first_img November 25, 2016 By: Governor Tom Wolf Nearly 1 million small businesses and 2.4 million workers currently call Pennsylvania home, and owe their prosperity to welcoming communities, flourishing main streets, state support and assistance, robust higher-education programs, and a large dose of Pennsylvania pride. In fact, we often hear from owners that running a small business in Pennsylvania is the key to working smart and living happy— traits that stand out among our neighboring states.A nationwide initiative, Small Business Saturday encourages citizens to support local businesses and celebrate the critical contributions of entrepreneurs and small business owners.Small business owners can testify to the many personal benefits of entrepreneurship— the ability to pursue a passion, the opportunity to work alongside family, and the means to operate with creative freedom and flexibility are just a few.Small businesses are essential to Pennsylvania’s economic diversity — they commercialize innovative technologies, employ nearly half (46.9 percent) of our private-sector workforce, and account for more than 98 percent of all employers in the Keystone State.The upcoming holiday season offers an excellent opportunity to support the commonwealth’s hardworking business owners. I encourage you to shop local, eat local, and play local — on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 26 — and beyond. If you’re not sure where to start, the Pennsylvania Tourism Office can help.Pennsylvania is full of incredible small towns and main streets that offer something for everyone, no matter your passion — or your gift list. Visit the world’s oldest bookstore, Moravian Book Shop, on Main Street in Bethlehem. Travel to Byers Choice, Ltd. in Chalfont for your Christmas gifts and ornaments. Choose a bed and breakfast like the Inn at Jim Thorpe instead of a chain hotel for a more hometown experience.
