) • As a player-vs-player activity (think poker) • As a pari-mutuel activity (think of traditional pari-mutuel sports) • As a straight betting proposition (think of sports betting) This evolution will neither be easy, and pitfalls will emerge. That is inevitable. It is also inevitable, however, that the future of esports belongs to those with the gumption to defy conventional practices. We are not advocating mahjong as the next frontier in esports. Rather, we are advocating a new way of looking at the world to uncover multiple frontiers, targeting multiple demographic groups with multiple offerings. With that in mind, the final question in this tournament is: What does the “e” in esports stand for? In our mind, it stands for “everything.”Michael Pollock is Principal, Spectrum eSports Advisors, a strategic alliance between Spectrum Gaming Sports Group and Millennial Esports’ Executive Chairman Alex Igelman, established to provide guidance, advisory, and oversight service to policymakers, gaming operators and others who seek to engage in esports. Demystifying affordability part two: An automated and layered approach

first_imgAutomated, non-intrusive affordability checks conducted at this initial stage can be used by operators as a first screening tool to gauge an individual’s affordability and then, where necessary, escalate to more invasive manual checks where they are needed most. Email Address Demystifying affordability part two: An automated and layered approach With operators now being required to consider customer affordability earlier in the customer journey, it’s important to ensure that any interactions, such as setting limits, are applied as close to instantly as possible. This is to ensure operators both fulfill the requirements of the Commission – to implement real-time protection through auto-measures – but also ensure frictionless onboarding for the customer.  Interactions based on affordability The importance of automating affordability processes To bring this to life, beBettor provides operators with discretionary income estimates for each customer.  If a customer was estimated to be able to afford to spend £500 on gambling per month, operators could set an initial net deposit limit for that customer at that amount. In its guidance for remote operators during Covid-19, released in May 2020, the Gambling Commission reiterated its customer interaction process for operators to follow: ‘Identify, Interact and Evaluate’ Sonny COtt | by www.andynewbold.com The Commission, in its remote customer Interaction consultation, outlined that while operators have the capability to identify customers who may be harmed by gambling, evidence showed that often they are too slow to act and do so at a level which does not reflect the level of potential harm at stake. Therefore, it’s important for operators to have an affordability framework that includes both initial and enhanced affordability assessments, to protect both the mass market customer and those who wish to spend more. 27th April 2021 | By Daniel O’Boyle Affordability Thresholds The benefits to be gained with automated checks are not only meeting the regulator’s expectation, but also in efficiency. If implemented correctly, not only can this ensure compliance, but it can also reduce painstaking hours of manual due diligence and customer interactions. If that customer then wanted to increase that limit, an operator could then conduct further checks to ensure they could afford a higher level of spend without experiencing harm. In the same way customer interaction frameworks are required to escalate the strength of interaction where deemed necessary, operators should take a risk-based approach and escalate the level of affordability assessment at different stages in the customer journey. As such, some operators are already including affordability at the earliest stages of the customer relationship, during the customer onboarding process with initial non-intrusive affordability checks on registration or first deposit.  “Operators should certainly be gathering data throughout the life of the customer relationship, starting from the point of registration which should be able to assist with a consideration of whether a customer is gambling within their means,” it said. Non-intrusive checks designed for assessing affordability at the beginning of the customer journey can be conducted seamlessly in the background, but more invasive checks requiring more sensitive financial information may be conducted later on in the customer journey or when the customer wants to increase their level of spend. Resource efficiency  A layered approach Regions: UK & Ireland For those matching derogatory data registers, such as those listed as insolvent, stronger interactions may be conducted earlier in the journey. But even for other customers, an affordability estimate can act as a measure which triggers automated interactions. Instant checks These non-intrusive affordability checks are best suited to screen an operator’s customer base and identify those who may experience gambling-related harm, as they can be conducted in the background, without friction or disruption to the customer. First, operators should identify customers who may be at risk of experiencing harms that are associated with gambling. Then they should interact with customers in a way which minimises the risk of customers experiencing harms. From that point, it is then for the operator to understand the impact of the interaction on the customer and the effectiveness of the operator’s actions and approach.  Enhanced assessments could be through further open source data checks like search engines or social media).  Many checks that were conducted relied solely on manual actions, with interactions occurring hours or days after required, potentially seen as too late as the customer may already be experiencing gambling related harm. An important part of this process is to integrate suitable auto-measures into the responsible gaming framework to identify early on those who may be vulnerable to experiencing gambling related harm. Affordability is an integral part of that early screening, and so operators need robust automated affordability controls. AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter As well as assisting operators in meeting the required regulatory standards, and ensuring player protection is tailored to the individual, a layered approach to affordability is also resource-efficient for operators. Enhanced affordability assessments  The stage at which a check is conducted, and ultimately the risk posed to the customer, will determine the invasiveness of the check. Early-stage affordability assessments also inform where further, more invasive, costly and time consuming checks are required. This means operators are able to allocate more resources to customers who need them most, as opposed to applying costly and invasive checks to all their customers. A recent report, commissioned by GambleAware to investigate online patterns of play, found that the majority of revenue for remote gambling operators came from the highest spending 5% of accounts.  Proposed changes could see the regulator prescribe set thresholds for operators to conduct affordability checks with a threshold conceivably set as low as £100. An enhanced experience In the context of affordability, the Gambling Commission suggested thresholds for customer interactions have been set too high and at unrealistic levels (the Gambling Commission advises any affordability thresholds set above £2,000 are inappropriate). By automating this process operators will also be able to create a clear audit trail which can be used to explain the treatment of customers to the regulator. Topics: Legal & compliance Social responsibility Tech & innovation Uncategorized Regulation Regtech It’s important for operators to now consider affordability early in the customer journey: not only to meet the requirements of the GC, but also to create a more personalised experience for the customer. Considering affordability earlier in the journey enriches the data that you have on that customer, allowing for interactions that are suitable for the individual as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach. This can result in the customer at times being unwilling to provide this information and instead choosing to take their custom elsewhere, thus not addressing the problem but spreading their problem gambling among multiple operators or worse, to the black market where protections are lacking. However, the GC goes further than that:  These interactions come in various forms, including safer gambling messaging, “reality checks” showing how much money has been lost, or in the form of limits. In the remote customer interaction consultation, the Gambling Commission refers to operators applying a ‘handbrake’ or ‘hard stop’ at a certain threshold to prevent gambling beyond a point until it has been proven a customer can safely gamble beyond this limit. Regtech Alternatively, it could be through information collected directly from the customer; such as through income and expenses questionnaires; or, verified Source of Funds or Source of Wealth documentation like bank statements or payslips. However, while this may be a more accurate level of assessment, this comes at the cost of being invasive of customer privacy, inconvenient to the customer and requiring the sharing of potentially sensitive financial data.  For if these checks were conducted manually and couldn’t be delivered in real time, it could cause unnecessary inconvenience to the player at this early stage. Once both the affordability checks and customer interactions have been conducted, it’s important for operators to record how they’ve interacted with customers. Automating early stage affordability assessments means operators will be able to relieve pressure on compliance teams, avoiding undertaking lengthy manual checks for high volumes of customers.  With information from the initial affordability assessment, operators can identify those who require additional and more enhanced checks. This can occur when a customer breaches an initial spending limit or if they display other indicators of harm.  As these checks are based primarily on open data, customers aren’t required to hand over highly sensitive financial information like bank statements or p60s. The first article of the ‘Demystifying Affordability’ series set the context for affordability in Great Britain.
