William Hill upbeat on full year

Karamba ‘dismayed’ over ad error

first_img26th July 2018 | By contenteditor Topics: Casino & games Legal & compliance Marketing & affiliates Strategy Slots Tags: Online Gambling Slot Machines Karamba has pledged to tighten up its marketing procedures after the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) banned an advert published on its website.Promoting the ‘Starburst’ slot game on Karamba.com, a platform operated by Aspire Global, the advert was entitled ‘Tips and tricks on how to win at Starburst’ and set out a so-called ‘Starburst Strategy’.AG Communications, which operates as Karamba.com, said the offending pages were uploaded to the website in error and had not gone through the standard internal procedure to ensure they complied with regulations.Although AG said the web pages in question attracted low levels of user traffic, it has taken the ads down from Karamba.com and opened a full internal review to address the issue. In a statement released to iGamingBusiness.com, Karamba said it was “dismayed” to learn that the advert was published as a result of human error and added that the Karamba brand has a “strong focus” on regulation compliance.“Karamba is a brand that operates under six different regulations with a strong focus on complying with the different regulatory guidelines and standards,” Karamba said.“We were dismayed to learn that these ads were uploaded due to human error, insomuch that they did not go through our internal procedure for approval of marketing materials.“Following this issue, of which there will not be a reoccurrence, we have tightened our procedures as well as undertaken additional measures to ensure all new marketing materials are fully compliant with the regulatory standards.”A single complainant challenged the advert for being “socially irresponsible” as it “misleadingly implied” that certain strategies could lead to profit gain. The complainant also said such strategies “encouraged gambling behaviour that could lead to financial, social or emotional harm”.The advert featured a series of suggestions as to how to play the game in order to win, setting out how “wins at the minimum bet rate are much less frequent and pay out significantly smaller sums”.Other wording in the ad included “changing the cycle of the game to get back on the winning track by toggling the spin and max bet buttons. The bet rate will stay the same, but you may trigger more bonus features and, most importantly, wins”.In its ruling, the ASA said the advert must not appear again in its current form. The regulatory body has also spoken to Karamba to ensure future marketing communications contain nothing that is “likely to encourage irresponsible gambling behaviour that could lead to financial, social or emotional harm”.The ASA’s sanction comes after the regulator told iGamingBusiness.com earlier this month that it is examining whether World Cup adverts by Bet365 and William Hill contravened new gambling guidelines. California labor condemns police murder of George Floyd

first_imgThis is big. Seemingly out of nowhere, the “silent majority” of the working class took to the streets in towns and cities across the land — in a time of COVID-19 lockdowns and state-ordered disruption of normal human interactions — to condemn the police lynching of George Floyd in Minneapolis.International Longshore Workers Union leaders traveled from California to Houston to attend George Floyd’s memorial service, June 8.Organized labor didn’t lead it, but it did join in this historic, largely spontaneous movement against police impunity and the entrenched system of white supremacy that lies behind it.Longshore unions plan to shut down West, East and Gulf Coast ports on June 9 — stopping work for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the duration of Floyd’s streetside, slow-motion execution at the hands of Minneapolis police.“We’re living in a recurring nightmare in America,” said the California Labor Federation in a June 4 statement. “Over the past few weeks we’ve seen the senseless killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, David McAtee, Tony McDade and George Floyd. And for centuries, our brothers and sisters have been murdered for no other reason than the color of their skin.“Every time a Black person is brutalized by the police, individuals and organizations condemn it. When racism leads to a modern-day lynching, we express shock. But these scenes repeat, over and over. We’re on a vicious loop that ignores the desperate need for change and cements the systemic racism that’s plagued our nation since its founding.”The California labor statement called for ending the school-to-prison pipeline by creating decent jobs and “zero tolerance of police officers who commit any acts of violence against our communities.” “A once-in-a-generation call to action”On the same day, four Bay Area central labor councils, representing half a million working families, issued a joint statement entitled, “Unions must help lead the fight for racial justice.” The statement asked, “What type of society do we want for our grandchildren? Do we want more schoolhouses or more jails? More teachers or more police?“This is a once-in-a-generation call to action. The fight for racial justice is our fight.”It’s no secret that the mainstream of organized labor has been slow to act against white supremacy and police violence. You could say this has been an “Achilles heel” of the unions — an obstacle to uniting with the great mass of unorganized workers, the gig workers, the migrants and farmworkers, including members of oppressed nations and nationalities within the borders of the United States. We’re talking about uniting the most numerous and essential class of all, the working class, without whom no commodity would be produced and no service would be performed. One thing the murders of George Floyd and the others have illuminated for all to see is, first of all, how brutal and corrupt is the system of the exploiters and oppressors and, second of all, how quickly and powerfully the many sectors of the working class can spring into united action to confront them.Welsh is a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and a current delegate to the San Francisco Labor Council.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Immediately and unconditionally end the legal proceedings against Azerbaijani lawyer Intigam Aliyev

first_img News July 26, 2012 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Immediately and unconditionally end the legal proceedings against Azerbaijani lawyer Intigam Aliyev “We’ll hold Ilham Aliyev personally responsible if anything happens to this blogger in France” RSF says To President Abdullah GulRepublic of Turkey AzerbaijanEurope – Central Asia Receive email alerts 25 July 2012Immediately and unconditionally end the legal proceedings against Azerbaijani lawyer Intigam Aliyev Mr. President,The undersigned members and partners of the Human Rights House Network and the SouthCaucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders call upon you to ensure that all charges against Azerbaijani human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev are immediately and unconditionally droppedand compensation for the acts of ill-treatment he suffered in Ataturk Airport provided. On 6 December 2011, on his way back to Baku, Azerbaijan, from Vilnius, Lithuania, where he took partin the Civil Society Parallel Event organised by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Intigam Aliyev was at the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, to catch a connecting flight to Baku. After an altercation with a customs officer, Intigam Aliyev’s ticket was invalidated by theofficer, Huseyin Kunt, and he was detained and kept in closed room for about four hours. During his detention, he was insulted and intimidated by police officers. Intigam Aliyev immediately informed the Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) that he was being held in detention at the Ataturk airport. The Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly in Istanbul sent lawyers toassist Intigam Aliyev at the airport late that night. The Istanbul Bar Association was also involved in this case. Several international organizations sent appeals and called on the Turkish authorities torelease him.On 7 December 2011 at 12:00, Intigam Aliyev was told that he would be deported from Turkey at 20:30 the same day. That same day, whilst held in custody, Intigam Aliyev was beaten and injured by immigration officers, and repeatedly threatened not to speak out. He was beaten in a small room by Alaittin Sarıkaya, one oftwo civilian immigration officers who accompanied Intigam Aliyev, after he requested his passport tobe returned to him. Servet Erkaraca, the other immigration officer, witnessed the beating andthreatened Aliyev. When Intigam Aliyev asked them to be polite, he was taken to the police officewhere he was beaten on his head and body by the same officer, Alittin Sarikaya, in the presence of seven other civilian policemen and Servet Erkaraca. Despite the lawyers’ insistence before Aliyev’s deportation, he was not provided with any documentsor a detailed explanation related to his deportation or his arrest. He was not allowed to meet hislawyers on 7 December 2011. Intigam Aliyev was sent back to Baku on 7 December 2011, where heunderwent a medical examination. On 16 December 2011, Intigam Aliyev’s lawyers filed a complaint with the Turkish Prosecutor’s Office about the deportation and beatings. They requested the provision of CCTV footage from the airport on 6-7 December 2011. The complaint was rejected due to “lack of evidence.”In early July 2012, Intigam Aliyev was called to the Nasimi District Court and the Yasamal District Court of the Republic of Azerbaijan, where he was informed about the order of the Bakirkoy Sulh Court and Bakirkoy Asliye Court of the Republic of Turkey, stating that criminal charges were brought against him by the Prosecutor’s Office of Bakirkoy for obstructing the officer from performing his duties (art. 265.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Turkey), insult (art. 106.1), and threats (art.125.3a) on the basis of the complaints of immigration officers Servet Erkaraca, and Alaittin Sarikaya, and police officer Huseyin Kunt.It later became known that the criminal case had been opened against Intigam Aliyev on 6 December 2011 when he was detained at the Istanbul Airport. He and his lawyers in Turkey had not been informed about it and did not receive any written information about these charges until 6 July 2012.Intigam Aliyev is a well-known human rights lawyer, both in Azerbaijan and internationally. He hasbrought over 200 cases of his clients, including prominent journalists, to the European Court of HumanRights. As the Head of the Legal Education Society, he is an active and reliable partner for all memberand partner NGOs of the Human Rights House Network and the South Caucasus Network of HumanRights Defenders. He is also a member of the Civil Platform of the Eastern Partnership. As a victim of violence and arbitrary detention by security forces at the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, Intigam Aliyev should be protected by the State. We therefore call upon the authorities of the Republic of Turkey to:  Immediately and unconditionally drop all criminal charges against human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev;  Fully compensate Intigam Aliyev for the ill-treatment he suffered at the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul and for the moral and financial damages;  Undertake an independent investigation into the accusations of ill-treatment against Intigam Aliyev, and bring those responsible to justice. According to HUD, the aim of the campaign will be to increase the Department’s efforts to educate the public about what behaviors constitute sexual harassment and what to do and who to contact if they experience it where they live. In a statement, HUD says that the campaign is designed to “help protect people from harassment by landlords, property managers, and maintenance workers in HUD-assisted housing.”“April is Fair Housing Month, a time when we celebrate the Fair Housing Act and recommit ourselves to ensuring every American has access to housing that is free from discrimination,” said HUD in a statement. “The Fair Housing Act makes it unlawful to discriminate in housing transactions based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, or family status. This year, HUD is especially focused on protecting the right of individuals to feel safe and secure in their homes, free from sexual harassment or unwanted sexual advances.”Want to learn more about diversity in your business? Two boys charged for allegedly throwing rock from side of road, seriously hurting driver

first_img(Boone County Sheriff) The Boone County Sheriff’s Office released images of this rock that authorities say two teenage boys threw at a Kentucky roadway, seriously injuring a driver. (BURLINGTON, Ky.) — Two teenage boys were arrested and accused of throwing a rock from the side of a Kentucky roadway, seriously injuring a driver, authorities said.William Wehner, 64, was driving on KY-237 in Burlington on Saturday night when a large rock was thrown through his windshield, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.Wehner was seriously injured but was able to pull off the road, the sheriff’s office said. The rock “got him on the right side of his face, just missed his eye,” the victim’s brother, Randy Wehner, told ABC Cincinnati affiliate WCPO. “If it was just a few inches higher, it could have been a whole lot worse.”William Wehner was treated for facial injuries at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the sheriff’s office said. The two boys, ages 14 and 15, are accused of two rock throwing incidents that night, including the one that hurt Wehner, authorities said. The 14-year-old was charged with first-degree assault and second-degree criminal mischief and the 15-year-old was charged with first-degree complicity to assault and second-degree criminal mischief, authorities said. The boys, who both live in Burlington, were taken to the Campbell Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Newport, Kentucky, the sheriff’s office said. The driver will need reconstructive surgery, which “speaks to the degree of danger involved in these pranks,” Maj. UK proptech “isn’t that innovative” says leading consultant

first_imgLeading proptech consultant Eddie Holmes (pictured, below) has told The Negotiator he believes the UK’s proptech sector “isn’t really innovative”, despite the mini-industry often touting itself as a world-beating centre of new ideas and pioneering tech, and containing 10% of the worlds’ proptech firms.“There’s no question that it is a hotbed of activity but whether that activity is innovative or not is a different question,” he said. “Our UK resi market isn’t really innovative, nothing truly game changing by and large.”His comments came as he and his colleague James Dearsley from leading industry consultancy Proptech Consult rubbed shoulders at a global gathering of tech firms from the residential and commercial sectors in Paris organised by MIPIM.Finishing yesterday after an exhausting three days of partying and networking events organised by MIPIM, it transpires only a handful of UK proptech and property figures were at the event including Sammy Pahal (pictured main pic, presenting), MD of the UK PropTech Association, Chris Grigg, CEO of British Land and Michael Ewert from JLL, all of whom also spoke at the jamboree.Dearsley and Holmes also spoke at the conference after revealing their research into the European property industry, which revealed that a third of management within property companies across Europe are clueless about tech and how to use it.DisruptionOf the 100 industry professional the duo interviewed, 82% said technology was due to disrupt their business soon.“The property market appears to be one of the last industries to go through a digital transformation, and it appears from this research that we still have some way to go,” says James Dearsley (pictured, left)This, he says, is despite half of all the executives he interviewed saying their business models will be rendered irrelevant by technology over the next five years.“The results of this survey give a fascinating insight into the ways in which technology is disrupting the property industry,” MIPIM Protech Europe organise Filippo Rean.Read more about proptech. James Dearsley proptech mipim paris proptech consult Sammy Pahal Eddie Holmes June 22, 2018Nigel LewisWhat’s your opinion? September 15, 2004 Letters

first_imgSeptember 15, 2004 Letters Letters Hurricane Charley Thank you to the Columbian-American Bar Association, Cuban American Bar Association, Puerto Rican Bar Association of Florida, and Professional Translating Services, Inc., of Miami, for assisting The Florida Bar with a Spanish version of the Web page listing resources for victims of Hurricane Charley. Francine Andía Walker Director of Public Information and Bar Services, The Florida Bar Lawyer Advertising I would disagree with Advertising Task Force 2004 member Hal Lewis who recently said he is under the impression that criminal defendants “have been told they need a lawyer, so why do they need a letter” during a debate on whether to extend the 30-day ban on direct mail solicitation to criminal cases, as reported the August 15 issue of the News. Who tells them? The police? Don’t bet on it. One should not assume that Miranda warnings are read in each and every case, because they are not.Personal injury cases are not similar to criminal cases, in any aspect. In criminal cases the defendant has an immediate problem that may result in their incarceration for perhaps months or years. No such issue exists in a personal injury case. Immediate action is called for in a criminal case. There are potential witnesses, who may be reluctant, who might disappear. These witnesses should be interviewed as soon as possible. In the all-too-common DUI case, a driver has 10 days from the date of arrest to file a request for a hearing to contest an administrative suspension. I constantly speak to individuals who are arrested for DUI, and were not told by the police that they have 10 days to file such a request. Additionally I have found that drivers are told, incorrectly, by the arresting officer, that the DUI citation is their driving permit for 30 days. This is, of course, incorrect. They should have a lawyer file the hearing request for them, because there is more involved than just the filing. No, individuals who are arrested need immediate help. Maybe the Advertising Task Force ought to concentrate on billboard ads, and not what an individual receives and reads in the privacy of his own home. Timothy Foster Jupiter Gay Adoptions I am most disturbed by the letters to the editor appearing in the August 15 News, bashing gay and lesbian adoption, and the decision of the Family Law Section Executive Council to support adoptions by gay and lesbian persons. The opinions expressed evidence the bigotry toward gay and lesbian persons that continues to pervade our profession and our state. It is simply astounding, in this age of enlightenment, that such intolerance continues to exist within the greater “brotherhood” of Florida lawyers. It is apparent from these letters, however, that there is no “brotherhood” at all. Phrases, such as “the normal, usual definition of parents,” “going in favor of gay adoption certainly does not improve the lawyer image,” “potentially damaging to Florida’s children,” and “children who will suffer the consequences of being raised by gay parents,” are terrifically judgmental and, frankly, downright shameful. These words do absolutely nothing to enhance or elevate our profession — from within or without. Thankfully, none of these persons are members of the Family Law Section Executive Council.I wholeheartedly support the decision of the Family Law Section. Bravo. Legislative bigotry of any kind is intolerable in modern society. The greater good of all mankind is served by equality, tolerance, and respect. And that includes the right of gays and lesbians to adopt in this state. Michael T. Sheridan OrlandoI was disappointed to read recent letters in the News opposing the Family Law Section’s vote to support gay adoptions. Contrary to the opinions expressed in those letters, adoption by gay and lesbian individuals is an issue of vital importance to the 3,500-plus children languishing in Florida’s foster care system, waiting to be adopted. The Family Law Section has merely joined the ranks of enlightened and unbiased professional groups, including the nation’s oldest, largest, and most respected children’s groups who strongly oppose Florida’s ban on gay adoption: the Child Welfare League, and the North American Council on Adoptable Children. No mainstream health or child welfare group supports broadly restricting gay parenting and in fact these groups actively oppose such restrictions. The American Pediatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the NASW, and the American Psychiatric Association have issued policy statements uniformly supporting adoption by gay parents. As for the assertion that a bar association should not express an opinion on controversial issues, in fact, the ABA routinely does just that, and as I recall made national news in their support of gay marriage less than two years ago.As the Family Law Section has asserted, gay and lesbian adoption is a child care issue, not a gay rights issue. Consider these statistics: The median age of kids in foster care waiting to be adopted is 7.8 years and most of these children have endured at least three different foster care placements in this period of time. Many of these children will leave the foster care system, not because they find permanent homes, but because they reach their 18th birthday.Social science experts who have studied over 1,000 children and 500 gay and lesbian parents solidly refute the idea that gay parents and their children are not as healthy and happy as other families. Not a single respected study has found that gay parents are bad parents or that their sexual orientation harms the children they raise. Child welfare professionals consider adoption to be in the best interests of the children whose parents cannot or will not provide proper care for them.A review of 20 years of literature found that the prevalence of psychopathology among children in foster care is higher than the norm, even when compared with children who have similar backgrounds of deprivation. Within two to four years of leaving foster care only 54 percent of children had completed high school; over half were unemployed; 25 percent had been homeless; and 42 percent had given birth to or fathered a child.Given the inarguable need for adoptive parents for the thousands of children who may never find the parents they so desperately need and want, one would hope that the state would do everything in its power to find homes for the children languishing in its foster care system. In fact, the child welfare system is required to expend a great deal of time and energy expanding the pool of eligible adoptive parents, so that it even provides financial subsidies to prospective families who would otherwise be unable to adopt. Yet, question II-G on the form prospective parents are required to fill out in Florida requires all applicants to check “yes” or “no” to the statement: “I am a homosexual.” Next to the question is a quote from F.S. §63.042(3) of the state law: “No person eligible to adopt under this statute may adopt if that person is a homosexual.”When one studies the history of adoption in the U.S., it is understandable that there should be some debate, given the fact that as recently as 1970, single people who applied to adopt were routinely turned down, and, in fact, some states had laws barring adoption by single people. As the 1970s progressed, 4 percent of parents adopting were single; in the 1980s the percentage increased to 34 percent, and in 2000, fully one third, 33 percent, of the children adopted from foster care were by single parents. We have seen a relatively rapid change over the last 30 years, from the right to adopt almost exclusively reserved to married couples in 1970, to today where children are commonly placed in families that fall outside the traditional model of a married mother and father.Florida has a long history of morally disapproving of those who become intimate with members of other races, and of heterosexuals who become sexually intimate without marriage. As recently as 1964 Florida made fornication between interracial couples a felony instead of the misdemeanor crime it was when committed by couples of the same race.Seen in this historical context, it is not surprising that we still have resistence to the idea of adoption by gay parents. The law’s history reveals that it was a direct expression of disapproval of gays in general. Florida’s ban on gay adoption was only enacted in 1977 following the campaign led by an ex-beauty queen and songstress, which resulted in the repeal of Miami-Dade County’s first ordinance protecting gays from discrimination.Twenty-five years later, over a dozen of the state legislators who voted in favor of the gay adoption ban in 1977 have signed affidavits stating that they were wrong and now support efforts to overturn or repeal the law. I applaud the Family Law Section’s position in favor of gay adoptions, and look forward to the day that the legislature’s lamentable position banning gay adoption is repealed. I expect that the majority of my colleagues in The Florida Bar will agree with my position. Robin L. Bodiford Ft. LauderdaleClearly, The Florida Bar is negligent in allowing the gay adoption tar baby to reach its present proportions. The Bar has pussyfooted to the point that the tail (Family Law Section) is now wagging the dog (The Florida Bar) and it is time to take the bull by the horns.Past time, in fact, considering that the TV networks, radio, BBC News, and other media highlight this fiasco with frequency.A simple solution is readily available to rectify the Bar’s indolence – poll the membership by mail. (No specious protesting about cost, please; that’s why we pay dues.) Publish the results and promptly enact such measures as will implement the voted wishes of the membership.Isn’t that your duty? George Baker Thomson GulfportI was surprised to see so many letters in the News opposing “gay adoptions.” What the Florida Bar Family Law Section did was support the right of children to be adopted by persons who happen to be gay.Florida is the only state that, by statute, prevents all persons who happen to be gay or lesbian from adopting. The statute is a relic from the Anita Bryant days. It makes our state look like a laughing stock at best, and a haven for discrimination at worst. The Family Law Section did do a poll of members a few years ago and a good majority of practitioners supported lifting the ban. The people working in the area know that discrimination is wrong and harms society as a whole. The Bar should take a position on this issue. Michael E. Morris Orlando SCOPE I want to pass along my deep appreciation to theYoung Lawyers Division for making its SCOPE program available to Florida lawyers. As a sole practitioner, comparatively new to the practice of law in Florida, I have used the program several times, and the lawyers to whom I am referred are generous with their time, and thorough with their information and guidance. To a person they have returned my calls and given me the opportunity to call back if I need further clarification on a point.A special kudo to Wallace Anderson, who not only apprised me of the special guardianship proceeding known as Guardian Advocate, but sent me a computer disk with all the pleadings for the proceeding. This will enable me to serve my clients more effectively and at less cost to them for legal services.SCOPE is a very valuable service, especially to solo practitioners, and all those involved in this program should know that there is one attorney out there who couldn’t practice as effectively as she does without it. Novavax ties up with SK bioscience to boost supply of potential COVID-19 vaccine

first_imgAs part of that deal, Novavax has committed to supply its vaccine to COVAX, a scheme that aims to provide equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines across the globe. The deal with SK bioscience would help it increase the supply to meet those commitments, Novavax said.SK bioscience will start producing the antigen at its vaccine plant in South Korea this month, the two companies said, adding that they had also signed a letter of intent with the country’s Ministry of Health and Welfare to make the vaccine available for its people.Novavax is also gearing up to deliver 100 million doses to the United States by January after it was awarded $1.6 billion to cover testing and manufacturing of its potential vaccine in the country. In an early-stage trial, Novavax’s vaccine candidate, NVX-CoV2373, produced higher levels of antibodies in healthy volunteers after two doses than those found in recovered COVID-19 patients and the vaccine was “well tolerated” overall. The vaccine uses a technology known as recombinant nanoparticle to produce antigens – molecules that are designed to spur the immune system into action. Novavax Inc said on Thursday South Korea’s SK bioscience would manufacture a component of the US drug developer’s experimental coronavirus vaccine in a bid to boost its supply.Shares of Maryland-based Novavax rose nearly 7% in morning trade.Novavax has received $2 billion in funding so far for its coronavirus vaccine, including $384 million from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Gov. Wolf: Masks are Mandatory in Pennsylvania Businesses

first_imgGov. Wolf: Masks are Mandatory in Pennsylvania Businesses SHARE Email Facebook Twitter June 26, 2020center_img Economy,  Press Release,  Public Health Governor Tom Wolf today reminded all Pennsylvania residents and businesses that masks are mandatory when visiting a business.“The importance of mask-wearing to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect people and businesses cannot be overstated,” Gov. Wolf said. “Masks are required in businesses, for the entire time someone is visiting a business. It’s that simple and that important to continue to safely reopen the state and keep our case counts on the decline.”Multiple state government agencies sent a communication to Pennsylvania businesses this week outlining mask requirements:Everyone must wear a mask, unless they have a medical reason not to or are under the age of 2. That includes workers and customers. Remember, my mask protects you and your mask protects me.No mask, no shirt, no shoes, no service. If a worker or customer attempts to enter your business without a mask on, ask them to leave and return when they have a mask. A fabric mask is fine.Find PPE to protect your workers. Masks and other PPE can be hard to find given the high demand. But we’ve got you covered. Check out our online directory of PPE manufacturers and suppliers in Pennsylvania.Have good mask hygiene. Don’t touch the front of your mask. Make sure it covers both your nose and mouth. Don’t lift it up when talking to someone. Remember, the virus travels in the droplets we breath out when talking or laughing, not just when we cough or sneeze. If wearing a fabric mask, make sure you wash it and let it fully dry between uses.“Wearing masks in a business or when in a public space where social distancing can’t be maintained is a required, vital practice to stopping the spread of COVID-19,” Gov. Wolf said. “It’s also a sign of respect for others because your mask is protecting them. Let’s continue to get through this together.”The state’s business guidance outlines mask-wearing requirements. The state’s restaurant industry guidance outlines mask-wearing requirements specific to restaurants.Ver esta página en español.last_img read more

Dutch pension fund SC Johnson to join insurer after liquidation

first_imgFred Eindhoven, the scheme’s chairman, said the pension fund intended to transfer its pension plans to an insurer. In 2006, the pension fund paid Aegon a lump sum for the liabilities of all pensioners and deferred participants, with the insurer annually adding the net surplus returns of more than 4%, according to the scheme’s annual report. At the same time, the pension fund placed pensions accrual for its workers in a defined contribution plan with Zwitserleven. The contract, which expires at year-end, provides for at least a pension-asset growth of 3%.In its newsletter, the scheme’s board explained that the Zwitserleven contract offered hardly any chance of surplus returns or indexation, following the insurer’s decision in 2011 to fully re-allocate its investments to low-risk assets.“As a result of low interest rates, annuities at retirement will be much lower than in the past,” warned Eindhoven. He pointed out that the results of the Aegon scheme were much better, and even had the potential of inflation compensation.Last year, however, the pension fund had to come to a compromise with Aegon, which wanted to reduce the tariffs for future indexation unilaterally, according to the chairman. The Pensioenfonds SC Johnson has 940 participants and pensioners. The €112m Dutch pension fund of SC Johnson has announced it will liquidate itself over the course of next year, when it intends to transfer its two pension plans to an insurer. In its newsletter, the pension fund for the manufacturer of household cleaning products said it postponed its initial plan to liquidate on 1 January, as its sponsor asked for more time to assess the consequences of the decision. The pension fund said the players involved wanted full clarity about each of their roles, to achieve maximum support when the scheme is no longer implementing its fully re-insured pension plans with Aegon and Zwitserleven, respectively. It added that the employer would pay any surplus costs caused by the delay.last_img read more

Dutch recreation scheme seeks growth through voluntary additions

first_imgThe €660m mandatory pension fund for the recreation sector (Recreatie) said it would seek growth through taking in recreation companies that aren’t not subject to mandatory participation.Eiko de Vries, the scheme’s chairman, said that his pension fund could be of interest to the approximately 1,300 businesses that were currently exempt from a mandatory affiliation.De Vries: “The sector is still expanding. We see amusement and safari parks invest in residential recreation in particular to keep visitors for longer, while, on the other hand, combinations of swimming pools, sport centres and amusement arcades are being set up.“As a consequence, part of the staff is sometimes subject to our mandatory pension plan. To an employer, it would be much more practical if all workers were served by the same pensions provider.” As examples, he cited large amusement parks and wellness centres. “Sometimes, if a park also rents out holiday homes, part of their staff are already participants in the pension fund.”In these cases, the scheme could also start offering defined contribution (DC) or collective DC arrangements, in addition to its current defined benefit plan, De Vries explained. At the moment, Pensioenfonds Recreatie has 1,280 affilated employers. As its 18,500-strong membership is relatively young, it receives €40m of contributions annually. The chairman explained that the scheme’s expansion plan was triggered by the fact that it had to negotiate with two different employer organisations, which had produced two different collective labour agreements (CAOs).“This had made us aware that the social partners of workers and employers also had the option of seeking another pensions provider,” De Vries said.Co-operation or a merger with another industry-wide scheme was not an option acceptable for the social partners: they insisted on continuing their own pension fund, seeing sufficient growth potential to keep it viable. The chairman of Recreatie pointed out that the scheme’s growth plan required an active approach of employers, “with resolute and less viscous decision-making”.He stressed that expansion would also benefit current participants, as it could decrease costs, improve the service level and would be good for continuity as well.In his opinion, the plan was not at odds with the policy of the outgoing government aimed at preventing mandatory sector schemes further expanding their domain of influence.“There is sufficient coherence between our mandatory industry-wide pension fund and the companies that join voluntarily,” he argued.last_img read more

Angry Man U fans attack Ed Woodward’s mansion

first_imgRelatedPosts Ighalo: My best moment as ‘Red Devil’ EPL: Crystal Palace stun sloppy Man U EPL: Red Devils attack Palace A mob of furious Manchester United fans attacked the home of Ed Woodward on Tuesday night, as anger towards the club’s executive vice-chairman took a sinister turn. In appalling scenes that drew condemnation from United, shocking footage emerged of a gang of around 20 hooded supporters throwing flares and a smoke bomb at Woodward’s £2 million Cheshire mansion. Some of the group are believed to be members of United’s notorious “Men In Black”. The incident is believed to have happened around 8pm on Tuesday night. Woodward and his wife, Isabelle, and their young twins were not at home at the time. Greater Manchester Police are investigating. United issued a strongly worded statement in which they condemned the behaviour and said they would work in conjunction with the police to identify the culprits. As well as potential prosecution, anyone found responsible would be banned for life by the club. “Manchester United Football Club have tonight been made aware of the incident outside the home of one of our employees,” the club statement read. “We know that the football world will unite behind us as we work with Greater Manchester Police to identify the perpetrators of this unwarranted attack. Anybody found guilty of a criminal offence, or found to be trespassing on this property, will be banned for life by the club and may face prosecution. “Fans expressing opinion is one thing, criminal damage and intent to endanger life is another. There is simply no excuse for this.” Woodward and the Glazer family, United’s maligned owners, have been the target of sustained abuse from supporters at games in recent weeks over their running of the club. But that verbal abuse – which has included a series of foul mouthed chants and threats to kill Woodward and the Glazers – took a more violent, threatening turn. The gang congregated outside Woodward’s house in a quiet village near Knutsford and rang an intercom on the large gates at the entrance of the property. When no one answered, the thugs graffitied the property by spraying red paint before launching smoke bombs into the grounds and throwing a series of flares. It remains to be seen if United react by beefing up Woodward’s security on match days and in general but his wife is known to have been left upset and shaken by some of the abuse her husband has been receiving. Woodward is understood to have received death threats in the past. Gary Lineker, the former England striker and a friend of Woodward, responded to the sickening footage on social media by condemning the disgraceful scenes. The attack came shortly after United finally achieved a breakthrough in their protracted negotiations with Sporting Lisbon for Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes and 24 hours before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are due to face Manchester City in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Woodward had been coming under growing pressure from fans to make a signing given United’s injury problems and the lack of quality cover in midfield and attack. But despite widespread unhappiness at Woodward’s handling of the club, many fans joined in the chorus of condemnation for the attack. It was not the first time angry United fans have targeted homes, though. In October 2010, a mob of 30 fans turned up at Wayne Rooney’s former mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire after then England striker had spoken of his desire to quit Old Trafford. Rooney was warned not to sign for rivals Manchester City and soon after he signed an improved contract to stay with United. Woodward – who is the highest paid director in the Premier League with an annual salary of £3.16 million – was targeted before United’s game at home to Liverpool in October when fans chartered a plane over Old Trafford trailing a banner which read: “Ed still failing – Woodward out!”Tags: Ed WoodwardManchester Unitedlast_img read more

Rodgers full of praise for Sterling

first_img Liverpool harboured frustrations Hodgson revealed Sterling had complained of tiredness ahead of the Estonia clash, that England eventually won 1-0. Hodgson attended Sunday’s Loftus Road thriller, but left 10 minutes before the end – and the entire calamitous climax. Former Swansea boss Rodgers said he did not know whether England using Sterling sparingly in the last fortnight boosted his performance at QPR. Rodgers said there was no need for him or Sterling to meet up with Hodgson on Sunday. “I haven’t thought on that a lot to be honest, there has been a whole series of things said and written about an unfortunate incident,” said Rodgers. “But we have to move on from that. “I was actually quite busy believe it or not today, so I haven’t had the chance (to speak to Hodgson). “The kid’s played the game and now he’s having a shower – so I don’t think he’ll see him – not unless Roy’s having a shower! “We always talk, there’s no fallout, there’s no nothing. “I’m not a barrier for England, if anything I’m a big supporter of the home nations and every country. I like to think I develop players that will hopefully develop national teams. “So there’s no issue, Roy and I speak and communicate well, we’ll always find time to speak. “He’s a good man: I will always be here to support and help them.” Rangers boss Redknapp was left to lament his impressive side’s shocking luck – and launch a passionate defence of his Loftus Road tenure. The former Tottenham manager said he has no interest in speculation linking the likes of Tim Sherwood to replacing him at the west London club’s helm. “I couldn’t give a monkey’s about speculation, if you think I’m bothered, really, about silly people keeping writing rubbish,” said Redknapp. “I don’t even buy newspapers. “The only time I hear is if some idiot comes up to me and says ‘ooh, have you seen the paper today Harry?’ And I say ‘I don’t know, I don’t read it’. “I’m not interested: they can write what they want. “You only do what you can do, your best, that’s what you can do in life. “If it ain’t good enough, it’s up to other people to make their mind up. “I don’t go home and worry about speculation, I’m 68 nearly. “What am I worried about? I’m not 35 with five kids trying to pay a mortgage. “I do my best every day, I come in early, every morning I’m at the training ground early and I leave late at night. “I love my job, and I do my best: I can’t do any more and there ain’t no one could do any better here at the moment than me, I don’t think. “I hear other names mentioned, but they couldn’t do any better than what I can do, that’s for sure.” Brendan Rodgers hailed Raheem Sterling’s “courage and cleverness” in providing the perfect riposte to “unfortunate” criticism of his England omission as Liverpool tiptoed to a 3-2 victory at QPR. Sterling shook off controversy over claims he complained of tiredness in the build-up to England’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Estonia to mastermind Liverpool’s patchy Loftus Road win. Liverpool boss Rodgers said he has “no issue” with Roy Hodgson, pledging full support for England in spite of club frustrations over the Sterling revelations. Sterling forced Steven Caulker to turn the ball into his own net in the fourth minute of added time as the Reds gazumped luckless QPR to root Harry Redknapp’s men to the foot of the Premier League. Richard Dunne’s own goal gifted Liverpool the lead against the run of play, Eduardo Vargas twice equalised in the game’s frenetic dying stages either side of Philippe Coutinho’s strike, but Caulker’s error denied Rangers a deserved point. “I thought his cleverness and brightness led to the first goal,” said Rodgers of Sterling. “The best players come alive when the game goes dead, whether it’s a throw-in or in the game. “Some players look for a rest or try to get organised, but the bright players come alive. “He spotted it, played it early: it was a great run from Glen Johnson to invite the quick ball, and obviously a great cross that the defender turned in. “And the breakaways for the other two, they are just all about his speed, his technique, his courage to carry the ball, run with the ball. “It was great courage and cleverness from him today.” Press Associationlast_img read more

Okagbare Sets New African Sprint Record

first_imgNigeria’s Blessing Okagbare destroyed a stellar 100m field to set a new African record of 10.79 secs at Saturday’s IAAF Diamond League in London. An hour before that new persona best time, Okagbare had earlier in the semi final dismissed the 10.90secs African record held by Glory Alozie since 1998, clocking 10.84secs.The University of Texas in El Paso (UTEP) graduate had similarly won the London leg of the IAAF Samsung Diamond League last year.In the second heat, Jamaica’s reigning Olympic champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran a world leading 10.77 seconds to win thereby setting the stage for a titanic battle in the final. However, Okagbare was in her elements in the final, storming out of the blocks in bullet-like fashion to win the race and the maximum IAAF Diamond League points to take her tally to 10, two behind Fraser-Pryce who could only manage a fourth place (10.94).Barbara Pierre of the United States (10.85) came second while Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste ran 10.93 to place third. Cote d’Ivoire’s Ahoure Muriel ran a new 10.95 national record to place fifth. Interstingly, Okagbare chose the London meeting, tagged the Saintsbury Anniversary Games to commemorate last year’s Olympic Games, to announce to the whole world what happened at the games where she failed to fulfil expectations was just by happenstance. She also raced into reckoning as a firm favourite for the blue ribband title at next month’s 14th IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia. She is thus on the path of becoming the second Nigerian woman after Alozie to win an individual medal at the IAAF flagship championships and the first individual, man or woman to win a world title.Respected athletics coach, Tony Osheku who facilitated Okagbare’s move on scholarship to UTEP said Saturday that the five-time Nigerian 100m queen has shown she is right there with the very best in the world, pointing out that the decision by her kits sponsor, NIKE to take her under the coaching management of John Smith, renowned as the best sprints coach in the world as the best thing that has happened to in the last two years.“She has also received massive support from her state governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State and the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Chief Solomon Ogba. “With Blessing, Nigeria now has a real chance of having our national anthem played,” said Osheku, who coached Falilat Ogunkoya to two Olympic medals, the number one ranking in the world in the 400m in 1998 and two IAAF World Cup medals the same year.last_img read more

Spike in Buena Vista County coronavirus cases, no outbreak confirmed

first_imgJOHNSTON — More than 400 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in northwest Iowa’s Buena Vista County. Storm Lake, the county seat, has two Tyson meat processing plants, but Governor Kim Reynolds Wednesday said no business in the county has a confirmed outbreak, which is considered to be when 10 percent of the workforce is either out sick or tests positive for coronavirus.“At this point they have not met the criteria,” Reynolds said, “but you know we’re testing to make sure that we understand what the scope of that is and how we can start to isolate those that are testing positive, immediately start the case investigation so that we can get the negative individuals separated, look at how we separate the shifts and how we continue to move forward to minimize — as much as possible — a potential spike.”One of the state’s Test Iowa drive-through sites for COVID-19 screenings has been operating in Storm Lake since mid-May. The governor has said testing resources are being deployed to areas where virus activity seems to be increasing.“It helps us identify the numbers,” Reynolds said late Wednesday morning. “It helps us start immediately the contract tracing or case investigation so we can understand the scope and make sure that Iowans in the area are aware of what we’re seeing and provide them the additional information to be cautious when they’re out in the community.”Tyson Foods released a written statement about what it called “large scale COVID-19 testing in Storm Lake.” The company’s spokesman said Tyson “will disclose verified test results, once complete data is available with health and government officials, team members and other stakeholders.”A state website with data about COVID-19 test results, coronavirus deaths and hospital stays lists nursing homes which are the site of coronavirus outbreaks, but it does not list confirmed outbreaks at businesses, like packing plants. Iowa Department of Public Health deputy director Sarah Reisetter said one reason for the policy is to let the companies first notify workers who may be affected.“Sometimes it takes us a little bit of time to pull together the information and to understand whether there has been an outbreak in a particular facility,” Reisetter said.On Tuesday, state officials confirmed outbreaks at Perdue Farms facilities in Sioux City and Sioux Center, based on testing conducted in early May.“Our business partners are trying to be proactive to let not only their employees know that they have a safe environment to work in and they want to assure them and provide the confidence to them to come to work in a safey environment, but it’s also they’re partners in the community,” Reynolds said during her daily news conference, “so they take that responsibility very serious, too.”Reynolds also announced Wednesday morning that a new “Test Iowa” facility is opening in West Burlington. It’s being run as a public-private partnership between the State of Iowa and Great River Health. The hospital set up a drive-through testing site, but could not get test kits. The kits are now being provided by Test Iowa.last_img read more

Spaniards around the world: Víctor Ruiz, Garrido, Fran Pastor …

first_imgLime and sand in South AmericaWorse were the news that came from South America, where Angel Lopez debuted on the bench of Delfín SC with defeat in the final of the Ecuador Super Cup. After finishing the 90 minutes with one draw, the cetaceans fell on penalties (5-4) against the League of Quito. Neither could the physical trainer of Uruguay celebrate his first title in Uruguay Felix Martinez. Despite forcing the extension in 95 ‘, the team led by Gustavo Munúa succumbed 4-2 in the title match against Liverpool. The Spaniards who militate in Bolivian football had better sensations. Michelangelo Portugal he managed to take Royal Pari to his first victory at the height (3,800 meters) of Oruro, where he won over San José thanks to the Saucedo and Spanish goals Iker Hernandez. The former Real Sociedad or Athletic debuted as a scorer in 2020, something his compatriot also did Fran Pastor with Real Potosí. The former RSD player Alcala scored the goal with which the lilac team won 2-1 against Santa Cruz and ended a three-game win streak.More than 6,200 kilometers from Potosí, in Monterrey, Querétaro defeated the current champion of the MX League with the Kike ‘Cadet’ in the starting lineup and playing the 90 minutes in the left lane. The roosters added their third victory in a consecutive way and, after four days disputed the closing, occupy the second position of the Aztec championship equaled points with Leon, who leads the table.Asia dresses upThe first weekend of February was full of joys for Spanish soccer players and coaches from the Asian continent. In Qatar Al Sadd of Xavi Hernandez, without Gabi Fernández in the call, he managed to beat Al Sailiya 3-0 and cut three points with respect to the leadership of the Qatar Stars League, which continues to hold Al Duhail despite falling against Al Rayyan. He also won the Al Wakrah of Tintin Marqueznamed best coach of January in Qatar. The Blue and Whites defeated Pepe Murcia’s Al Shahaniya with Isaías Sánchez and Cristian Ceballos in the eleven. He also took advantage of the weekend to win three points at Al Wahda Manolo Jiménez, which imposed 0-1 on Al Jazira in the Abu Dhabi derby. The Brazilian Lucas Pimienta scored the only goal of a match that meant the debut of Gaspar Baker in the football of the Arab Emirates. In Saudi Arabia he won Al Shabab, which already has six games without losing under the baton of Luis García Plaza. In India we live a ‘Spanish derby’ between Chennai City, current I-League champion, and Mohun Bagan, who aspires to a championship in which he is currently a leader. Six Spaniards – three for each team – were starters in a match that Caltura managed to take the three points (2-3). The Basque Joseba Beitia gave two assists, one of them to his countryman Fran Gonzalez, who scored again with Mohun and already has six goals in the league this season. Also in India, although in the Super League, it was the confrontation between the Jamshedpur of Iriondo and the ATK of López Habas. It was the second who took the victory after winning 0-3 with a great performance by Edu Garcia. The first weekend of February was plagued by Spanish protagonists in foreign leagues around the world. The agonizing triumph of St. Gallen by Víctor Ruiz and Jordi Quintilla in Basel, the classification of the Étoile du Sahel by Juan Carlos Garrido for the quarterfinals of the African Champions League or the first goal of Fran Pastor with the Real Potosí Bolivian starred in the day of the ‘Spaniards around the world’.Europe: Víctor Ruiz, Pol Llonch …There is no one to stop St. Gallen from Victor Ruiz Y Jordi Quintillà. The San Galo team went to the winter break after falling to Zurich, but two consecutive victories have raised him to the top of the Swiss Super League. The last against Basel and with a goal in the 93rd minute. The locals were ahead in 19 ‘by Bua, but Fazliji achieved the draw before the break after a corner kicked by Victor Ruiz and Ribeiro, already at the discount, took a shot of Bakayoko to make 1-2.He also won the Willem II, which achieved his first 2020 win with Pol Llonch in the starting lineup and playing the 90 minutes. Those of Tilburg, which already tthey have more points than in 10 of their last 12 participations in the Eredivisie, took advantage of the defeat of the PSV in Amsterdam to take hold in the fourth place of the First Division of the Netherlands. He also won the Twente in the Netherlands, which ended with a streak of eight official matches without winning three Spanish players in the eleven. Julio Pleguezuelo, Oriol Busquets Y Aitor Cantalapiedra They made headlines in the team led by the Spanish-Uruguayan Gonzalo García, who won 2-0 against Sparta Rotterdam. Cantalapiedra threw away the corner that Bijen made in the 1-0 in the 80 ‘and Lang, already in the discount, signed the 2-0. Javier Espinosa saw the whole match from the bench. He attended and also scored Toni Martínez in the tie (2-2) between Famalicao and Río Ave. The Murcian forward advanced to those of Vila Nova in 10 ‘and 27’ minutes later enabled Pote, who put land in the middle in the light. In spite of leaving with a rent of two goals to the rest, the Famalicao of Martinez and Álex Centelles, who played the entire game in the left lane, let the three points escape in just 10 minutes, the time it took for Gelson and Tarantini to equalize the contest. In Gibraltar we attended the classic between Lincoln Red Imps and Europa FC, in which 13 of the 22 starting players were Spanish. It was one of them, Juampe, who opened the scoring in favor of Europe, which ended up winning 0-2 and taking hold in the first place of the Gibraltarian First Division. He also won St. Joseph’s. The team of Raúl Procopio Lions prevailed 5-3 with full Spanish in the scorer section: Juanfri (2), Boro (2) and Pedrito scored. There were also Spanish protagonists in Africa, where Juan Carlos Garrido he managed to qualify the Tunisian Étoile du Sahel to the quarterfinals of the Champions League. He did so after defeating Zimbabwe’s Platinum 2-0 and climbing to the top position of Group B. He was eliminated from the Petro de Luanda competition. The Angolan team led by Toni Cosano reaped four draws and two losses, which prevented him from moving from third place in Group C.last_img read more

Police Chief Clears Sewage Spill on Busy Water Street

first_imgPolice Inspector Sudue arrives at Water Street, where the sewage eruptedBy Samuel G. DwehCrowds of traders at the intersection of Mechlin and Water streets in Monrovia yesterday, February 22, welcomed the new Inspector General (IG) of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Patrick T. Sudue, with heroic chants as he marched towards a spillage of sewage that had erupted in the middle of Water Street. “Welcome, police boss! Welcome, police boss…!” some of the traders shouted and others sang, “No hands for the IGP? No hands for the IGP?”In local parlance, the ‘hands’ for someone means ‘applause.’The LNP boss had come with the Liberia Water & Sewer Corporation’s waste collection tanker marked GSA-LWSC 05-5, with plate number (LB) 0767.The stench from the sewage filled the air. “Remove those barricades!” the IGP shouted to some of the men with him, pointing to two ropes tied around a heap of what appeared to be fecal matter that had erupted through the sewage manhole in the middle of the street. The guys rushed toward the ropes and cut them.As the men worked, the Inspector General told this reporter that he was acting on a plea from the chairman of the Patriotic Entrepreneurs of Liberia (PATEL) to have the sewage unclogged and the area cleaned.“Mr. Presely Tenwah of PATEL called me yesterday, told me about feces pumping out of the ground in a market area and begged me to assist him on its clearance,” he said.As the LWSC truck arrives, a trader explains to LNP Inspector Sudue and the PATEL’s Tenwah (3rd from right) what has been going onAs to why he personally showed up at the spot of the hazardous spill, instead of giving orders to some of the many junior officers of the LNP, the IGP responded that he came because he is “a servant of the people.”While the LWSC workers were desludging the manhole by pumping the excess sewage into the tanker, the LNP boss gave some money to one of the men and another amount to the driver of the tanker.“For your cold water,” he said, and marched out of the throng of traders and passersby who had stopped to watch the scene. The gesture sparked a rush of excitement among the young traders.“That’s sixty U.S. dollars!” a male trader exclaimed to his colleagues. PATEL’s chairman, Tenwah, told this reporter that some officials of his institution had informed him about the sewage problem four days prior to the day the IGP followed him there.Tenwah said the sewage problem in a market area worries him “because I am a leader in the business community.”None of the men clearing the sewage had a nose-mask, including one who identified himself as Joe Davies, 22, an employer of the LW&SC.“I’m used to it now; I’ve been doing this since I joined Water and Sewer in 2013,” he said.LWSC workers de-sludging the man-hole on Water StreetMany traders had been conducting their daily activities, including sometimes eating, in the nauseating scent of the feces. One of them, Mercy Miatta Mulbah, 23, whose shower slippers table was a few yards away from the sewage problem, said she and other traders cannot abandon their wares when they are eating because, “When you leave your market table to eat at another place, somebody will steal your market.”The rope-barricade was erected by some young traders as a means of calling the government’s attention to the feces, some of them disclosed.“I was one of those who blocked the road,” Edwin Kollie, 39, whose made-in-Ghana slippers table was situated just a few feet from the sewage eruption, said. “If we had not done that, the government would continue ignoring this. Government officials pass through pupu water here every day.”Two days prior to Sudue’s visit to the scene, some police officers came in a police car to pass but met the barricade, said a trader who sells imported sneakers.“They came down with pistols but we dared them to cut the rope,” he said. The presence of spilled sewage in market areas in many parts of the nation’s capital, Monrovia, has been a recurrent scene since the exit of Madam Mary Broh, Acting Mayor of the City of Monrovia.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgA man, who admitted to fracturing the nose of his ex-male partner after an argument, was on Monday charged and appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.Leon MurrayThirty-five-year-old Leon Murray appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty after he was slapped with two charges. The first charge alleged that on September 5, 2019 at Georgetown, he maliciously damaged one spectacle valued at $30,000 property of Shawn Solomon. The second charge alleged that on September 5, 2019 at Georgetown, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Solomon. The unrepresented man pleaded not guilty to the first charge; however, he pleaded guilty to the second charge with explanation. In his pleadings to the court Murray stated that Solomon pulled out two knives and started to fire chops. “It cut my hand, he then pick up a big wood and throw it on my neck. Local MLA challenges call for carbon tax increase with petition

first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — In what he sees as a case of putting the views of the majority of his constituents ahead of those of his party, Peace River North Liberal MLA Pat Pimm has started a petition against the government’s proposed Climate Leadership Plan.Launched last Thursday, with a first day total of nearly 500 signatures, the petition targets the 32 recommendation draft report issued by a government appointed 18-member Climate Leadership Team, which Pimm believes had an unbalanced issue oriented membership.- Advertisement -As reported earlier, supporters of the committee recommendations called on the government to implement the suggested changes this spring in an open letter to the Premier released last week. Including a recommendation that the current $30 a tonne BC carbon tax be increased twelve times that amount by 2050.Pimm, in his ‘No Increase to BC Carbon Tax’ petition message to the Premier and his Liberal caucus colleagues, has offered some practical application math, including how implementation of that recommendation would impact consumer prices at BC filling stations. Now keep in mind that’s just the carbon tax portion of the posted price, and Mr. Pimm has also included a local industry impact example, noting the current carbon tax, costs Spectra Energy over 70 million dollars per year, but by 2050 under the revised plan that amount would jump to 840 million.Critics and supporters are reminded the government has extended the deadline of the two month public comment period on the committee report until Friday.Advertisementlast_img read more

LICENSES TO DRILL FOR OIL OFF DONEGAL UP FOR GRABS TODAY

first_imgDONEGAL could be sitting on a multi-million euro fortune if new flexible government rules on oil production are met with a positive response today. The Irish Offshore Operators Association (IOOA) anticipates increased interest in the latest round of applications for gas and oil exploration off the Donegal coast, with those applications closing today.Gas and oil exploration companies will apply for new authorisations in the Atlantic Margin off Donegal. The applications have the potential to boost the offshore oil industry in the county in several service sectors.Industry sources told donegaldaily at a briefing yesterday that there is the potential for thousands of new jobs, with one insider insisting: “Killybegs could be the Donegal equivalent of Aberdeen with so many high-tech positions and well paid positions.“But it will not just be about Killybegs; the whole county could get a lift from well-managed oil and gas exploration off our coast.”It can take two years from exploration to drilling; but Ireland has lagged behind Britain in this sector. The industry insider added: “We actually don’t know how much gas and oil is off our coast. There could be a multi-billion dollar fortune – and if there is, Donegal and the people of Donegal could benefit.”Minister Pat Rabbitte is on record as saying that Ireland needed ‘‘more exploration for oil and gas, not less’’ and the country needed ‘‘more discoveries like the Corrib gas field’’.He said that, without an increase in exploration, Ireland would not benefit from its indigenous natural resources.LICENSES TO DRILL FOR OIL OFF DONEGAL UP FOR GRABS TODAY was last modified: May 31st, 2011 by gregShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalgasoil industrylast_img read more

There was no jackpot winner. The winner of the €50 lucky ticket was Ross Doherty, Dooish.Next weeks jackpot is €3450.Remember if you’re not in, you can’t win!!!CAPPRY ROVERSCappry Rovers 1-4 Gweedore CelticGweedore Celtic went away with the three points from Cappry Park when they had a 4-1 victory over Cappry Rovers in an entertaining game.In the 1st half both teams played some good football with both teams creating chances.Cappry took the lead in the 33rd minute when the Gweedore keeper could only parry a shot from Aaron Kelly and the ball fell to Stephen Carr who drilled it to the net from ten yards. The visitors went in search of the equaliser and were rewarded when they were awarded a penalty in the 36th minute for a tackle in the box and Shane Porter scored from the spot. Both teams created numerous chances after this but to no avail. They went in at the break 1-1.Gweedore went in front in the 46th minute when a shot was parried by Eoin Gallen and it fell to Jay Dee and he scored from close range. There was more trouble for Cappry in the 55th minute when Jamie Boyle scored to the bottom of the net with a shot.Tommy Diver scored Gweedores 4th goal in the 67th with a header following a free kick.Cappry pushed forward looking to get goals back  but to no avail.Team Performance from Cappry.Shane Porter and Ryan Kelly were best for Gweedore.Cappry are back in action next week in the FAI Junior Cup when they entertain Cavan Celtic at the earlier time of 1.30pm, Cappry Park. Come up and support the lads and you might even get a cup of tea and a biscuit!!Training in Cappry Park on Wednesday evening from 7pm.CAPPRY ROVERS RESERVESMilford United Reserves 1-1 Cappry Rovers ReservesCappry travelled to Moyle View Park for their 1st away game of the season in the league. In the 5th minute they grabbed the lead when the Milford goalkeepers clearance landed straight to Conor Laverty who made no mistake in slotting the ball low into the bottom corner of the net. Unfortunately Cappry couldn’t capitalise on their lead and allowed Milford back into the game. After a good move down the right in the 35th minute Milford got back on level terms. It stayed like that until half time. Both teams had a chance to win it in the 2nd half but to no avail. On the balance of play, a draw was probably a fair result. Team efforts from both teams.Next week the lads make the short trip to our neighbours in the Curragh. The game is scheduled to be played on Friday evening with a 7.30pm kick off.Come and offer your support to the lads.CAPPRY CRUSADERS U16’sCappry Crusaders played their 1st home game of the season on Sunday morning when they played Ballyraine Celtic. Cappry were under a lot of pressure in the 1st half but our back line played very well and our stand in goalkeeper, Jack Marley, pulled of some great saves. Unfortunately 5 minutes from half time Ballyraine broke the deadlock and managed to get 3 quick goals before the break. In the 2nd half Cappry came out and attacked a bit more and were unfortunate not to get a bit more from the game. Conor McCormack felt a bit unlucky not to get on the scoresheet when he and many others felt that the keeper dropped his free kick over the line. The referee didn’t agree and they had to battle on. In the 60th minute Darren Marley broke up field and eventually got the goal that they so badly deserved. Ballyraine probably feel they deserved the win but Cappry also feel we should have got at least a point. Final score, Cappry Crusaders 1-3 Ballyraine Celtic.Next weekend they face a tricky away trip to Dunfanaghy Youths. Time to be confirmed later. Training will be in Cappry Park, Thursday from 7.15pm to 8.30pm.CAPPRY ROVERS U14’s Cappry Rovers travelled to Drumkeen on Saturday morning and had a day they would prefer to forget. On a day that nothing went right for our lads, Drumkeen ran out deserving winners on a 7-0 scoreline.CAPPRY ROVERS U12’sCappry Rovers played Castlefin Celtic on Wednesday last in Castlefin and came away with a 5-0 win with Luke McGlynn (2), Mark Mbuli, Jack Long and Kevin McCormack getting the goals. They welcomed Fintown Harps to Cappry on Saturday evening and got a comprehensive 10-1 victory. Kevin McCormack(3), Luke McGlynn (2), Sean Ward(2), Mark Mbuli, Jack Long and Daniel Marley got the Cappry goals. That has now moved them to 9 points from 3 games in their group which sees them finish top.CAPPRY CRUSADERS U12’sCappry Crusaders made the short trip to the Finn Valley Centre where they played Ballybofey United Colts this evening. Ballybofey were the 1st to get on the score sheet when they broke through the Cappry defence and made no mistake with the finish. Cappry were quick to react to going 1 down and with Ballybofey still celebrating their opening goal, Martin Mbuli made no mistake when he drove through their defence and hammered the ball into the back of the net. Credit must be giving to Ballybofey with their reaction and were soon 2-1 up again. Further goals from Martin Mbuli and Eddie McCauley put Cappry 3-2 ahead at the break. In the 2nd half Cappry kick on a gear and Martin got another 2 goals to bring his tally to 4 for the evening. Dylan Gallagher and Aaron Lyons got a goal a piece. Final score was 7-2 to Cappry Crusaders. Training for the Crusaders will be on Thursday from 7.15 to 8.30pm in Cappry Park.UNDERAGE TRAININGKeep an eye on our Facebook page for details of training sessions.CLUB TRAINING ORDER EVENINGWe will be taking orders for our club gear on Friday evening in the clubhouse from 6pm to 7pm. First identify challenges to small business: Zulu

first_img27 May 2014Lindiwe Zulu, the woman in charge of South Africa’s newly created Department of Small Business Development, says that while the role of small business in job creation is widely recognised, it is important to be sensitive to the challenges faced by the sector.“It’s about dialoguing with them to see where the challenges are,” Zulu told SAnews after her swearing in as the new minister in Pretoria on Monday.“This is a new ministry, but the sector is not new,” she added. “There’s a lot of work that’s already been done by the Department of Trade and Industry and other departments. For us it will be about pulling out that work and seeing what has worked and what hasn’t.”Zulu said that skills development and financing were some of the challenges faced by small businesses. “Sometimes people get a little money and they think that they’ve got a lot, only to realise that that money wasn’t really enough. So the issue of saving amongst our people is also very important.”The former International Affairs adviser has travelled extensively on the continent and has seen how small businesses thrive in other countries – and how foreign nationals who come to South Africa start up thriving small businesses.“You look at some of the foreigners that are in South Africa today. They arrive in South Africa with almost nothing, but they network, they support each other. Those are the things I think one would have to deal with in assisting SMMEs, because there’s got to be a connection, networking and support for each other.”The department will also look at the issue of the government not paying small businesses within the prescribed 30-day time period, while also engaging with the country’s financial institutions and helping to get small business owners organised into formations.“We need to find a way to pull people together; the issue of cooperatives, for instance, is one of the most important elements,” Zulu said.Business welcomes new departmentEarlier on Monday, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) welcomed the establishment of the new ministry, saying it had been “high on the chamber’s wish list”.“Sacci has and will continue to engage towards an SME department that serves the development interests of SMEs and the economy,” Sacci CEO Neren Rau said in a statement.“This includes simplifying the SME regulatory environment, reviewing and expanding incentives for SMEs, and championing the cause of SMEs with other government department and the Presidency vis-a-vis policy development.”In his 2014 Budget speech in Cape Town in February, former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said small business people had raised concerns that they were not receiving enough support in order to raise their enterprises to levels at which they could contribute to the country’s growth. The Budget allocated R6.5-billion over three years for supporting small and medium enterprises.Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

Understanding Indoor Air Quality (1) – Building Science Podcast

first_imgThis podcast series is excerpted from a two-day class called “Building Science Fundamentals” taught by Dr. Joe Lstiburek and Dr. John Straube, of Building Science Corporation.Last week, Dr. John discussed humidity and the damage it can do to a building. This week, Dr. Joe explains his preferred method of evaluating indoor air quality and why it works. He also points out that air contaminants are usually a symptom of the breakdown of building materials by water, heat, ultraviolet light, and ozone.__________________________________________________Practical air quality evaluationWe’re going to do the four p’s: people, pollutant, path, pressure. That’s a way of looking at indoor air quality, it’s a completely different way of looking at things from the traditional industrial hygiene community view of indoor air quality, which is based on concentration of contaminates versus dilution. That approach is completely correct, completely accurate, and totally useless. The approach that I’m going to propose is not completely accurate, not completely precise, but extremely useful. And so, as an engineer, this is going to be approximately correct, but not precisely or strictly correct. So it’s gonna get you eighty, ninety percent of the way to understanding what’s going on with very little effort; and once you’ve got the big picture sort of figured out, you can then transition into the traditional, industrial hygiene approach. How it worksOkay. What’s this based on? If you have people over here, and you have a pollutant over there, you don’t have a problem because the people and the pollutant aren’t in the same place. You need a way for the pollutant to get to the people; so you need a connection. You need a path. If you have people here, the pollutant here, and you have a path, you have a problem. Well, you don’t yet — you still need something to push the pollutant down the path to the people. You need a pressure. So you need all four things for there to be a problem: people, pollutant, path, pressure. Many different people and pollutantsThe trouble with people is that they’re people! No two people are alike, so it’s difficult to get a uniform or identical response from people to a similar exposure. Some people are more sensitive than others to the same exposure. I’m a very sensitive person and you know, even to modest exposures of things I react in strange ways. You know a very small amount of alcohol makes me do very, very, very strange things. So anyway, people don’t act the same way to the same exposure. So it’s very difficult to make recommendations on exposures, because, how do you choose which group of people, or what type of person you’re dealing with? In terms of pollutants, there are a million of them available to deal with! Which one do you pick? You would go broke if all you did was try to measure pollutants. The problem with pollutant measurement technology is that we don’t have the ability to go into a space and measure the pollutants in the space. Now I’m going to be very careful about what I’ve just said. If you go into a space, we don’t have the technology to measure the pollutants in the space. You don’t go into a space and ask: “what’s in the air in this space?” You go into a space and you ask: “is this in the space? or this in the space? Or is this in the space? You’ve got a million choices to ask about. So when somebody says: “We’ve tested the air in this space, and we didn’t find anything.” No, what they’re really saying is, “What we tested for we didn’t find within our limits of accuracy of the test procedure that we used.” That’s very, very different from saying, “There’s nothing wrong with the air.” Just means what we tested for, we didn’t find within the limits of the test.Don’t start with air testingWell how the hell do you know what to test for? Well, you shouldn’t test for things until you already understand the problem. And so, that’s why all of the people who really know about indoor air quality, like the EPA and the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, say that the last thing you should do is start off an investigation of indoor air quality by doing air testing. Because any of the money that you use on testing won’t be available to you to fix the problem. And the air testing is always going to find stuff in the air, you’re just not going to know what it means. And it gets even worse. If you find stuff in the air you have to ask yourself, is it bad or good? And more fundamentally, where did it come from? We don’t know whether it’s bad or good because very few contaminants have known dose/response relationships so we can actually set acceptable or unacceptable limits to it. So it’s very difficult to measure something in the air, and say, “This is actually bad, and it’ll be good if it drops below this concentration.” We can only do that with very few things. Usually it’s stuff that people don’t manufacture, make, or distribute. So we have really, really good standards for radon. Why? Nobody makes it. Who are you going to sue, God? Right? So let’s say you find something in the air. Where the hell does it come from? Well, that’s pretty fundamental, or pretty important.Pollutants often come from damaged materialsAnd so I’m going to say: forget about that. Most pollutants come from things that get really hot, or really wet, or exposed to ultraviolet light or ozone. We call these things damage function. When damage functions act on materials they damage them. That’s why we call them damage functions. And one of the things that results from the damage is that the stuff falls apart. And as it falls apart, or breaks down, the break down particles are often contaminants in the form of gasses and particles. So as you expose materials to damage functions, your break down products can be viewed as contaminants that are in the form of gasses and particles and the particles are very tiny, they have a very tiny aerodynamic diameter that they can get into the air, and be transported in the air as the solid form. What’s the biggest source? And so what part of your building gets the hottest, and wettest, and most exposed to ultraviolet light and ozone? It’s the roof. So what’s the typical roof? You know, a black EPDM membrane. And you’re on the top of that black EPDM membrane roof in July. And the temperature is what? One hundred and eighty degrees. So you go up on that roof, and you’re standing there, and you go (inhale) — what do you smell? The roof! The roof is emitting huge quantities of VOCs — volatile organic compounds. If you take your hand and you rub it on the top of the roof it’ll actually fall apart in your hand. If those particles get into the air we have an aerosol. So you can actually sense — feel with your own nose because your nose is actually more accurate for detecting chemicals than a gas chromatograph — and you can actually smell the roof breaking down while you’re on it. Which is why it’s always a good idea to put you’re building’s fresh air intake up on the roof. Because you then actually hoover up the VOCs and eject them right into the breathing zone of the occupied space. The pollutant is the symptom, not the problemWho are the mold folks here? There are a couple of mold folks here. What we’ve learned is that you don’t look for mold because you’re always going to find mold in the air. What you look for is the wet spot, because that’s where the mold is coming from. So you search for mold by looking for water. Alright? So you search for VOCs not by looking for VOCs; you search for VOCs by looking for something that’s hot that would be giving off the VOCs. So you look for pollutants by looking for the thing that’s hot, or wet, or exposed to ultraviolet light, or to ozone. And then ask yourself, are those things connected to the breathing zone of the occupied space by a pathway and pressure relationship? I only sample after I know what’s going on, in order to shut up people that don’t know what’s going on. So you don’t look for pollutants, you look for the hot spot, the wet spot, the spot that’s exposed to ultraviolet light and ozone and work backwards via a pollutant, pressure, and pathway relationship. So you do an indoor air quality investigation by thinking in two dimensions at the same time. On one axis is what? People, pollutant, path, pressure. On the other axis is hot, wet, UV. Now, there’s ozone in there, but the first three damage functions are in order of magnitude more significant than the fourth one. So the really, really important ones are hot, wet, UV; ozone is kind of important, but it’s not in the same league as the other one. Why even mention it? Because it’s not insignificant. In other words it’s not the big three, but it can cause you some grief. Are you with me on this? How damaging are these effects? Now, each one of these effects by itself is annoying. Two or three of them acting together is really, really bad. We view these as being exponential and synergistic. Exponential means that each affect by itself gets very, very, very bad, but nor on a linear increase, but on a really ramping increase. So we know with temperature, every ten degree rise Kelvin in a material doubles the off-gassing rate. That’s eighteen degrees Fahrenheit. So you double the badness of a material every 18 degrees. Using Joe math that’s approximately what? Twenty. So every twenty degree increase you double the off-gassing. Now, it doesn’t take very long to have a factor of four. That would be how many degrees? Forty. Cause it’s two by two, so the first twenty degrees doubles it, the second twenty degrees doubles the double. So that would be four. See you want your salary to be increasing exponentially, not linearly. Right? Ok. Now the same thing with humidity. It turns out as you double vapor pressure, you basically double off-gassing. And that’s approximately eighteen percent relative humidity. That’s purely by chance. They’re not connected, the eighteen and eighteen — it just happened serendipitously … accidentally … I can’t even frickin’ pronounce it. Alright. Now the same thing with UV light. Every ten percent increase in UV light results in the doubling of the factors. Now when any two of them are acting together, they’re not additive affects, they’re multiplicative affects, so if you really what to trash something, make it hot, make it wet, and expose it to sunlight. And then zap it with a little bit of ozone. Why should people care? It’s the same thing for humans, not just materials. It’s true. If you want to live a long time, you go to some place that it’s cold, that it’s dry, you protect yourself from UV light, you stay away from urban areas, because urban areas have what? Ozone! And you eat nuts and berries. So you’ll live a very long time but you’ll feel miserable and wish you were dead. So where is the worst place to retire? Florida! Cause you’re going to a place that has what? Hot, wet, humidity, and it’s an urban area. So you’re going to frickin’ die. Alright, let’s go to hospitals. The worst thing to do if you’re sick is to be in a humidified space. The dryer it is, the healthier it is. So why do we humidify hospitals? Cause they’re filled with explosive gasses and we don’t want them to blow up. That’s very unhealthy. Unfortunately, you get lots of mold and bacterial growth and that’s really bad, cause if you’re sick, your immune system is weak, and you’re exposed to these opportunistic pathogens. So the most dangerous place to be if you’re sick is in a humidified hospital. It’s part of the new health care system. Alright. People, pollutants, path, pressure. Cause there’s always going to be a pathway, and there’s always going to be pressures. You can never get rid of all the holes, you can just get rid of the big holes.last_img read more

How to Get a Job In Sales (Part Two)

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 3rd book: Eat Their Lunch “The first ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition.” Buy Now A long time ago, I wrote a post about how to get a job in sales. It is mostly right. What is really wrong is corrected here, with apologies for not writing this sooner.Right now I have an open position for a sales manager for one of my companies. I have been very involved in the process of hiring this person, as they are instrumental to the success of the business (as all sales managers are). There are ads for this position running on Indeed.com, ZipRecruiter, and Careerbuilder. These ads have been run multiple times, and the resumes have really stacked up. There are now more than 400 resumes, half of which lack the requisite experience, as they have no sales or leadership history at all. These ads have been running for weeks. Over 400 people have sent me their resume. Yet, not a single one of the people who sent me their CV have had the gumption to pick up the phone to call me to ask me for an interview. If you want a job in sales, you have to demonstrate the fundamental skills and abilities of a salesperson. You have to pursue what it is that you want, especially if it is an opportunity. How can you be a salesperson without knowing how to schedule an appointment with a prospect? If you are a sales manager, you are a leader. How can you lead salespeople if you are unwilling to serve as an example of what you want them to be? Would you recommend the people on your team send emails and wait to see if anyone emails them back for an appointment?Sales isn’t an endeavor that allows for passivity. Leadership requires that you lead the action to move forward towards some goal, some better future. It doesn’t allow you to wait to see if anything happens for you. These behaviors repel success. If you want a job in sales, act like a salesperson. If you want to lead or manage a sales force, demonstrate the behaviors you will expect of the people you lead. Do this and you will massively compress the time it takes you to get work.last_img read more

Kapil Dev ends stand-off, back on board with BCCI

first_imgKapil Dev ended his long stand-off with the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) on Wednesday. The World Cup-winning skipper, who was sacked as National Cricket Academy chief after taking over as the head of the rebel Indian Cricket League met BCCI president, N Srinivasan, at its Mumbai office and submitted a letter to bury the differences. The BCCI, in a statement, said Kapil wrote to it that he has resigned from Essel Sports Private Limited, the ICL promoters, and that he has pledged renewed support to the board.Although many former players and domestic cricketers were given amnesty by the BCCI after submitting letters regretting their act of joining hands with the ICL, Kapil had been steadfast in his stand that he did nothing wrong.Facing criticism for its treatment of the former national skipper, Srinivasan broke the ice in a brief meeting with Kapil when the BCCI brass assembled in Delhi on July 16 for the Working Committee meeting. Now that Kapil is back in BCCI’s good books, he should get the withheld money from the IPL profits and also the withheld pension as well as the arrears for the last five years.last_img read more

Allan Border feels Ashes under ‘threat’ amid CA pay dispute

first_imgFormer Australia skipper Allan Border has expressed his concerns for the incoming home Ashes series this year amidst the long-standing pay dispute between Cricket Australia and Australian Cricketers Association (ACA).”It just feels it ( Ashes) could be under threat, there’s a month until they’re all out of contract and they’re not even talking,” news.com.au quoted Border as saying. “I’m a bit fearful. I’ve just got that feel it’s going to get ugly.””The guys now know exactly what the revenues are they know the percentage they get, back in the day we wondered if we were getting our fair share, but we just did what we were told,” he added.Insisting that players are going to stand strong, the Aussie great expressed hope that the matter would be solved soon and the players could get to some middle ground. In March, CA made an offer, proposing that the average pay of Australia’s international women’s players would rise from $A79,000 to $A179,000, while the average remuneration of state cricketers would more than double to $A52,000.Under CA’s proposal, only male international players would have the chance to share in any surplus revenue, while other domestic male players and women at both domestic and international level would have to settle for fixed amounts which would not fluctuate according to the game’s income. However, the ACA pointed out a series of concerns with the proposal, saying that it “disrespects the value of domestic cricketers and the role they play in Australian cricket”.advertisementThe major reason behind the ACA’s opposition is CA’s proposal to scrap a shared revenue model for player payments, which has been in place for nearly 20 years.Cricket Australia had in May threatened that players would not be paid beyond June 30, the date of expiry of their current five-year financial deal, if they don’t accept the governing body’s new proposed offer.Hitting back at the threat, Australian opener David Warner had said the players are united to reject CA’s proposal and that they would not “buckle at all” in their pay row with their national board. The 30-year-old had further noted that cricket’s marketplace offer both international and domestic players plenty of opportunities to play T20 matches elsewhere if CA maintained its hard-line stance. The ACA has already announced that it will be establishing a player support fund for female and domestic cricketers in an event of the stalled MoU talks with CA not progressing June 30.last_img read more

3rd T20I: Lewis, Paul help West Indies crush Bangladesh by 50 runs to clinch T20I series

first_imgMotivated by a no-ball decision against his team, fast bowler Keemo Paul took 5-15 as West Indies won the Twenty20 series against Bangladesh 2-1 after a bad-tempered 50-run win in the third match on Saturday.Put into bat, opener Evin Lewis smashed a 36-ball 89, with six fours and eight sixes, to help West Indies pile up 190 before being bowled out in 19.2 overs.Paul, along with left-arm spinner Fabian Allen (2-19), then helped to dismiss Bangladesh for 140 in 17 overs.Bangladesh made a rapid start, thanks to Liton Das, despite opener Tamim Iqbal being run out for 8.Das helped Bangladesh to go past 50 in just four overs before he was caught off pacer Oshane Thomas but the delivery was judged to be a no-ball.West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite and his players protested the decision with Thomas’ foot shown to be on the line and the game was stopped for around 10 minutes with no review allowed. Match referee Jeff Crowe intervened, the decision stood, and play resumed.West Indies didn’t review the decision on advice from management.”The rule is that if a no-ball is called it cannot be reviewed or reversed,” Brathwaite said. “But if it isn’t called, it can be reversed checking the video.”Everyone saw that it was not a no-ball. For a young man who is inexperienced, Oshane Thomas was under the pump. To finally get a dismissal but the ball has gone to your name as a free hit, to bowl the extra ball with an extra run, obviously it messed his mindset.advertisement”I am not saying the officials are cheating because I think they are professionals. However, I can just call what I see. If we are seeing we are not getting the rub of the green, the 50-50s, then as captain of the ship I will say that. I must commend the match referee. After we had some stern words, it was resolved. We worked too hard for my team to walk off the field or forfeit the game or series.”The dispute fueled West Indies to such an extent that the tourists hit back with three wickets for one run in nine balls with Allen and Paul at the fore.Allen got Soumya Sarkar (9) and Shakib Al Hasan for a duck in consecutive deliveries before Paul dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim (1).From 56-1 before the no-ball dispute, Bangladesh was 66-4.”I don’t know what all the rules are pertaining to reviews,” Brathwaite said, “so I don’t want to tell them how to do their job. But it can be looked at. The laws may be put into question after this incident.”Paul then ran though the Bangladesh batting lineup, varying his pace well to leave Bangladesh 96-8 and became only the second West Indies bowler to take five-for in T20 cricket after former skipper Darren Sammy (5-26) against Zimbabwe in 2010.Mehidy Hasan (19) and Abu Hider (22 not out) took Bangladesh past 100 runs.Earlier, Bangladesh’s bowlers bowled well to deny West Indies reaching the 200-run mark as the hosts sought a tour sweep against West Indies after winning the two-match test series 2-0 and the ODI series 2-1.Evin Lewis launched West Indies in aggressive style and the visitors racked up 88 runs in the first powerplay with the loss of Shai Hope.In the third over of the innings, Lewis smashed Hider for 27 runs including four sixes.Bangladesh came back strongly through offspinner Mahmudullah (3-18) who bowled Lewis, leaving West Indies at 122-3 and sparking the collapse with Shakib (3-37) and Rahman (3-33) causing problems for West Indies.(With AP inputs)last_img read more

The result means Leeds edge a point ahead of Middlesbrough at the top of the Championship table while Wednesday remain unbeaten at home in the league this season.Wednesday’s team showed two changes with Fernando Forestieri and Jordan Thorniley replacing Marco Matias and Daniel Pudil. The Leeds head coach, Marcelo Bielsa, named an unchanged starting line-up. Forestieri had an early appeal for a penalty turned down after going down under a challenge from Pontus Jansson.Barry Douglas had the visitors’ first chance of note, his stooping header forcing the keeper Cameron Dawson to push the ball wide. Wednesday’s Michael Hector put a long-range effort wide.At the other end Jack Harrison also missed the target with a low shot from the edge of the area.Dawson was called into action to turn Klich’s shot from the edge of the area over the bar. Liberals set to table bill to remodel national security measures

first_imgOTTAWA – Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale plans to introduce a bill today to upgrade a list of Conservative anti-terrorism measures. It will include more robust oversight of the Canada Border Services Agency along with changes to ensure existing security watchdogs can exchange information and collaborate more easily on reviews. The extensive package of legislation will also follow through on Liberal campaign promises to repeal some elements of omnibus security legislation brought in by the Conservatives after a gunman stormed Parliament Hill in 2014.The Trudeau government has committed to ensuring all CSIS warrants respect the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, to preserving legitimate protest and advocacy, and to defining terrorist propaganda more clearly. It has also pledged that appeals by Canadians on the no-fly list will be subject to mandatory review. The Liberals say the goal is to strike a balance between keeping Canadians safe while respecting their rights and freedoms. This bill, and another tabled Monday dealing with Access to Information, come as MPs prepare to dash off to their ridings for the summer, which means the legislation is unlikely to face serious debate until the fall.last_img read more

BC Hydro to negotiate power purchase agreements with Saulteau and West Moberly

first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — BC Hydro says that it plans to pursue electricity purchase agreement negotiations with two First Nations in the Peace Region. The West Moberly and Saulteau First Nations are partners with Natural Forces in the Sukunka Wind and Zonnebeke Wind projects near Chetwynd. Each of the wind projects is comprised of four wind turbines that are located east of Highway 29 near the former Natural Springs Golf Resort roughly 15 kilometres south of Chetwynd.BC Hydro said that it plans to pursue power purchase agreement negotiations with three other First Nations power projects in B.C. The five projects were selected because they are part of Impact Benefit Agreements with BC Hydro and have significant First Nations involvement. The Standing Offer program is a non-competitive, streamlined process with set pricing for small, clean energy generation projects. Hydro says that the Micro Standing Offer program requires the project have significant First Nations ownership and active participation. “Moving forward with the development of these energy projects is a step in the right direction in creating opportunities for First Nations in the province, while also contributing to B.C.’s clean energy future,” said Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Minister Michelle Mungall.“Through the Standing Offer and Micro Standing Offer programs, we’ve seen the development of small-scale renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and biomass throughout the province. These projects contributed over 300 gigawatt hours of clean energy to BC Hydro’s system in 2016,”said BC Hydro CEO Chris O’Riley. “The five latest projects demonstrate our commitment to creating opportunities for Indigenous groups in B.C.”last_img read more

Words of Wisdom from 3 Women in Communications

WomensLuncheonPanel_774.png In an ideal world, we would not be here, in 2019, still talking about the lack of gender diversity in technology and the challenges that women enterprise IT professionals regularly face working in a male-dominated field. But gender disparity is still very much an IT reality. See All in Women in Communications » 1. Take a Chance on YourselfJeanne Spinosa, telecommunications manager at Brown University, shared that a defining moment for her was in the beginning of her career, almost 40 years ago. “The cliff notes version is I was a grad school dropout. I had no income, and no future in sight,” Jeanne said. Then at a softball game, she ran into an old college friend working at Rolm and teaching people how to use their computerized telephones. “And I said, what the heck does that mean? And she told me, and I thought, well that’s kind of cool.” Gauri Bhalerao, senior manager of collaboration, networking strategy and engineering at Yum! Brands, pointed out the difference between mentoring and sponsoring. Sponsorship, she said, goes beyond the type of advising that comes with mentorship to propelling a person forward — as a sponsor you’d say, “OK, this is a person that will be great for this job, and I’m ready to vouch that [she or he] will be great,” Gauri said. In her experience, every time Gauri has received a promotion was due to sponsorship. But on a positive note, we’ve seen a tremendous amount of attention brought to the issue over the last couple of years. The need for gender equality is much discussed these days, which means there are more opportunities to enact change and drive progress. Shining a Light on Women in Communications Michelle Burbick March 11, 2019 Three Enterprise Connect keynoters speak out on their experiences being women executives in a male-dominated field. Be the “Woman in the Restroom”It’s great to have women supporting other women, but as an attendee pointed out in a question to the panel, women aren’t always supportive of other women, and too often we hear stories about women working against one another. Panelists attributed competitiveness as the likely culprit — as Erin said, “It exists. It’s a fact.” With that, she added, “we shouldn’t either shy away from it or overreact to it. It’s just part of getting through a corporate experience.” “I didn’t know anything. I figured I could learn it, and I wasn’t afraid to say I don’t know. … Never be afraid to say I don’t know and take a chance on yourself, Jeanne said. And don’t stop there! “Take a chance on someone else as well.” (For Jeanne’s full story, read the No Jitter post, “From Brown Back to Brown: A Telecom Career Unfolds.”) Two years later, Jeanne was hired on the spot for that same job when her friend took a promotion. “She said, you’re smart, you’ll learn this, you’re hired.” And that’s how she began her career in communications. She shared an experience where she was asked to move out of software development and lead infrastructure at Yum! Brands. “I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me? I had never done this before,’” Gauri said. Her sponsored assured her that she had the technical prowess for the role, and that she’d be great at it because she brought something unique to the table. “So sponsorship is the key for me more than mentorship, because that’s what really takes you to the next level,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to ask for sponsors.” 2. Ask for, and Give, AssistanceWhen it comes to taking a chance on others, being a mentor to younger women is important to all three panelists. Erin Leary, end user services agile transformation leader at Boeing, said mentoring is the best part of her day. “I love being able to talk to people about what makes them excited about work, how they see their future going, and how to empower them to take the right steps,” she said. These conversations, especially with younger women, often come down to discussing roadblocks and how to get around them, Erin said. Log in or register to post comments As part of this effort, we asked three women in enterprise IT to share their experiences and career advice with attendees at our first-annual Women in Communications luncheon. I took away countless pieces of advice from the panel, and here I’ll share the top six that resonated with me (click here to listen in on the full panel discussion, and watch this video to learn more about our women’s initiatives at EC19). Women in the workforce need to raise each other up. You might say that’s her personal mission, in fact. “Supporting women is a huge part of what I want to be able to leave as a legacy, and to look back and say, in that zone, I did more good than harm.” In providing advice on how to combat or mitigate stereotypes of women in the workforce, Erin used the “women in the bathroom” meme – “It’s like, women in the bathroom will help you with anything, right?” So, she continued, “You need to be the women in the restroom, not the ones out on the dance floor.” Gauri agreed, saying, “A lot of times, I think women are harder on women — and that shouldn’t be the case.” Women in Tech: Seeing Is Believing Michelle Burbick March 01, 2019 New initiatives at Enterprise Connect put a spotlight on women working in communications and collaboration technology. At the recent Enterprise Connect Orlando 2019 event, we made this one of our missions, taking on initiatives to help engage people in this discussion and promote the advancement of women in IT and throughout the industry. read more

Investors need to understand the fees they pay their financial adviser experts

by Craig Wong, The Canadian Press Posted May 12, 2015 1:26 pm MDT Last Updated May 12, 2015 at 4:20 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Investors need to understand the fees they pay their financial adviser: experts OTTAWA – Investors may be more focused on the gains they’ve made in recent years than the fees they pay their financial adviser, but experts say they shouldn’t be neglected.David Larrabee, a director at the CFA Institute, said the stock market has had a good run since bottoming out during the financial crisis.“When your portfolio is growing at 15, 20 per cent a year, one to two per cent in advisory fees may seem like a small price to pay,” Larrabee said.“But if instead your portfolio is only growing by four per cent, which could be our future, then all of a sudden those fees look pretty big.”Financial advisers generally fall into two broad groups: fee-based, which charge a set fee or sometimes percentage of the assets under management, and commission-based.Fee-based advisers have gained in popularity in recent years with new low-cost online alternatives, while commission-based advisers have been criticized for their potential conflict of interest.Larrabee said the choice depends on what you need from your planner and the services they offer.“In both cases you can find good advice at a reasonable price, but also the flip side is in both cases you can be paying too much for that advice,” Larrabee said.He said the fee structure is as important as the adviser putting their client’s interests ahead of their own.“This is a higher standard of care than an adviser who simply commits to a standard of suitability,” he said. The disclosure rules for investment advisers are changing.By the middle of next year, new requirements for annual performance reports and fee disclosure will take effect.Starting July 15, 2016, advisers will be required to provide an annual report on charges and other compensation that shows, in dollars, what an adviser was paid for their services.Cary List, president and chief executive of the Financial Planning Standards Council, said the key for investors is transparency on the part of the adviser about what they charge and whether they are fee-based or work on commission.“Is the individual going to be able to demonstrate to you that they are going to put your interest ahead of their own and any other interest?” List said.“Are they going to be able to demonstrate to you that they are going to mitigate any potential conflict of interest they have, not only from their compensation structure, but any other conflicts that may arise?” read more

Vogue embroiled in another race row after giving white model afrostyle hair

She said at the time: “These images appropriate a culture that is not my own and I am truly sorry for participating in a shoot that was not culturally sensitive.” “We apologise if it came across differently than intended, and we certainly did not mean to offend anyone by it.”The photographs of Jenner were taken by  fashion photographer Mikael Jansson to celebrate the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund. Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Sign up to our free twice-daily  Front Page newsletter and new  audio briefings. Vogue Magazine has become embroiled in another race row after being accused of giving a non-black model ‘afro-style’ hair. The magazine apologised, explaining that the stylist had tried to give model Kendall Jenner an early 20th century hairstyle, and that it was not intended to look like an afro.”The image is meant to be an update of the romantic Edwardian/Gibson Girl hair which suits the period feel of the Brock Collection, and also the big hair of the ’60s and the early ’70s, that puffed-out, teased-out look of those eras,” the magazine told E! News .Vogue has been criticised for its depiction of race in recent years; earlier this year, the Italian branch of the magazine apologised after being accused of darkening supermodel Gigi Hadid’s skin.Last year, supermodel Karlie Kloss apologised  after posing for a spread in a kimono, which caused a “cultural appropriation” row. She was widely criticised on social media. One angered Instagram user wrote: “We used to have our hair burned because society taught us that we were not beautiful with our afros, now they copy our afros but can’t use actual BLACK models with afros!”Another said: “For years we have been penalized about our looks and especially our hair, It is a slap in the face when non-Blacks try to imitate our look.”However, others came to the magazine’s defence, with one user commenting: “People need to calm down. This isn’t an Afro. It’s a teased hairstyle. Her hair is teased. It is not an Afro. She’s not making fun of a culture nor is she being disrespectful.”Another said: “Enough already. This isn’t even close to a afro! If you are offended by this you really need to adjust your thinking, maybe with a little more compassion and a lot more love and leave the hate out of it!” read more

Meanwhile, AAA-PBP’s support is up two points to 6%.Last week, a poll published in the Sunday Independent showed that Fine Gael’s support had dipped by four points since October.According to this latest poll, Fianna Fáil is now down one point to 26%, while Fine Gael is still at 24%. Fianna Fáil remains the party with the greatest support in the country.Labour is down one point, to 4%, the Independent Alliance stays at 3%, the Soc Dems are down one point to 3%, and the Green Party (4%) and Renua (1%) also have seen no change.Fine Gael has been at the centre of weeks of speculation about the future of its leader and Taoiseach Enda Kenny recently – resulting in a crunch meeting last Wednesday. After facing pressure to go in the wake of his handling of the Garda whistleblower revelations, Kenny told parliamentary party members that he will deal with the issue of his leadership after he returns from his St Patrick’s Day visit to the USA.The meeting led to a sense of relative calm after weeks of speculation. But that doesn’t mean that everything’s A-OK in Leinster House.Earlier today, Fianna Fáil’s Robert Troy told Claire Byrne on RTÉ Radio 1 that “there is a sense of dis-functionality, instability and incoherence at the very heart of government”. iPhone 8 might be made from zirconia ceramic

first_imgThe iPhone 7 body is made from aluminum, as are many other high-end smartphones. What’s Apple’s next step, though? The new high-end variant of the Apple Watch might offer some clues. The Apple Watch Edition Series 2 isn’t made of gold like the last one, it’s zirconia ceramic. This watch “only” costs $1,250, about a tenth of the last Apple Watch Edition, but this fancy material might become the default for Apple in future iPhones. When the iPhone 8 comes out in about two years (there’s always a revamped S generation in between the big redesigns), it might drop the aluminum for zirconia ceramic for several reasons. Watch nerds can certainly tell you about one of them — durability. Stainless steel and aluminum are strong materials, but they’re also what material scientists call “ductile.” That means they can deform when struck. That’s why aluminum devices can scratch, dent, and even bend (remember Bendgate?).Ceramics have the potential to be considerably more durable and resistant to scratching, if they’re formulated right. Zirconia ceramic in particular possesses extremely high mechanical strength, toughness, and fracture resistance. For this reason, Apple has submitted a number of patents on ceramic case designs. For smartphones (and smartwatches), zirconia ceramic could be even more useful. Ceramics are extremely efficient at dissipating heat with the right treatment. The Apple Watch has alumina mixed with the zirconia powder, allowing it to far surpass the heat dissipation of aluminum alone. The most relevant benefit in the iPhone would be that zirconia ceramic is transparent to radio frequencies. There are antenna lines on the back of the iPhone allowing the signal to escape from the aluminum case. That wouldn’t be necessary with a ceramic phone.Right now, the zirconia ceramic Apple Watch is the uber-expensive model. With two more years of design and manufacturing refinements, Apple might be able to lower the cost of zirconia ceramic to a similar point as current aluminum processes. It may even be more efficient on a large scale than aluminum. Of course, a few years ago we were all but sure Apple would use sapphire glass in its iPhone screens, and look how that turned out. Anything can happen.last_img read more

14 believe every employer provides deathinservice benefits

first_imgMore than one in 10 (14%) respondents believe that every employer provides death-in-service benefits, according to research by Aviva. Its Protecting our families report, which surveyed 2,500 UK adults, also found that 18% of respondents do not know what support they would get from their employer if the main income earner within the family was unable to work for at least six months due to ill health. The research also found:52% of respondents know that death-in-service benefits cease once an employee stops working for the employer that provides them.27% of respondents think that death-in-service payments are subject to tax.26% of respondents believe death-in-service benefits only apply if they die at work or in a work-related situation.50% of respondents cite their employer as their most trusted source of financial support should their family face income loss for at least six months due to ill health, and 42% of respondents cite their partner’s employer as their most trusted source of financial support.10% of respondents believe they would receive sick pay indefinitely if the main income earner within the family was unable to work for at least six months due to ill health.Paul Brencher (pictured), managing director, individual protection at Aviva UK said: “Many parents say they would depend on government or employer support if they became too ill to work, but do not know what this would actually entail.“Affordability is also frequently cited as a barrier to having protection in place, but our research suggests families do have space to reduce their monthly spending. There is a clear challenge for the industry to ensure cover comes at a reasonable price. However, families must also ask themselves whether they can really afford not to be protected against the unexpected.”last_img read more

Hackers begone Measurementdeviceindependent QKD increases clock rate and transmission distance while reducing

first_img Recently, however, scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China devised a de novo MDIQKD protocol and have developed a 75 MHz clock rate, fully automatic and highly stable system and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors with detection efficiencies of more than 40%. By so doing, they have extended MDIQKD secure transmission distance to 200 km, and achieving a secure key rate three orders of magnitude higher – and an failure probability six orders of magnitude lower – than those of previous MDIQKD attempts. The researchers state that their results pave the way towards a quantum network with measurement-device-independent security, and in fact have already demonstrate the feasibility of MDIQKD in an unstable environment by performing a field test in which their system was inserted into an installed fiber network.Prof. Qiang Zhang discussed the three key accomplishments detailed in the paper that he, co-group lead Prof. Jian-Wei Pan, Researcher Yan-Lin Tang, and their co-authors published in Physical Review Letters. “Each of our main accomplishments – increasing system clock rate to 75 MHz and improving system stability, extending secure transmission distance to 200 km, and lowering failure probability by six orders of magnitude to 2 × 10−9 – had its unique challenges,” Zhang tells Phys.org. “In terms of performance, this is the first time we’ve increased clock rate to 75 MHz, as well as improving system stability and using high efficiency – over 40% – superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors to develop a fully automatic system, in an MDIQKD approach.” Zhang points out that while a gigahertz clock rate in conventional QKD is easily achieved, this is not the case with MDIQKD. Specifically, unlike conventional QKD, MDIQKD relies on interference between two independent lasers – and increasing the clock rate to 75 MHz caused poor two-laser interference visibility. “The main challenge lies in high-speed laser modulation, including not only severe overshoot, ringing and chirp inside the laser pulse, but also a more subtle problem lying in the temperature fluctuation caused by random triggering signals to the internally-modulated laser source,” Zhang explains. “These effects are observed for the first time simply because interference of two independent high clock-rate lasers could not be discovered in a low-speed system.” Regarding detector efficiency (DE), Zhang notes that superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have been demonstrated as a key tool for improving the QKD performance – but the challenge is to improve nanowire absorption. The scientists have addressed this issue by integrating an optical cavity structure in the detectors: SNSPDs are cooled down to 2.2 K by using a Gifford-McMahon cryocooler to guarantee high detector performance as well as 7´24 hour operation†. “Again,” he stresses, “this is the first time high detector efficiency superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors have been applied in an MDIQKD system.”Extending the MDIQKD secure transmission distance to 200 km and achieving a secure key rate three orders of magnitude higher than previous results in recent MDIQKD experiments challenged the researchers in several aspects. “First was the signal-to-noise ratio,” Zhang notes. “Because of the long distance, the signal arriving at the receiver’s side will be very weak. “Secondly, system stability in a 200 km case is difficult since the fiber fluctuation is much severe, and a large attenuation will make it even harder with weak feedback signals. Thirdly, we required a better and stricter post-processing method to handle the greater distance results in a slower raw data rate and a stronger fluctuation.”Finally, to guarantee the safe usage of the secure key in practice, the failure probability must be controlled beneath the order of 10-9 – and the 2 × 10−9 failure probability they achieved is six orders of magnitude lower than previous results. The main reason that previous demonstrations used a higher failure probability of 10−3, Zhang tells Phys.org, is that performing fluctuation analysis with a lower failure probability requires more data to be accumulated. However, this requirement could not be satisfied by the actual experimental systems operated at a slow system clock rate and without full automatic feedback system – especially in the 200 km case when signal attenuation is very large – so the arriving signal is weak.Addressing these challenges was, in itself, a challenge. “For the current experiment,” Zhang continues, “the first challenge was to increase the system clock rate to 75MHz with good laser modulation. To ensure a good waveform, we modulated the laser pulse with an amplitude modulator cutting off the tail, thereby eliminating the influence of the chirp, overshoot and ringing. To ensure robust two-laser interference, we modulated vacuum intensity – instead of not providing the triggering signal – to avoid the effect of temperature fluctuation.” For a long distance QKD experiment, a single-photon detector with high detection efficiency and low dark count rate (the average rate of registered counts without any incident light) is decisive. “A conventional semiconducting APD (avalanched photodiode) cannot fulfill this requirement because of its high dark count rate and low detection efficiency, which is why a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector – specifically, a cryocooler-based SNSPD technology providing over 40% detection efficiency at the dark count rate of 10 Hz – is the sole choice for 200 km MDIQKD.” (In QKD protocols, an ideal single photon source rarely exists, and so is replaced by a weak coherent state laser source or other alternative. This causes a serious security problem that is minimized by using a weak laser source – but the latter results in low QKD speed. Decoy state QKD uses several different photon intensities rather than a single intensity to resolve the multi-photon issue. Moreover, the scientists optimized the decoy state MDIQKD protocol, including the decoy state scheme, intensity and probability distribution.”Secondly,” Zhang continues, “we adopted the high efficiency, low dark count superconducting nanowire single-photon detector to achieve the 200 km distance. Last but not least, to make the entire system stable for a long period of time, we developed several feedback systems to precisely calibrate the parameters of the system, such as a wavelength calibration system employing an optical spectrum analyzer with 1 pm precision.” This is critical because extended system stability enables continuous running for as long as an entire week. The much lower failure probability of 10-9 requires not only an experimental setting capable of accumulating enough raw data, but also a more appropriate post-processing method to extract the secure key. “With this work, for the first time in the entire OKD community we adopt the Chernoff bound (which gives exponentially decreasing bounds on tail distributions of sums of independent random variables) with a failure probability of 10-9 to allow statistical fluctuation analyses six orders of magnitude lower than previously achieved,” Zhang explains. “Furthermore, with the high loss that occurs in long-distance QKD, the Chernoff bound – believed to be a future standard post-processing method – provides better, stricter parameter estimation in the statistical fluctuation analysis.”Interestingly, in their paper the scientists point MDIQKD security is inspired by the time-reversed EPR-based QKD protocol. “This can be explained by a virtual qubit idea,” Zhang says. “A sender first prepares an entangled state of the combined system of her virtual qubit and the qubit to be sent to the receiver. The sender then measures the virtual qubit, thereby preparing a BB84 state.” BB84 is a provably secure quantum key distribution scheme – in fact, the first quantum cryptography protocol – developed by Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard in 1984 (hence its name) relying on the quantum property that information gain is only possible at the expense of disturbing the signal if the two states we are trying to distinguish are not orthogonal. “After making a Bell state measurement (BSM) and obtaining a successful outcome, the receiver announces the results to the sender and the third party in the quantum system, resulting in their virtual qubits becoming entangled. (Bell states are maximally entangled quantum states of two qubits; the Bell state measurement is a joint quantum-mechanical measurement of two qubits that determines which of the four Bell states the two qubits are in.) “In this sense, the protocol is directly equivalent to an entanglement based protocol, only with the time direction reversed.”In addition, the new MDIQKD protocol does not rely on any assumption on measurement. “In the virtual qubit idea, we can see that a sender prepares the BB84 state by measuring a virtual qubit. Since the sender could have delayed the measurement on this virtual qubit until after the receiver performs a Bell state measurement and announces its results, the receiver’s BSM cannot affect the BB84 state preparation process, and so the receiver cannot obtain any information about the BB84 state. In other words, security does not rely on any assumption on measurement.”Another result described in the paper is that the novel MDIQKD system’s techniques constitute a critical ingredient for a quantum repeater and long-distance quantum communication. “Performing a Bell-state measurement is an intrinsic element in these situations,” Zhang points out, because it requires good interference of two independent laser sources. Again, in our work we for the first time have shown the feasibility of this kind of interference, especially at a distance 200 km. Besides the laser modulation techniques, the feedback systems developed for this purpose – for example, time calibration and wavelength calibration – are also of great importance to realizing a long-distance quantum repeater.”The researchers point out that their results have a range of implications for future quantum communication systems, one clearly being it paving the way towards a quantum network with measurement-device-independent security. “Our MDIQKD system includes two clients and one server. With the help of a system-wide feedback system, all users are time-synchronized and all independent laser sources have the same wavelength. All these techniques are definitely a solid foundation of building an MDIQKD network. In addition, to add more clients into the network, all that is needed is placing an active optical switch in the server’s site – and with off-the-shelf optical switches, this MDIQKD network can be built in the near future.”The novel MDIQKD protocol has a star-type structure in which the detection system placed in the Bell-state measurement site as a server, allowing it to be shared by all transmitters – a structure very suitable to a QKD network with a star-type structure, since all the end-node clients can share the entire measurement system of the center-node server. This means that, importantly, only laser sources and modulators are required when more clients are added to the network. Zhang notes that these devices are much smaller and cheaper than the complex, expensive detectors – a factor preferred for creating an economical network. The scientists have also performed a field test in which their system has been inserted into an installed fiber network to demonstrate the feasibility of MDIQKD in an unstable environment. “Previously, an MDIQKD field test was performed over an 18.6 km deployed fiber by Wolfgang Tittel’s group at the University of Calgary1,” Zhang tells Phys.org. “However, a random modulated decoy state was not added in that experiment, so a secure key was not actually generated. Moreover, all other laboratory demonstrations are performed without perturbation of the field environment.” Based on the technology developed in their experiment, the researchers have achieved a 16.9 bps secure key rate over a 30 km fiber network of total length‡.Zhang and his co-authors envision a number of future real-world applications that would be made feasible by using a single fiber to transmit both signal laser pulses and synchronization laser pulses, as well as by minimizing noise generated from Raman spontaneous scattering. “To make MDIQKD more attractive for potential users, our goal is to have only one single fiber required for each link. This would decrease the resources required by real-world applications, such as voice calls and file transfers, and would be especially useful in some particular situations.” For example, a user having insufficient fiber link resources could multiplex a single fiber link to do classical synchronization and single-photon transmission – or in the occasional situation when a user performs QKD tasks, it would be preferable to have one fiber link rather than two in order to conserve normally unused resources.Zhang adds that a significant concern when adopting one single fiber is strong spontaneous Raman scattering of the synchronization light, which introduces additional noise to the signal and thus increases error rates. (Spontaneous Raman scattering is the inelastic scattering of photons – in which the kinetic energy of an incident particle is not conserved, but lost or increased – in random time intervals.) “Typically, the power of the synchronization light is at least five orders of magnitude higher than the signal light – so spontaneous Raman scattering could be disastrous. We therefore have to be careful when multiplexing these two kinds of light, because otherwise the resulting high noise and error rates would male all real world applications impossible.”Moving forward, Zhang says that the scientists plan to build a polarization-encoding MDIQKD system, which let them remove the phase stabilization that is currently required, as well as other possible innovations. “In our experiment, wavelength calibration is based on an optical spectrum analyzer. However, in addition to this simple and direct approach, we plan to develop an alternative way without an optical spectrum analyzer – but only with the evaluation of two independent laser sources. This can be realized by observing Hong-Ou-Mandel dip.” (The Hong–Ou–Mandel effect is a two-photon interference effect in quantum optics that occurs when two identical single-photon waves enter a 50:50 beam splitter, one in each input port. When both photons are identical they will extinguish each other – but if they become more distinguishable the probability of detection will increase, allowing the interferometer to accurately measure bandwidth, path lengths and timing.) Moreover, Zhang adds, the researchers plan to build a three-layer architecture to generate, manage and use the secure key, respectively, which will lead to a more complete and practical QKD network.”Since the Bell state measurement is so common in quantum information,” Zhang concludes, “our Bell state measurement techniques can be utilized in other quantum information tasks.” “These tasks include the quantum repeater mentioned above, quantum fingerprinting and quantum teleportation.” (Phys.org)—In the ongoing effort to make communications secure, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) theoretically provides a solution – but to the delight of increasingly sophisticated hackers, falls short in real-world systems due to implementation deviating from mathematical models. A number of QKD variants – including Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (DIQKD) and the more recently introduced Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDIQKD) – attempt to close the gap between theory and practice with varying degrees of success. These two variants differ in several ways, the most important being that DIQKD requires but unlike MDIQKD cannot easily achieve very high detection efficiency and low channel loss to yield secure keys, while MDIQKD, unlike DIQKD, does not rely on any ideal devices and can close the most vulnerable QKD security hole by removing all side-channels from the measurement unit. Nevertheless, previous MDIQKD systems have had limitations as well, such as limited distance and a low key rate of less than 0.1 bit/s. Qantas announces profit update

first_imgQantas chief executive Alan Joyce has announced that the carrier expects to report an Underlying Profit Before Tax for the last financial year ending June 2011 in the range of AUD500 million to 550 million. Mr Joyce said a number of factors have impacted the FY11 result, including the disruptions due to the Chilean volcano which has already cost the airline AUD21 million. A series of significant weather events and natural disasters including the Queensland floods, Cyclones Yasi and Carlos, the Japanese tsunami and the Christchurch earthquake has cost the carrier in total AUD185 million. He also confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Rolls Royce regarding the Airbus A380 engine failure on flight QF32 last November and the full settlement will be recognised in the FY11. “Considering the challenges facing the aviation industry, this is a good result, the Qantas Group’s best since the global financial crisis,” Mr Joyce said. He said the combination of their domestic carrier’s Jetstar and Qantas, Jetstar International, Qantas frequent flyer and Qantas freight has enabled them to pull through these major events. Qantas International is forecast to generate a loss before interest and tax of around AUD200 million, on invested capital of over AUD5 billion, with a weaker result expected for 2012.“Clearly the situation is not sustainable, however we are developing a long term strategy aimed at restoring competitiveness and profitability.” Source = e-Travel Blackboard: S.P Qantas faces more turbulant times aheadlast_img read more
