How she bridged gap between Delhi Ggn

first_imgGurugram: On the wet Sunday afternoon when the former and longest-serving Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was cremated, it was not only residents of Delhi who were left teary-eyed but also the Gurgaon residents. It was not only Delhi that has expressed gratefulness to Sheila but also Gurgaon which is now Gurugram.Realising that Gurgaon was a developing city where a large number of Delhiites were going for job opportunities, it was under her leadership that the number of DTC buses were increased and that still continue to transport a large number of residents. Enbridge lowballing pipeline cost leaked shadow CIA emails

first_img(Video above of APTN story on leaked Stratfor emails discussing Canada and the U.S.)Check out previous APTN National News partnership with WikiLeaksBy Jorge BarreraAPTN National NewsEnbridge is likely lowballing the Northern Gateway pipeline’s projected $5.5 billion price tag which could triple in cost by the time it’s completed and see the Chinese end up financing most of it, according to internal emails written by senior analysts with a private international intelligence firm known as the “shadow CIA.”The internal emails, from Texas-based intelligence firm Stratfor, were obtained by whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks. APTN National News gained access to the emails through an investigative partnership organized by WikiLeaks.WikiLeaks began publishing the first of the nearly 5 million emails on Feb. 27. The emails range from 2004 to December 2011.Stratfor has a global client list that includes major corporations and U.S. agencies, along with the RCMP and Canadian government departments like Foreign Affairs and Natural Resources Canada. The emails show Stratfor officials have been monitoring the opposition to the tar sands and the proposed Enbridge pipeline to ship Alberta bitumen to the British Columbia coast. Stratfor analysts, however, questioned Enbridge’s stated price-tag for its controversial Northern Gateway Pipeline which seemed low for a project that would cross the Canadian Rockies.Peter Zeihan, Stratfor’s vice-president of analysis, said he expected the price tag triple and that Chinese state-owned Sinopec, which is part of the project, would likely pick up most of the bill.“While technically possible, going over the Canadian Rockies would be a technical challenge to say the least. I’m guess that the price tag on this would easily go above $15b (sic),” writes Zeihan, in the Jan. 21, 2011 email. “There’s a very good reason why all the crude goes south on flat land to the Midwest. So not impossible, but China would have to pony up for all of that itself.”The comments emerged during a discussion on a news story on China’s decision to help finance the pipeline project, which is heavily opposed by many First Nations communities and environmental groups. An Enbridge spokesman, however, said the company stands by its projected cost for the project.“It is a figure we use that we expect is going to be the cost to construct the pipeline,” said Todd Nogier, spokesperson for Enbridge. “Our funding partners, participants and Enbridge have financial arrangements. Whatever cost escalations that might occur, that is not something we are dealing with at the moment.”The Stratfor emails also reveal that one of the intelligence firm’s analysts used his younger brother, a Canadian trade official currently in Japan, as a source on the Enbridge pipeline.Mark Schroeder, Stratfor’s Africa analyst, contacted his brother, Alan Schroeder, who, according to his LinkedIn account, is a trade official with the Canadian embassy in Tokyo, to get information.Mark Schroeder asked Alan Schroeder what he knew about the Enbridge pipeline and the port in Prince Rupert, B.C., which Stratfor analysts speculated could be the end point for the Enbridge pipeline.“We had a little talk this morning at work about the infrastructure plans for Prince Rupert,” wrote Schroeder, on Jan. 21, 2011. “Have you heard any more talk on plans for expanding infrastructure there? Some folks are real interested (stuff like what port changes they have in mind in addition to new pipelines that are possible).”Alan Schroeder, using a Gmail account, responded by saying he didn’t know too much about the Enbridge pipeline because it was a new project, but speculated it could be ready by 2016.“Enbridge is the entity that is working on it. There is quite a bit of interest and Sinopec has committed $100 million to the project. There is still a lot of preparatory work that needs to get done, and perhaps that’s why I’m not very familiar with the project…If everything runs smoothly it could be operational by the end of 2016,” he wrote.Mark Schroeder then copied and pasted his brother’s answer into an email to Strafor’s analysts and identified him as a “Stratfor Canadian source,” code number CA012, with a reliability rate of “four.”Nogier said Enbridge has looked at Prince Rupert as potential end point for the project, but the company concluded that Kitimat, B.C., was the safest option for the pipeline’s end point.jbarrera@aptn.calast_img read more

Bangladesh opposition head under virtual house arrest

first_imgDhaka- Bangladesh’s opposition accused authorities of placing their leader under virtual house arrest Thursday as tens of thousands of troops were deployed across the country ahead of elections next month.Amid growing violence in the build-up to the January 5 general election, the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said police were barring anyone from visiting their leader Khaleda Zia at her home in Dhaka. The move comes after Zia, a two-time former premier and arch rival of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, called for supporters to stage a mass march on the capital this Sunday aimed at scuppering the polls. The BNP is one of 21 opposition parties which are boycotting the elections over Hasina’s refusal to stand aside and allow a neutral caretaker government to organise the contest. The country’s largest Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami, has also been banned from taking part.“Since yesterday she has been under virtual house arrest,” BNP vice-president Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury told AFP.“Police are not allowing anyone, including party leaders and activists, to meet her. It is part of a government move to foil the December 29 march for democracy.”Deputy commissioner of Dhaka police Lutful Kabir confirmed that extra officers had been deployed outside Zia’s home in the upmarket Gulshan neighbourhood but said the move was designed to “enhance her security”.Police confirmed two senior BNP members, including a current lawmaker, were detained outside Zia’s home on Wednesday night but denied the arrests were made because they wanted to meet her. With Hasina and her Awami League party determined the election goes ahead, troops are being sent to nearly every corner of the country at the end of what has been an unprecedented year for political violence.A total of 269 people have been killed since January, either in protests at the elections or by Islamists who have seen several of their leaders sentenced to death from crimes dating back to the 1971 independence war.The authorities are expecting Sunday’s rally to further inflame tensions with Zia having made clear its purpose is to force a last-minute cancellation of the polls.“This march is to say ‘no’ to these farcical elections and to say ‘yes’ to democracy,” she said in a speech on Tuesday.Troop deploymentsThe troop deployments are expected to infuriate the BNP which has accused the government of trying to set the army up against normal civilians.Election Commission spokesman S.M. Asaduzzaman said that troops would be deployed in at least 59 of the country’s 64 districts.“They’ll be used as a striking force if there is any violence and they will patrol important areas, streets and highways,” he told AFP.While a small number of soldiers had begun taking up positions earlier this week, military spokesman Muhammad Reza-ul Karim said the mass deployment began Thursday and will continue until January 9.“The troops have been deployed at the request of the Election Commission… in an effort to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections,” Karim said in a statement. The soldiers would initially be deployed to the main towns and cities in the districts before then moving into more rural areas. He did not say how many troops were being deployed but local media put the number at around 50,000.The boycotts have highlighted the growing political polarisation in the country of 153 million. While Bangladesh has had a deeply troubled history since independence, with nearly two dozen coups, this year has been the bloodiest since it broke free from its former rulers in Islamabad 42 years ago.A constable was burned to death in a petrol bomb attack on a police vehicle Tuesday night while two more people succumbed to their burn injuries Wednesday.Much of the violence has been blamed on supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami, one of whose leaders was hanged earlier this month for war crimes.Three rounds of UN-brokered talks between the government and opposition have failed to resolve the dispute between the Awami League and the BNP whose leaders despise each other. The United States, European Union and the Commonwealth countries have announced they will not send observers to the election, seriously denting its credibility.Strikes and blockades have crippled the economy, affecting millions of poor farmers and the urban middle class in what is the world’s eighth most populous country and one of the poorest in Asia. The strikes have done further damage to an economy already reeling from the impact on the crucial garment sector from a factory collapse in April which sparked widespread industrial unrest.last_img read more

UN environment chief says green plan central to African development

Klaus Töepfer, the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), hailed the gathering, officially called the Partners’ Conference on the Implementation of the Action Plan for the Environment Initiative of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). “Today’s meeting shows that [the international community] remains determined to help Africans place their countries on a path of development and prosperity,” he said.He stressed that the NEPAD environment plan would “help African countries address the continent’s environmental challenges, while encouraging sustainable development in one of the poorest regions in the world.”This effort, he added, will also contribute to the success of the Millennium Development Goals, a set of time-specific, measurable targets – including the halving of extreme poverty by 2015 and stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS – agreed to by the world’s countries in 2000. read more

USDA to buy wild blueberries amid price drop

USDA to buy wild blueberries amid price drop PORTLAND, Maine – The U.S. Department of Agriculture will buy up to 30 million pounds of wild blueberries to help stabilize prices and supply in one of Maine’s signatures industries. The members of Maine’s congressional delegation told The Associated Press on Thursday that the agency will pay up to $13 million for the wild blueberries. The bailout could help spell the end of low prices to consumers on wild blueberries, which are harvested commercially in Maine and Canada. They differ from the fatter cultivated blueberries in that they are smaller, have a more intense taste and are richer in antioxidants. Maine is by far the biggest wild blueberry producing state in the country, and it also produces about a quarter of North America’s total blueberries, according to the University of Illinois’s website. The USDA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The purchase comes after the state’s legislative delegation asked for it in a letter to the federal agency in which they said prices of frozen wild blueberries have fallen by as much as half in the last five years. The legislators asked the agency to buy the berries for its domestic food-assistance programs.Frozen wild blueberries slid from 90 cents per pound in 2011 to 60 cents per pound in 2014 and continue to drop, the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine has said. The commission has also said two back-to-back years of big crops have created a backlog of wild blueberries.Nancy McBrady, executive director of the blueberry commission, said the low value of the Canadian dollar also has hurt Maine’s growers. She said Canadian growers, which are centred in the Maritime Provinces, are at a “tremendous competitive advantage” when selling in the U.S. and internationally because of the stronger U.S. dollar.“And the competition from cultivated blueberries is omnipresent,” she said. “The prices of wild blueberries have dropped, so our farmers are earning less for our blueberries.”In Maine, wild blueberries are mostly harvested in the blueberry barrens of the state’s rural Downeast region. The state has some 44,000 acres of wild blueberries and it relies on the berries for about $250 million per year in economic value, officials have said.Rep. Chellie Pingree said the purchase will help the blueberry industry as well as food assistance programs in need of a healthy fruit product.“It makes a lot of sense for the federal government to make this purchase to help ease the surplus of frozen blueberries and at the same time supply food assistance programs with a very healthy, high quality food,” she said. by Patrick Whittle, The Associated Press Posted Apr 14, 2016 1:09 pm MDT Last Updated Apr 14, 2016 at 2:00 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email read more

Opinion Why the US womens soccer team could and should win the

June 30, 2015 – Montreal, Canada – Players of the United States celebrate scoring during the semifinal between Germany and the United States at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The United States beat Germany 2-0 and moves on to the Final. Credit: Courtesy of TNS.Long gone are the days of Brandi Chastain ripping off her jersey to show the whole world what a woman’s sports bra really looks like during the ever-so-exciting 1999 Women’s World Cup final. As 11 players took the field on July 10, 1999 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., thousands of young girls, and boys, wore their favorite number nine jersey, representing none other than soccer legend Mia Hamm. Fans from across the country packed 90,000 strong into the large stadium to cheer on the USWNT as they faced off against China. Hamm and Chastain would both score in penalty kicks, with Chastain’s sealing the deal, and doing so would go down in soccer and sporting history and earn them the name “The 99ers.”While the 99ers are the last American team to have won the World Cup, that doesn’t mean they were a better team. In the mid to late 1990s, women’s soccer wasn’t an up-and-coming American pastime. However, in 1999, Americans — most for the first time — gathered to watch the U.S. team in the World Cup final. The biggest and most-watched moment came right as Chastain’s final penalty kick reached the back of the net, and dozens of cameras focused on her as she ripped off her jersey and exposed her black sports bra. What was known as the greatest female soccer match to date has silently faded into the past.Today the names Hamm and Chastain might not even register to the newer or younger fans and the once most popular number nine jersey features a new name on the back, along with nearly all the other numbers (excluding captain Christie Rampone, who is the only remaining 99er on the team).Today U.S. women’s soccer has a new face; or shall I say faces. If one were to attend a USWNT soccer match today, they would see a sea of the numbers: 20, 13 and 1. All-time international goal scoring forward Abby Wambach wears the powerful number 20 jersey. Superstar and young-faced Alex Morgan wears number 13. Fierce and controversial Hope Solo wears the top goalkeeper number 1 jersey. Although the vast majority of fans choose these three numbers, the beauty about this modern team is that every number on the field is echoed on the backs of dozens, if not hundreds, of fans in the stands. You see, this team isn’t just built on one or two stars. This team has the power of 23 behind it. 23 players make up this 2015 World Cup team and 23 players will go down in history if they can complete the job.All 11 players on the field and the 12 sitting on the bench are known by nearly every spectator, and every player has her own fan base cheering them on. One doesn’t just get fans because of her looks or social media posts, although it certainly does help. These women can really play the game of soccer. This 2015 team doesn’t have 11 starters, it has have 23 of them. While some players certainly get more time on the pitch than others, the success of this team has come from the ability of any individual player to be switched in and out and for the team to still succeed, and succeeded it has. This team has come a long way in just a few short weeks. After being placed in the tough Group D, otherwise known as the “group of death,” the U.S. team pulled in seven points after two wins and a draw to secure the top spot in its group and a high-placed seed in the elimination rounds. And after giving up only one goal in the first group round game against Australia, Solo and the outstanding U.S. defense has had a total of five straight shutout matches. Their latest came from Tuesday night’s matchup against top-ranked Germany, when the U.S. scored two goals in the second half to secure a spot in its fourth Women’s World Cup final.Hope Solo, goalkeeper of the United States, reacts during the World Cup Group D match against Sweden at Winnipeg Stadium in Winnipeg, Canada, on Friday, June 12, 2015. Credit: Courtesy of TNS.A common phrase said about this team is that “you don’t want to play the U.S. team after a loss,” and this team is still playing after a devastating loss.In 2011, the last World Cup, the U.S. team lost to Japan in the finals during penalty kicks. Irony? I think not. The devastating loss still echos in each game since then, and the players are not quick to forget it. Although they won the 2012 Olympics, the last four years have brought nothing but hardships for this team, despite a winning record. The departure of two coaches, injuries of key players and the neverending controversial struggle with Solo off the field.Despite all of that, though, this team is the stronger team. It has three of the top forwards with Wambach, Morgan and Sydney Leroux. It has veteran captain Rampone who already knows what it takes to win a World Cup. It has the best defense in the tournament led by newcomer and rising star defender Julie Johnston, who has played every minute of the six tournament games. It has power and speed in the midfield with Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd and Lauren Holliday. Not to mention it has Hope — Solo that is — who is widely regarded as the best female goalkeeper in the world to ever play.Could history repeat itself if Japan advances against England Wednesday night, or can the U.S. learn from its mistakes and make history as the only women’s team to wear three stars over its team crest representing three World Cup championships? While the 15ers may not be the new nickname, this team deserves to go down in history, despite a gold or not. It’s been 16 years since the American team has stood on top the podium with the golden trophy above their heads. Sixteen years without the title of “World Champions.”“World” or not, this team is about as champion as they get, and this team has given America something to cheer about again in women’s sports. read more

But after being seen at the Bristol Royal Infirmary she was sent home in the early hours of the morning – only to be readmitted 24 hours later when she got worse. The teenager died in the intensive care unit on May 20, 2016, after an MRI scan showed irrecoverable brain swelling had caused brain stem death. Her mother, Claire Booty, told the inquest the family had raised concerns about meningitis with a call operator, paramedics and doctors. She said: “Given the symptoms were flu-like, I was given no guidance about what to look out for if her condition deteriorated. Izzy wasn’t given a chance.” Her mother told the inquest: “When I got home about 6pm she was complaining of a headache and took paracetamol about 7pm.”Her symptoms became worse, and during the evening my husband rang and we discussed it.”I rang 111 to seek further advice. In particular my husband and I discussed meningitis and the letter.”She looked for a rash on the teenage girl’s body, but told the inquest that the two male paramedics who attended were reluctant to examine her.Paramedics Gary White and Christian Chambers, of South West Ambulance Service, took the teenager to hospital in an ambulance.Mrs Booty said that the pair appeared “understandably reluctant” to examine Izzy as she was a teenage girl.Mrs Booty said: “They seemed fixated about an upset stomach, but this wasn’t one of the symptoms she was complaining of and this wasn’t one of the symptoms we had raised when we called 111.” Izzy's last tweet Izzy’s last tweetCredit:Twitter After being admitted at 1am, Isabel was seen by a doctor who sent her home after five hours – although she could hardly walk to her mother’s car.Mrs Booty told the inquest: “I was concerned that the examination was not particularly thorough and that the doctor was distracted.”The school letter we had seemed to make no difference to the risk assessment which was undertaken.”Nurses reassured the pair that “it was just a virus” and she would recover in a couple of days, the inquest was told.Isabel struggled to walk to the car and said: “I can’t believe they’re sending me home Mum, I feel so ill.” They seemed fixated about an upset stomach, but this wasn’t one of the symptoms she was complaining of and this wasn’t one of the symptoms we had raised when we called 111Izzy’s mother Izzy fell ill while studying for her exams, the inquest in Flax Bourton, Bristol, was told. Tributes quickly flooded in for the popular teenager with dozens describing her as a “gorgeous” and “bubbly” young woman who had an “amazing energy”.The inquest in to her death is scheduled to last for five days and presided over by senior coroner, Maria Voisin. The following day Mrs Booty phoned her GP surgery at 5.10pm but was told it was too late for a home visit that day.Due to Izzy’s worsening condition Mrs Booty called for an ambulance at 5.30pm.Ambulance staff arrived, by which time the teenager was unable to communicate and her limbs were “thrashing and flailing”.Within half an hour of arriving at A&E, Mrs Booty was told it was likely her daughter had meningitis, and she was taken to the intensive care unit. But the following day her condition worsened and an MRI scan showed irreparable brain swelling had occurred and brain stem death had taken place. Her death was recorded at 7.30pm on May 20, two days after Isabel had posted on Twitter: “Lol I knew something was up. Did not expect I’d be rushed to hospital in an ambulance, how peak.”Paramedic Pippa Bishop told the inquest she had been unable to pre-alert the hospital as she had to restrain Isabel on the stretcher.Senior coroner for Avon, Maria Voisin, said: “Would it have been preferable to pre-alert before leaving the scene?”Ms Bishop said: “With hindsight it would have been.”The inquest heard that the cause of death was “most likely meningococcal meningitis”.University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said in a rapid review after Izzy’s death that the assessment and treatment were “appropriate” as initial symptoms were “not typical of meningitis”.Izzy’s mother told the inquest she had told paramedics, nurses and the doctor that a fellow pupil alt St Brendan’s Sixth Form College had recently been diagnosed with meningitis and that the school had issued a warning letter to parents.last_img read more

Your crash course in Why a crackdown on black money has left

first_img Share7 Tweet Email “The Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes hoarded by anti-national and anti-social elements will become just worthless pieces of paper.”Ordinary citizensHowever, it is not just India’s criminals that like to deal in cash. The country has a largely cash economy with an overwhelming majority of transactions being completed through physical tender.Law-abiding citizens were bound to get caught in the crossfire, but Modi reckoned they wouldn’t mind.“Experience tells us that ordinary citizens are always ready to make sacrifices and face difficulties for the benefit of the nation,” he said. “I have full confidence that every citizen will stand up and participate.” 15 Comments Your crash course in… Why a crackdown on ‘black money’ has left Indians queuing for cash A ban on 500 and 1,000 rupee notes has rocked the economy – but it might only be a short-term sting. 20,777 Views Sunday 4 Dec 2016, 9:00 PM https://jrnl.ie/3115959 Take me to Fora By Fora Staff Get Fora’s NEW daily digest of the morning’s key business news: Image: Altaf Qadri/AP/Press Association Images Dec 4th 2016, 9:00 PM Short URL Bank queues in India Source: Altaf Qadri/AP/Press Association ImagesPeople have been given until 30 December to exchange invalid notes for the new ones or to deposit leftover cash into their bank accounts. However, there is a daily Rs2,000 (€27.50) cap on ATM withdrawals, while only Rs4,000 (€55) can be exchanged at banks. There is a Rs250,000 (€3,550) limit on the amount of money that can be lodged to an account.Farmers with crop loans and families with upcoming weddings – which are big in India – were given larger withdrawal limits of Rs25,000 (€345) and Rs250,000 per week respectively.‘Day of rage’ Unsurprisingly, demonetisation has put an enormous strain on the country’s banking system.News outlets published images of huge queues of people anxious to exchange their worthless cash for new currency and there was chaos across the country with some banks running out of the new notes. There were also reports of people becoming ill from exhaustion after standing in line for hours.India’s opposition parties accused the government of mismanaging the situation and invited frustrated citizens to protest in a “day of rage”. Source: Bikas Das/AP/Press Association ImagesThousands took to the streets across various cities this week, but the BBC questioned whether there was a genuine groundswell of opposition to Modi’s ban.The broadcaster’s Asian correspondents said despite the inconvenience – particularly for poorer citizens – the majority of Indian people are in favour of the rupee cull.‘Black money’As well as dismantling criminal activity, the ban promised to rid India of ‘black money’ stashed away by otherwise law-abiding citizens.‘Black money’ is code for tax evasion, naturally a big problem in such a cash-centred economy.According to official government figures, only 1% of Indians paid income tax in 2013 – in a nation of 1.3 billion people. The majority of revenue is currently collected indirectly through sales and VAT.As well as the cap on how much cash can be withdrawn and exchanged at banks, the government warned that deposits above Rs250,000 will be investigated by tax authorities. If a citizen is found to have evaded tax, they will be charged the full bill on top of a fine worth up to 200% of the tax owed.Earlier this week, the finance minister relaxed this rule as part of a new scheme, according to a Reuters report. In a bid to encourage tax dodgers to come clean, they can now pay half their tax bill and put another quarter of it into a trust account for four years. India’s finance minister Arun Jaitley Source: Mark Schiefelbein/AP/Press Association ImagesHow has it worked so far?Unsurprisingly, Indian businesses have been badly hurt by the rupee ban.Pundits have warned that the country – which recently overtook China as the world’s fastest-growing major economy – will see a major slowdown in its boom because of it.CNN reported that the ban will take at least 1% off India’s current 7.1% GDP growth rate. One commentator told the American news outlet he wouldn’t be surprised if it lost 3% by the end of the current financial year. That said, Modi was elected with a mandate to eliminate widespread tax evasion, and a wider tax base would allow for more spending in public services which would stimulate the economy. Some economists have questioned the decision to introduce the Rs2,000 note – arguing that the larger denomination note would surely make it easier for illegal transactions. After a long silence, the Reserve Bank of India’s chairman Urijit Patel said the new currency “has been designed to make it hard to counterfeit” because they are smaller and thicker. The downside of the new shape, however, is that it doesn’t fit ATMs. The machines have to be reconfigured to cater for the new notes which has added to the backlog. It wouldn’t be surprising if the 30 December deadline was extended as a result.Time will tell whether Modi’s gamble was worth it. But if the policy manages to fatten up the country’s tax-to-GDP ratio, a measure of tax raised against economic output, from 17% to the OECD average of 34%, the short-term sting could propel India’s economic boom even further.Written by Conor McMahon and posted on Fora.ie Image: Altaf Qadri/AP/Press Association Images INDIA’S PREMIER DROPPED a bombshell a few weeks ago when he announced an overnight ban on 500 and 1,000 rupee notes. In an address to the nation, prime minister Narendra Modi said culling the country’s largest denomination notes – which are worth the equivalent of about €7 and €14 respectively – would “strengthen the hands of the common man in the fight against corruption”.The invalid currency will be swapped for new Rs500 and Rs2,000 notes with a limit on how many old notes can be deposited and exchanged.Criminals with wads of ill-gotten and counterfeit cash are the target of the ban, but regular citizens have also felt the pain – which is actually part of the government’s plan. With that in mind, let’s look at why India has dumped the bulk of its cash in a bid to clamp down on corruption – and ‘black money’.CorruptionWhen Modi announced that Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes were invalid from 8 November, he said the bulk of India’s cash was tainted by criminal activity.“The magnitude of cash in circulation is directly linked to the level of corruption,” he said.“Inflation becomes worse through the deployment of cash earned in corrupt ways. The poor have to bear the brunt of this. It has a direct effect on the purchasing power of the poor and the middle class.” Indian prime minister Narendra Modi Source: Hau Dinh/AP/Press Association ImagesThe old notes are easy to counterfeit, he said, and widely used to buy weapons by criminal groups. They were also “stashed under the beds of government officers”, he said, and used by land buyers to bribe housing officials.A ban on the commonly used notes would have a major impact on illegal activity, Modi promised. Samsung Promises Fix to Nintendo Switch Smart TV Issue

first_img The latest video game hardware craze isn’t called the Nintendo Switch for nothing. The device’s entire gimmick is about switching between playing it on the go as a tablet and playing it at home as a console docked to your TV. And performing that switching is very seamless and cool. What isn’t so seamless and cool is an issue Switch owners have been experiencing when plugging the machine into their new Samsung Smart TVs. One of the features that make these recent televisions so smart is their ability to change HDMI inputs on their own. So in theory, if you have multiple devices plugged in, the TV will automatically and conveniently switch to that device when you turn it on.The only problem is, even when it sleep mode, it appears a docked Switch still sends a signal to a Samsung TV, causing it to unexpectedly switch even when there’s nothing on the screen. Delhi court charges Kuldeep Sengar with rape under POCSO in Unnao case

first_imgDelhi’s Tis Hazari court on Friday, August 9, charged the expelled Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, Kuldeep Sengar, with the rape of a minor girl in Unnao. The court has passed the order on charges under relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.District Judge Dharmesh Sharma also framed charges against Sengar’s accomplice Shashi Singh for kidnapping the victim. There are five related cases against Sengar and others in the Unnao rape-accident case. The Supreme Court on August 1 had transferred all the cases linked to the Unnao rape survivor to Delhi from Lucknow. The development came days after the victim, who had accused Kuldeep Sengar of raping her in 2017, was severely injured after a car in which she was travelling in with her relatives and lawyer Mahendra Singh collided with a truck. The four-time legislator was expelled from BJP a day after the incident. He was suspended from the party in 2018 when the charges against him first attracted nationwide attention.THE UNNAO RAPE CASEThe Unnao case made headlines when the victim and her mother attempted self-immolation outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s house, seeking justice, on April 8, 2018.Sengar’s brother has been accused of beating up the victim’s father after tying him to a tree. Texas Has Nearly 60 Billion In Tax Breaks – Some Wont Survive

first_img To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Jennifer Rabb of Rice University’s Baker Institute’s notes many of the breaks are designed to ease the burden on lower-income Texans. “Sales tax exempts food, medicine, doctor visits, residential electricity, and all of those things add up to about $7.5 billion for the current fiscal year,” Rabb said. “So that’s a big exemption, but I think it’s one that most people would prefer to remain in the law.”Other tax breaks are written to avoid double taxation. Cars and trucks, for example, are exempt from sales taxes because they’re subject to a separate motor vehicle tax. A number of corporate tax breaks are designed to prevent “pyramiding” – taxing components or energy used in manufacturing, then taxing the finished goods as well.Difficult isn’t impossible, though. Both Ramsey and Rabb said some breaks are likely to be on the chopping block.View Fullscreen 00:00 /00:50 Listencenter_img X Stuart Seeger/FlickrTexas State Capitol, Austin TXMajor tasks facing the next Legislature include passing a budget, reforming the state’s broken school finance system, and limiting property tax increases. One solution lawmakers will consider to achieve all three is ending tax breaks. The state comptroller’s office issued a report listing $59.8 billion in current tax breaks, but ending enough of those to make a difference will be tougher than it sounds.“If I say I’m not going to raise taxes but I take away an exemption that someone has been enjoying in order to extract some more money from them, that’s going to feel like a tax increase to them,” said Ross Ramsey, executive editor of The Texas Tribune.  Sharelast_img read more

Baltimore City Mayoral Race Gets Crowded

He is also the president of the Fells Point Main Street business association. He told the Baltimore Business Journal that he’s most interested in property taxes, crime, schools and government accountability. Mack Clifton (mackcliftonformayor.com)Mack CliftonClifton is a New Jersey native who moved to Baltimore in 2005. He says he is a minister and author and counts Queen Elizabeth II, actor Benedict Cumberbatch among his distant relatives.“We should not live in fear of whether or not we can care for our families, whether or not our children will be harassed by uncouth police officers, whether or not we will be victims of violent crime,” he writes on his website. He has not held any elected office, but currently is a member of the 231st Transportation Battalion, a veteran’s organization. Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (rawlingsblake.com)Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-BlakeThe mayor has been taking a beating in the court of public opinion since the April unrest that followed Freddie Gray’s death. Residents are worried about the city’s climbing murder rate. As of Sept. 9 there had been a total of 229 homicides in Baltimore this year. In 2014 there were a total of 211.Some accused the mayor of telling police to stand down as city stores were looted during the unrest. She also took heat for the curfew that was put in place as police and lawmakers tried to calm the city. However, Rawlings-Blake is not without her successes. She is the secretary of the Democratic National Committee and also the president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors – she is the first African American, the first woman and the first Baltimore mayor to hold this position. She is expected to open her campaign headquarters in Remington later this month. Maryland State Senator Catherine PughWhen Maryland State Senator Catherine Pugh and Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stokes entered the mayoral race on September 8, they entered an already crowded field. The two made their announcements in The Baltimore Sun.This is 65-year-old Pugh’s second run at the mayor’s office. In 2011, she lost to Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in the Democratic primary. She currently represents the 40th legislative district and serves as the senate majority leader. The Pennsylvania native told The Sun that as mayor, she would unify all of Baltimore’s diverse parts.Baltimore City Councilman Carl StokesThis is also 65-year-old Stokes’ second time running for mayor. In 1999, he lost to Martin O’Malley. He has already set up his campaign website at carlstokes2016.com.“The problems we face – too few jobs, too much crime, high taxes, and far too many under performing schools – are old problems that we have been dealing with in old ways without success,” Stokes said in a message posted to his campaign website on Sept. 7.Stokes represents the twelfth district. He serves as chair of the city council’s Taxation, Finance and Economic Development committee. He is also the vice-chair of the Education and Executive Appointments committees. Both lawmakers were highly visible during the April unrest that followed the death of Baltimore man Freddie Gray in police custody. Stokes made headlines when he appeared on CNN and argued that calling protesters thugs is similar to calling them “niggers.”We don’t have to call them by names such as that,” Stokes told CNN. We don’t have to do that.”Cameras caught Pugh as she squared off against Fox News reporter Geraldo Rivera. “We need police to respect our neighborhood,” she told Rivera as the two stood in the middle of a large crowd of protestors. “We need police to respect our neighborhoods. Black lives matter.”Some of the other candidates in the mayoral race include: Sheila Dixon (sheiladixonformayor.com)Former Mayor Sheila DixonDixon was the first candidate to announce she was running against Rawlings-Blake. She is set to hold an ice cream social-themed campaign event at the B&O Railroad Museum on September 13.On her campaign site, she boasts about the gun offender registry, the single stream recycling program, and the popular Downtown Circulator as accomplishments of her time as mayor. There is no mention of the scandal over the alleged misappropriation of gift cards that lead to her resignation in 2010.Before announcing her candidacy, Dixon did an interview with The AFRO where she said that a lot of the city’s most deep-rooted problems have not gotten the attention they deserve.“Dealing with systemic issues, for elected officials, is not something they focus on because it’s long-term,” Dixon said. Richard Black (voteblackformayor.com)Accountant Richard Black announced his candidacy on August 24. On his campaign site, he promises to bring to the office “a strong desire to diagnose issues and provide cost-effective and practical solutions.”He says he would like to lower the Mayor’s salary to the average salary in Baltimore. 9 Data Science Myths Debunked

first_imgThe benefits of data science are evident for all to see. Not only does it equip you with the tools and techniques to make better business decisions, the predictive power of analytics also allows you to determine future outcomes – something that can prove to be crucial to businesses. Despite all these advantages, data science is a touchy topic for many businesses. It’s worth looking at some glaring stats that show why businesses are reluctant to adopt data science: Poor data across businesses and organizations – in both private and government costs the U.S economy close to $3 Trillion per year. Only 29% enterprises are able to properly leverage the power of Big Data and derive useful business value from it. These stats show a general lack of awareness or knowledge when it comes to data science. It could be due to some preconceived notions, or simply lack of knowledge and its application that seems to be a huge hurdle to these companies. In this article, we attempt to take down some of these notions and give a much clearer picture of what data science really is. Here are 5 of the most common myths or misconceptions in data science, and why are absolutely wrong: Data Science is just a fad, it won’t last long This is probably the most common misconception. Many tend to forget that although ‘data science’ is a recently coined term, this field of study is a cumulation of decades of research and innovation in statistical methodologies and tools. It has been in use since the 1960s or even before – just that the scale at which it was being used then was small. Back in the day, there were no ‘data scientists’, but just statisticians and economists who used the now unknown terms such as ‘data fishing’ or ‘data dredging’. Even the terms ‘ data analysis’ and ‘data mining’ only went mainstream in the 1990s, but they were in use way before that period. Data Science’s rise to fame has coincided with the exponential rise in the amount of data being generated every minute. The need to understand this information and make positive use of it led to an increase in the demand for data science. Now with Big Data and Internet of Things going wild, the rate of data generation and the subsequent need for its analysis will only increase. So if you think data science is a fad that will go away soon, think again. Data Science and Business Intelligence are the same Those who are unfamiliar with what data science and Business Intelligence actually entail often get confused, and think they’re one and the same. No, they’re not. Business Intelligence is an umbrella term for the tools and techniques that give answers to the operational and contextual aspects of your business or organization. Data science, on the other hand has more to do with collecting information in order to build patterns and insights. Learning about your customers or your audience is Business Intelligence. Understanding why something happened, or whether it will happen again, is data science. If you want to gauge how changing a certain process will affect your business, data science – not Business Intelligence – is what will help you. Data Science is only meant for large organizations with large resources Many businesses and entrepreneurs are wrongly of the opinion that data science is – or works best – only for large organizations. It is a wrongly perceived notion that you need sophisticated infrastructure to process and get the most value out of your data. In reality, all you need is a bunch of smart people who know how to get the best value of the available data. When it comes to taking a data-driven approach, there’s no need to invest a fortune in setting up an analytics infrastructure for an organization of any scale. There are many open source tools out there which can be easily leveraged to process large-scale data with efficiency and accuracy. All you need is a good understanding of the tools. It is difficult to integrate data science systems with the organizational workflow With the advancement of tech, one critical challenge that has now become very easy to overcome is to collaborate with different software systems at once. With the rise of general-purpose programming languages, it is now possible to build a variety of software systems using a single programming language. Take Python for example. You can use it to analyze your data, perform machine learning or develop neural networks to work on more complex data models. All this while, you can link your web API designed in Python to communicate with these data science systems. There are provisions being made now to also integrate codes written in different programming languages while ensuring smooth interoperability and no loss of latency. So if you’re wondering how to incorporate your analytics workflow in your organizational workflow, don’t worry too much. Data Scientists will be replaced by Artificial Intelligence soon Although there has been an increased adoption of automation in data science, the notion that the work of a data scientist will be taken over by an AI algorithm soon is rather interesting. Currently, there is an acute shortage of data scientists, as this McKinsey Global Report suggests. Could this change in the future? Will automation completely replace human efforts when it comes to data science? Surely machines are a lot better than humans at finding patterns; AI best the best go player, remember. This is what the common perception seems to be, but it is not true. However sophisticated the algorithms become in automating data science tasks, we will always need a capable data scientist to oversee them and fine-tune their performance. Not just that, businesses will always need professionals with strong analytical and problem solving skills with relevant domain knowledge. They will always need someone to communicate the insights coming out of the analysis to non-technical stakeholders. Machines don’t ask questions of data. Machines don’t convince people. Machines don’t understand the ‘why’. Machines don’t have intuition. At least, not yet. Data scientists are here to stay, and their demand is not expected to go down anytime soon. You need a Ph.D. in statistics to be a data scientist No, you don’t. Data science involves crunching numbers to get interesting insights, and it often involves the use of statistics to better understand the results. When it comes to performing some advanced tasks such as machine learning and deep learning, sure, an advanced knowledge of statistics helps. But that does not imply that people who do not have a degree in maths or statistics cannot become expert data scientists. Today, organizations are facing a severe shortage of data professionals capable of leveraging the data to get useful business insights. This has led to the rise of citizen data scientists – meaning professionals who are not experts in data science, but can use the data science tools and techniques to create efficient data models. These data scientists are no experts in statistics and maths, they just know the tool inside out, ask the right questions, and have the necessary knowledge of turning data into insights. Having an expertise of the data science tools is enough Many people wrongly think that learning a statistical tool such as SAS, or mastering Python and its associated data science libraries is enough to get the data scientist tag. While learning a tool or skill is always helpful (and also essential), by no means is it the only requisite to do effective data science. One needs to go beyond the tools and also master skills such as non-intuitive thinking, problem-solving, and knowing the correct practical applications of a tool to tackle any given business problem. Not just that, it requires you to have excellent communication skills to present your insights and findings related to the most complex of analysis to other stakeholders, in a way they can easily understand and interpret. So if you think that a SAS certification is enough to get you a high-paying data science job and keep it, think again. You need to have access to a lot of data to get useful insights Many small to medium-sized businesses don’t adopt a data science framework because they think it takes lots and lots of data to be able to use the analytics tools and techniques. Data when present in bulk, always helps, true, but don’t need hundreds of thousands of records to identify some pattern, or to extract relevant insights. Per IBM, data science is defined by the 4 Vs of data, meaning Volume, Velocity, Veracity and Variety. If you are able to model your existing data into one of these formats, it automatically becomes useful and valuable. Volume is important to an extent, but it’s the other three parameters that add the required quality. More data = more accuracy Many businesses collect large hordes of information and use the modern tools and frameworks available at their disposal for analyzing this data. Unfortunately, this does not always guarantee accurate results. Neither does it guarantee useful actionable insights or more value. Once the data is collected, the preliminary analysis on what needs to be done with the data is required. Then, we use the tools and frameworks at our disposal to extract the relevant insights and built an appropriate data model. These models need to be fine-tuned as per the processes for which they will be used. Then, eventually, we get the desired degree of accuracy from the model. Data in itself is quite useless. It’s how we work on it – more precisely, how effectively we work on it – that makes all the difference. So there you have it! Data science is one of the most popular skills to have in your resume today, but it is important to first clear all the confusions and misconceptions that you may have about it. Lack of information or misinformation can do more harm than good, when it comes to leveraging the power of data science within a business – especially considering it could prove to be a differentiating factor for its success and failure. Do you agree with our list? Do you think there are any other commonly observed myths around data science that we may have missed? Let us know. Costa Rica faces strong competition as destination for US retirees

first_imgCosta Rica and Mexico have traditionally been the region’s preferred destinations for U.S. and Canadian retirees, but according to a report from the The Wall Street Journal, Panama, Belize and Nicaragua are increasingly competing with both countries. The report says that the number of U.S. citizens who receive pension payments in Panama increased by 65 percent from 2006-2011. In Nicaragua, the number doubled during the same period, from 595 retirees to 1,322.“These three countries offer packages of residency and breaks on taxes and fees that imitate Costa Rica’s pensionado program, which was introduced in 1971 and helped set the groundwork for a boom in retiree emigration from North America. Nicaragua added such a law in 2009, offering foreigners with retirement incomes tax breaks on everything from cars to construction materials,” the WSJ noted. The story also describes how last year Panama created a path to citizenship for retirement residents and introduced a new residency program for people under retirement age that has lowered requirements for investment in property, business and other ventures.Officials from Costa Rica’s National Tourism Chamber acknowledged the efforts of these three nations to attract retirees, but insisted that Costa Rica isn’t necessarily losing ground. The WSJ report also noted that crime and security problems are still a major concern for people interested in relocating to the region.“Security isn’t always adequate in the region. Mexico’s well-publicized drug war and escalating violence are starting to push Americans to look at new places for retirement, […] and Costa Rica’s petty crime such as theft and smash and grab muggings have increased in the past couple of years, along with home invasions,” added the story, also citing similar problems in all the other countries. Businesses wary of hiring amid continued political uncertainty says survey

first_imgThe high cost of electricity and fluctuating exchange rate ranked among the greatest concerns for Costa Rican businesses during the fourth quarter of 2013, according to the Union of Private-Sector Chambers and Associations’ (UCCAEP) latest Business Pulse survey released Wednesday.A majority of the 502 businesses surveyed said they do not plan to hire new employees in the first quarter of 2014.UCCAEP’s president, Jaime Molina, used the survey’s findings as an opportunity to call for a “clear” policy from presidential candidates on expanding private-sector generation of electricity as a remedy for the country’s high cost of power.“These results are more proof of the urgency to reduce electricity rates in Costa Rica. As a nation we are less attractive to international businesses that would prefer to go elsewhere because of the high cost of production in our country. If the country wants to grow, like the candidates say they want it to grow, Costa Rica is going to need more electricity,” Molina added.Forty-five percent of businesses surveyed said the cost of electricity had a “high” or “very high” affect on their prices. Molina estimated that the cost of electricity in Costa Rica could be more than 20 percent higher than in other Central American countries.Molina said that ruling party candidate Johnny Araya had a “clearer” plan for reducing the cost of electricity than opposition candidate Luis Guillermo Solís. The business chamber leader lauded Araya’s support for increasing the amount of privately generated electricity in Costa Rica.Molina said Solís and his team had yet to convince UCCAEP that they had firm plans for how they would lower the cost of electricity in Costa Rica.Molina noted that political uncertainty leading up to the Feb. 2 presidential election also weakened private business owners’ levels of confidence in the economy. Business confidence looking forward to the coming first quarter of 2014 dropped 4 percent from the same quarter in 2012.The survey’s organizers suggested that the continued political uncertainty has kept businesses from hiring. Of those surveyed, 64 percent said they did not plan to hire new staff and 13 percent said they planned layoffs in the first quarter of 2014.The Central Bank has sold over $60 million since Monday in an attempt to stem the recent devaluation of the Costa Rican currency.Molina did not comment on the current exchange rate, ₡546.22 to the dollar, according to the Central Bank’s MONEX index Wednesday, but added that sudden drastic changes in the exchange rate were not good for the economy. “When we see changes like this, uncertainty grows, and that doesn’t help us,” he said.UCCAEP surveyed 502 business owners and managers between Jan. 14 and 28. The survey has a 95 percent level of confidence and a 5.6 percent margin of error. Editing by Andrew Heavens) This story has not been edited by Firstpost staff and is generated by auto-feed A new technique is set to strengthen 3D printed stainless steel parts such as this previously printed rocket engine component Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory 3D printing doubles the strength of stainless steel By Robert F ServiceOct 30 2017 12:00 PM 3D printing has taken the world by storm but it currently works best with plastic and porous steel—materials too weak for hard-core applications Now researchers have come up with a way to 3D print tough and flexible stainless steel an advance that could lead to faster and cheaper ways to make everything from rocket engines to parts for nuclear reactors and oil rigs Stainless steel was first invented nearly 150 years ago and it remains widely popular today It’s made by melting conventional steel—itself a combination of iron and carbon (and sometimes other metals like nickel)—and adding in chromium and molybdenum which prevent rust and corrosion A complex series of cooling reheating and rolling steps gives the material a microscopic structure with tightly packed alloy grains and thin boundaries between the grains that create a cell-like structure When the metal is bent or stressed planes of atoms in the grains slide past one another sometimes causing crystalline defects to connect with each other—producing fractures But strong boundaries can halt these defects making the material tough yet still flexible enough to be formed into a desired shape 3D printing researchers have long tried to reproduce this structure Their setup starts with a powdery layer of metal alloy particles laid on a flat surface A computer-controlled high-powered laser beam then advances back and forth across the surface Particles hit by the laser melt and fuse together The surface then drops down a step another layer of powder is added and the laser heating process repeats binding the newly melted material to the layer below By repeating this tier-by-tier addition engineers can build complex shapes such as rocket engines The problem has been that on a microscopic level printed stainless steels are usually highly porous making them weak and prone to fracture “The performance has been awful” says Yinmin “Morris” Wang a materials scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California Several years ago Wang and his colleagues came up with an approach for using lasers and a rapid cooling process to fuse metal alloy particles together in a dense tightly packed structure Now they’ve extended that work by designing a computer-controlled process to not only create dense stainless steel layers but to more tightly control the structure of their material from the nanoscale to micron scale That allows the printer to build in tiny cell wall–like structures on each scale that prevent fractures and other common problems Tests showed that under certain conditions the final 3D printed stainless steels were up to three times stronger than steels made by conventional techniques and yet still ductile the scientists report today in Nature Materials “What they have done is really exciting” says Rahul Panat a mechanical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania What’s more Panat says is that Wang and his colleagues used a commercially available 3D printer and laser to do the work That makes it likely that other groups will be able to quickly follow their lead to make a wide array of high-strength stainless steel parts for everything from fuel tanks in airplanes to pressure tubes in nuclear power plants And that in turn will likely only increase the growing fervor over 3D printing Kolkata:The West Bengal Crime Investigation Department is assisting in the ongoing probe into the tent collapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Midnapore on Monday a senior official of the state government said on Tuesday Midnapore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi being garlanded during ‘Krishi Kalyan Sabha’ rally in Midnapore on Monday July 16 2018 (PTI Photo/Swapan Mahapatra) (PTI7_16_2018_000099B) In all 90 people were injured in the accident and a case was registered against the organiser and the decorator who erected the makeshift tent for negligence of duty the police said? however, The consumer version. saying unrealistic staged photos like this are just as bad as Photoshopped models in magazines.

set up an authority to "compel" ministries to disclose information on their websites and reduce the burden of RTI applications India’s first chief information commissioner Wajahat Habibullah has said Representational image Courtesy: nhpgovin Hailing the Right to Information Act (RTI) as a "great success story" Habibullah added that there were still challenges in the implementation of the 12-year-old law The absence of updated information on websites by ministries both at the central and state level and the maintenance of autonomy and independence of the Central Information Commission and information commissions in states were some of the challenges the former CIC told PTI Under the RTI Act Habibullah said it is expected that every ministry and department under the Centre or state government should not only develop a website but also ensure that it contains a host of routine information The websites are there and a lot of information is there but that "information is unfortunately out of date" he said Every ministry must be "compelled" to disclose all this information which can be disclosed legally he said The government should set up an authority to supervise ministries in declaring all disclosable information on their own the 72-year-old former bureaucrat said Habibullah who was CIC for nearly five years from 2005 said "Unfortunately the law itself carries no clause for enforcement of section 4 (of the RTI Act) which talks of computerisation of all records There is no authority to actually enforce it the information commission can advise but cannot enforce it" Another challenge for the RTI he asserted was that information commissions were expected to "stand alone" and supposed to be not only autonomous in their functioning but also independent in their decision making "They take no dictates from the government Unfortunately that (independence and autonomy) has not happened" he said adding that the performance of the Central Information Commission on this front had been much better than commissions in the states Asked how the government could influence commissions Habibullah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself mentioned a way out The prime minister has said the government should treat RTI as an instrument by which it can improve itself he noted and suggested that every ministry should have a group or a team that vets the type of information that is sought It will give the government a clear indication of the areas of concern he said "The PM put his finger on it Unfortunately nothing much has happened so far (but) since the PM himself is behind it activists commissioners people working within the establishment should work together in making this a reality" he said Asked whether RTI was being misused by some people and was in certain cases putting a burden on government departments Habibullah said there was some truth in that argument "When I was the CIC I myself would dismiss any complaints of its misuse saying it was being misused because of the lack of information you are putting out If you put out all the information there is no question of misuse" he said "The fact that we (establishment) are not taking the trouble of suo motu disclosing information which is disclosable under the act and unnecessarily applying the Official Secrets Act where it is not really applicable we have made it more difficult for ourselves" he added Exactly a week after he dropped his resignation bomb from Rajya Sabha Navjot Singh Sidhu chose to come out in public to play the victim and the hero as also to narrate his side of the story the reasons for his drastic action and the road ahead He ducked response on the most obvious question that has been playing on everyone’s mind — whether
